Even in states where abortion is legal, access often depends on where you live. People in urban areas may have clinics nearby, but for those in rural communities, getting care can mean driving hundreds of miles, arranging lodging, and missing work. These barriers create a serious disparity and remind us that it’s not enough for abortion to be legal; it must be accessible to everyone, regardless of geography.

The founder and president of Wyoming’s only procedural abortion clinic, Julie Burkhart, spoke with Aspen Public Radio about why she’s focused on increasing access to abortion in underserved places.

"Abortion access advocates say the number of Iowans who seek abortions has not decreased in the year since the state’s six-week abortion ban began enforcement — but the barriers to receiving that care have risen."

Though the number of abortions performed in Iowa fell, advocates said significantly more Iowans are traveling to other states seeking care.
