May 6th is International No Diet Day – a day that represents the global movement to promote self-acceptance and reject diet culture.

We know that dieting and eating disorders are directly linked. And while not all individuals who engage in diets develop eating disorders, dieting behaviors can contribute to the development of disordered eating patterns and exacerbate existing eating disorders.

Today, we celebrate bodies of all shapes and sizes, challenge norms, and understand that health can mean something different to everyone.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by recurring episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging. These purging behaviors may manifest in various ways such as self-induced vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise.

Individuals with bulimia often have a distorted body image and experience feelings of guilt, shame, or embarrassment about their disordered thoughts and behaviors. Bulimia, not unlike other eating disorders, can have serious physical and emotional consequences if left untreated.

Are you or someone you know struggling with bulimia or symptoms that may be related to bulimia? If so, we invite you to click on the link in our bio to visit our website and learn more about support options.

We extend our best wishes to those celebrating Passover, hoping it brings joy and togetherness to you and your loved ones.

We also acknowledge that holidays involving elaborate and significant meals may pose challenges for those coping with eating disorders. This may be an ideal time to lean into your support network, which may include therapists, dietitians, doctors, friends, and family.

However you choose to recognize Passover this year, we see you and wish you well this holiday.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and a time to raise awareness and support survivors. The trauma stemming from sexual assault often negatively impacts mental health, and eating disorders aren’t an exception. Sexual assault can deeply affect a person’s sense of safety, trust, and self-worth.

Survivors of sexual assault have a significant chance of developing an eating disorder. It’s crucial that support and resources are offered for those survivors of sexual assault, especially those experiencing mental health symptoms.

Alcohol Awareness Month brings attention to the impact of alcohol abuse on individuals, families, and communities.

Alcohol addiction and eating disorders can coexist, forming a complex struggle. Individuals may turn to alcohol to cope with the negative emotions tied to their eating disorder, leading to a potential increase of alcohol consumption and eventual loss of control. Excessive alcohol consumption can exacerbate disordered eating behaviors and negatively impact the recovery journey. Treating both conditions is crucial for comprehensive and effective recovery, addressing the underlying psychological, emotional, and behavioral aspects of each disorder.

Monte Nido offers alcohol addiction treatment programs at our Rosewood programs located in Arizona. If you are struggling with alcohol along with your eating disorder, call 888-228-1253 or click here to learn more: https://ow.ly/fBlw50RjecH

Autism Acceptance Month aims to foster understanding, empathy, and inclusion for individuals with autism. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the diverse strengths and abilities of people with autism while raising awareness about the challenges they may face. By promoting acceptance and advocating for meaningful support and accommodations, Autism Acceptance Month helps create a more inclusive society where individuals with autism can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives and talents.

Studies show that up to 30% of individuals who struggle with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) also have an autism diagnosis. Understanding and addressing the intersection of ARFID and autism is crucial for developing comprehensive treatment approaches that address the unique needs of individuals with both conditions. Both ARFID and autism can be isolating and create difficult social dynamics.

We’re reminded yet again that eating disorders do not discriminate, and individualized support is critical.
