Happy International Women's Day!

This day is special to me because of all the International Women in my life who have shaped me.

During the part of your life that shapes you, I was forunate enough to grow up in Europe. I was surrounded by women of all nationalities.

Who I am today represents International Women. But not only that, I've recognized in my line of work, how little I know, how little we were taught in my education, how little the world still understands Women.

We have a lot to look foralward to- together!

In my last post, I reviewed what labs dietitians can review.

But so many conditions and each individual have levels their body prefers.

Within Normal Limits (or Ranges) are merely guidelines and a starting point. Optimal labs are important to investigate with symptoms being major factors to include in the decision-making.

Some examples include:

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) - reviewed by providers, and doses adjusted based on the individual and symptoms

Hemoglobin - Women may appear in normal ranges, but a lower normal may not be best.

Vitamin B12 - too high isn't good,l and can be signs of other conditions. But those with fatigue, digestive and absorption issues may benefit from higher normal levels.

Vitamin D - we want you higher! So even if you're 'normal', low normal probably not optimal for so many conditions!

Don't just assume normal is optimal.
Ask the questions.
Be your own advocate.
And ask a dietitian!

Did you know Dietitians review specific labs for your health and wellness?

Labs can help tell the story.

Dietitians learn the importance of labs in nutrition assessment during their education (Masters degree required, internship required, board certification required, continuing education required) .

How do I use labs?

When I LISTEN to their concerns and goals, I am searching for what could be involved behind the scenes (this is not found through AI!).
Unfortunately, insurance doesn't like to pay for many nutrition-related labs...but yet we know they can be the root problem of many medical problems.

And Normal- is not OPTIMAL!! Stay tuned for more on optimal lab values vs. Normal.

As a dietitian- we look at the whole person. We aren't looking at one sole issue, we search and find from our knowledge the root causes.

Examples: (key areas amongst others)
1. Low energy, fatigue, poor focus ; iron panel, B vitamins, thyroid
2. Depressed, low energy, poor bone health; vitamin D
3. Diarrhea, poor focus, skin, nails, bloating: celiac panel (to diagnose), B vitamins, vitamin D, electrolytes
4. Diarrhea, weight loss, high blood sugars: pancreatic enzymes lipase and amylase, B vitamins, electrolytes
5. Fertility issues: iron panel, folate rbc, vitamin B12, vitamin D, lipid panel, thyroid

These are just a few of many labs reviewed by Dietitians. For your conditions, for your wellness, for prevention, all labs are monitored.
After labs are reviewed, Dietitians make their recommendations to improve and treat.

Helping out the WELL-Nurtured Development community this weekend with an area that is near and dear to my heart.
I have struggled myself with food insecurity (without knowing to be honest), and growing up, providing food, one of our basic human rights, was something that I was always very passionate about. It's time to spread the wealth for eating well on a budget and choosing nourishment over nothing.

We understand how the current state of our world is impacting our families directly with being able to feed their families properly. Our wonderful Registered Dietitian Emily R. Fasciana is holding this FREE virtual webinar this Saturday 11/8 to educate on how to help build a grocery list that is both nutritious and cost-effective! 🍎🍞πŸ₯‘
