February marks the 100th anniversary of official celebrations of Black History Month, an opportunity to reflect on the power of this annual commemoration and the enduring impact of Black Americans throughout history.

Here are a few key facts about how this important observance began:

💚 First created as a one-week observance in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson, it was expanded to Black History Month in 1976.
❤️ February was chosen to honor the birthday of Abraham Lincoln and the date Frederick Douglass chose to celebrate his birthdate.
💛 2026 marks the theme: “A Century of Black History Commemoration,” reflecting on this milestone of honoring Black history in the U.S. and around the world.
