Medical Society of Sedgwick County

Medical Society of Sedgwick County The Medical Society is a membership organization representing physicians in Sedgwick County.

In 1903, 25 local doctors, who considered their calling the "noblest of all professions," formed the Medical Society of Sedgwick County (MSSC). They were committed to supporting the scientific-based private practice of medicine, enhancing professional medical standards and ethics, and educating the public on various health care issues. Over 100 years later, the members of MSSC continue to share this commitment to the community's health and well-being.

MSSC and the city of Derby lost a valued member this week when David Niederee, MD, died. He was a 40-year member of MSSC and a founding partner of Derby Family MedCenters. He also was the doctor for the Derby High School football, baseball and wrestling programs. Before Tuesday’s boys basketball game, Derby High School held a moment of silence to remember Dr. Niederee, a community pillar and great person.

KU School of Medicine-Wichita received a simulator donated by Intuitive Surgical, a biotechnology company in California, that will help residents and medical students train for robotic surgery. “They partnered with us because of the robust robotic surgery community in Wichita,” said MSSC member Bret Grizzell, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery. The total value of the donation is $1 million. What a great gift! Photo by KUSM-W.
