What Is Prone Transpsoas Spine Surgery—and Who Is It For?

If you’ve been told you need spinal fusion for conditions like spinal stenosis, nerve compression, or spondylolisthesis, there’s a new, less invasive option now offered by Dr. Frank Fumich at the Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio.

Prone Transpsoas (pronounced “trans-SO-uhs”) Lateral Interbody Fusion is a minimally invasive spine surgery that avoids cutting through large back muscles. That means less pain, less blood loss, and faster recovery compared to traditional fusion techniques.

Using advanced navigation tools and smaller incisions, Dr. Fumich can realign and stabilize the spine while preserving muscle and improving long-term outcomes.

For most, medical residency is a full plate. But for Dr. Jim Patterson, it was also the beginning of a 13-year journey in the Air Force Reserves. A practicing orthopaedic surgeon since 2001, Dr. Patterson spent over a decade treating active duty service members, veterans, and their families at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base—all while raising a young family and caring for patients here at home.

We’re proud to celebrate his dedication to both his patients and his country. Thank you, Dr. Patterson!
