Do you know someone who has dimply skin (can be anywhere on their body, but most common is the legs) that is heavy, fatigued, maybe painful, easily bruised, or difficult to move? They may have Lipedema. This is often confused with Lymphedema or Obesity and an estimated 11% of women struggle with it. It presents itself during hormonal shifts (puberty, pregnancy, menopause) and can be very debilitating. The fat actually changes to a different kind of fat and becomes very dense, pressing on nerves, lymphatic pathways, restricts muscles and can be very painful. Sadly, most doctors are not familiar enough with this auto-immune disorder to recognise or diagnose it and end up "fat shaming" or just telling their patients to go on a diet and exercise, but that doesnt seem to work the way we expect it should. (See the 4 stages below.)
Myofascial Release at MG Bodyworks can help with lipedema symptoms! By releasing the fascia that is around and in the fat, we can lift the restrictions that are pressing on these systems. The result is that the pain decreases, the body part(s) feel lighter and more energetic. The John Barnes myofascial release approach is not painful and will never injure.
If you know of someone going through this, we'd love to help get them back to being pain free and lighter on their feet.
*June Is Lipedema Awareness Month!
