Wondering when your teen should see a gynecologist for the first time?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends a first reproductive health visit around ages 13 to 15, and it’s often more about conversation than an exam.

At Heartland Women’s Group, we’re known for teen-friendly care that’s comfortable, respectful, and low-pressure. We take time to answer questions, talk through periods and cramps, discuss cycle concerns or birth control when appropriate, and help your teen build a trusted relationship with their provider.

Why do you get a Pap test? Because prevention saves lives.

At Heartland Women’s Group, we’re passionate about helping patients protect their cervical health through education, routine screening, and preventive care.

Cervical cancer often has no symptoms in early stages, which is why regular Pap tests (and HPV testing when appropriate) are so important. Most cervical cancers are linked to HPV, and there are real steps you can take to lower risk: staying up to date on screenings, asking about the HPV vaccine, avoiding smoking, staying active, and practicing safer s*x.

Want a deeper dive into risk factors, symptoms, and screening recommendations by age? Read: https://www.wesleymc.com/healthy-living/blog/how-to-promote-cervical-health

If you’re not sure when you’re due for screening, we’re here to help.

💙January is Birth Defects Awareness Month. 💙 Not all birth defects can be prevented, but there are a few everyday steps that can help lower risk, especially before pregnancy and in those early weeks.

A few good places to start: take 400 mcg of folic acid daily, even if you are just “not trying, not preventing,” avoid alcohol, to***co, and recreational drugs, and schedule a preconception visit so you can review medications, health conditions (like diabetes or high blood pressure), and vaccines before you’re pregnant.

Want a trustworthy deep dive? ACOG has a helpful guide here:

And if you have questions or want help getting started, Heartland Women’s Group is here for you. 💛
