Ok another thing I see weekly. Why is it people always think when something hurts they need to put heat on it? So when you strain, pull or sprain a part of yourself what happens? Swelling, inflammation and it gets hot right? So if it is hot what do you think putting heat on it does? Well initially it makes it feel better and this is because your heating the area same temp as inflamed area. So what does this do to blood flow? Does it increase it like most people think or does it cause restriction and more inflammation? Well it’s the second. It’s like throwing a steak in heated skillet and never flipping it. Pulls all moisture out of muscle and makes it tough or in this case tighter and more inflamed. But people continue to use heat, even after it makes it worse. Take it off, it hurts more, so they put it back on and it does not hurt as much. So they keep using it or even sleep with it on all night and then next morning they can’t move body part very well or at all. In some cases this creates a neuropathy and that is really bad! So what do I tell people to use instead, well that would be ice. Wrapped in paper towels or kitchen towel. 20-30 minutes on 1-1 1/2 off then do it again. But I hear “ I don’t like cold “. Well this is what it does, it pulls heat out of inflamed area and cools it off to point body senses it’s cold and pumps blood in to warm it up and flushes it out and calms it down. I know all the old school people were raised with heating pads used for a lot of different problems , but don’t do it. I would rather you do nothing then to put heat on it. So dry heat is the worst thing to use and with some injuries you can alternate moist heat and ice but always end with ice. Now if you have gall bladder attack then heat is helpful, just not with soft tissue. If hot or warm to touch and swollen or inflamed use ice. Especially with back pain! Heated seats, heating pad or heated mattress covers are not good to turn on and leave on whole time in car or bed. Just more food for thought. Merry Christmas!

Ok several things come through my office on a regular basis. I am going to go over these important issues again. Right now I am going to talk about things every person should do after a certain age or on regular basis. Men we need to have our PSA checked yearly, need to have colonoscopy done starting at 40-45 and then as needed. Blood work and blood pressure are also very important to keep eye on. For everyone. Blood pressure gradually changes and increases without you knowing. So keep eye on it even if currently good. Women mammograms and Paps are necessary even if you’re not planning on having any more children. These tests are necessary to catch things before they get bad, the earlier you catch the easier they are to treat. I tell my guys it is not about if, it is when you get prostate cancer, as we all get it. The quicker you catch any of the above issues the easier is to treat! I can’t say this enough. Out of sight is not out of mind, just because you don’t want to know does not mean is not there! So if you have things checked on regular basis you know either way. Again just me reiterating what I get to say every week. Don’t ever think it won’t happen to you!

The human body is a marvel of biology, made up of 37 trillion cells across 200 types. The skin, our largest organ, contains 100 billion cells, while the brain houses 100 billion neurons, processing up to 60,000 thoughts daily. The retina can distinguish 10 million colors with its 127 million specialized cells.
Our circulatory system includes 30 billion red blood cells and 42 billion blood vessels, transporting 6 liters of blood—10% of body weight. Daily, we take 23,040 breaths, the heart beats 115,200 times, and over a lifetime, we produce enough saliva to fill two pools.
With 640 muscles, 360 joints, and 206 bones, the human body is a masterpiece of complexity and efficiency.

Football season is coming and other school activities along with other sports. We will be doing a lot of sitting and watching on hard bleachers with no backs. It is important to take or have stadium seat and or cushion to keep from having back or butt pain do to prolonged sitting. For me I am not a sit around person and am up moving both at work and home. So sitting long term really aggravates my low back. So knowing if you too are this way taking steps to make keep from flaring your back up will make big difference. A good stadium seat with good cushion and support or just a good cushion, I like the Purple seat cushion when hunting and really helps. Do not get anything that is real mushy as you need support along with some cushion. Little things go a long way to keep you from having back problems.

Spring is around the corner and we are getting out doing more and being more active. With yards, gardens and flower beds. Just remember that you have not been this active for awhile and pace yourself as your body is not used to working outside all day. Also remember your not 20 and either ask for help to move heavy things or for get wagon, side by side or tractor. Love seeing everyone at office but let’s let it be for maintenance! See you soon.
