You bet it can! 👇

Warm water can help the perineum become more elastic & relaxed, reducing the incidence and severity of tearing.

But that’s not the only benefit…

💧Warm water is relaxing & comforting

💧Buoyancy in water lessens a mother’s body weight, allowing for freedom of movement & easy position changes

💧Immersion in water often helps lower high blood pressure caused by anxiety

💧Water reduces stress-related hormones, allowing the mother’s body to produce endorphins which serve as pain-inhibitors

💧Water provides a greater sense of privacy, thereby reducing inhibitions, anxiety, & fears

and more!

I gave birth to my 2nd and 3rd sons in water - it helped me so much.

🔆 Let’s talk about one of the first and most important things a doula will discuss with you in order to best serve you….Your Birth Plan!

🔆 A birth plan not only allows for your care providers, partner, and doula to have a clear understanding of your birthing preferences so they can assist you in the best way possible, but also allows you to see the many different birthing options you have to begin with and to ask questions in advance!

🔆 Have you made your Birth Plan yet?

🔆 Have you decided on what’s negotiable and what’s non-negotiable when it comes to how you deliver your baby?

🔆 Whether you decide to have an epidural or have no epidural, a water birth, lotus birth, or VBAC, only YOU can make the best birth plan for YOU!

🔆 As a doula, one of my main goals is to make sure you are informed on the many options you have when it comes to your birthing experience!

🔆 I am not concerned with how you decide to birth, but rather the information you are given in order to make your decisions!

🔆 Your Birth Story Matters!

🔆 Your Autonomy Matters!

🔆 Did you know that there are numerous enzymes in breast milk that not only aid digestion but also act as natural antibiotics!?

🔆 When a baby is sick, their saliva is able to send signals to the mother’s body indicating the need for a production of more milk with illness-specific antibodies.

🔆 In other words, breast milk is always changing in order to best suit the infant!

🔆 This is just one of the many ways in which babies can benefit from breastfeeding!

BENEFITS of Vernix Caseosa during pregnancy, labour and after birth: 👶

Vernix caseosa is a protective layer on your baby’s skin and appears as a white, cheese-like substance.

This coating develops on the baby’s skin while in the womb, and protects his skin. Without this protection, your baby’s skin could chap or wrinkle in the amniotic fluid.

So what are the benefits during pregnancy labour and after delivery?

PREGNANCY BENEFITS:

While in the womb, the vernix will help to prevent your baby and her skin from infection with it’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-infection properties.

LABOUR BENEFITS

Vernix’s greasy, oily texture serves as a natural lubricant to minimize friction as your baby makes his way down the birth canal.

AFTER DELIVERY BENEFITS:

Vernix’s natural moisturising properties can continue to protect your baby’s skin after birth, by helping it retain moisture and stave off bacterial infections.

……..

SHOULD YOU DELAY YOUR BABIES FIRST BATH?

Bathing immediately after birth used to be seen as the best thing for babies. But today it’s becoming increasingly common to delay that first bath.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends waiting at least six hours — and if you can go a full 24 / 48 hours, your newborn benefits.

Whatever you choose, just note it on your birth plan along with any other important decisions so the nurse doesn’t accidentally bathe your baby sooner.

You can request: That the nurse just uses a soft cloth to gently remove any traces of blood and amniotic fluid from the newborn’s skin. And let them know that you don’t want them to remove excess amounts of the vernix caseosa.

Then, over the next one to two days, gently massage the coating into your baby’s skin.

No other mammal doubts their ability to give birth.

They seek out isolation - darkness - quiet - and they let the process unfold.

It really is silly, after all, to doubt our ability to procreate when it is quite literally what keeps our species alive.

But the indoctrination is real.

From before we can remember we’re told how painful & dangerous & impossible birth is. We’re told how long aunt Sally’s labor was & how many interventions were “required” & how she almost bled to death.

And then, once we start seeing birth on TV and in the movies, it’s always portrayed as a dangerous, intensely medicalized experience with a lot of rushing around, screaming, and machines constantly beeping.

So it’s no wonder that, by the time we get to be pregnant ourselves, we have no idea what our bodies are capable of.

But the truth is, YOU WERE MADE FOR THIS.

For those of you who are about to comment that birth doesn’t always go well & that, even in undisturbed births there can be complications, of course that’s true. My informational posts are always about how the majority of cases go, not the outliers, but I don’t deny that the outliers exist. It’s a waste of your time to argue with someone who doesn’t disagree with you, so please don’t bother.

If we trusted our bodies to birth like we trust them to digest food or pump our blood or do any of the other incredible processes they do without help or even a thought, the world would be in an entirely different place.

⬆️Vertical Birth⬇️

It can be so easy or so complicated. It’s understanding the physiology that makes the most difference in outcome.
⬇️
Less than 10% of women in the U.S. give birth in a standing and/or vertical position.
⬇️
This is due to the large use of anesthesia, technology, fetal monitoring, interventions, convenience and the feeling of not having a choice in birthing positions.

𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙗𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙝:
👍🏼the need for pain medication decreases
👍🏼labour is shorter
👍🏼pelvic space is increased by up to 30% which aids natural descent and rotation of baby
👍🏼it’s the best position to aid physiological birth
👍🏼better blood flow to baby which decreases the chances of fetal distress
👍🏼decreases the need for emergency cesarean, episiotomy, vacuum or forceps
👍🏼less likely to need medical help
👍🏼helps aid the natural urge to bear down once you are fully dilated and effaced
👍🏼contractions are more effective
👍🏼gravity aids the progression of baby going down into the pelvis and out of the birth canal
👍🏼birthing parents overall satisfaction of the birth increases

💁🏽‍♀️Talk with your provider about birthing positions. If you’re provider is not comfortable or supportive of choosing an upright birth, it may be time to switch providers.

Contact naps are not a bad habit.

If you believe everything the old school sleep advice says about baby sleep, then contact naps are a definite no-go.

You'll be told you're making a rod for your back or setting yourself up for huge problems later on. Or you'll be told you're doing your baby a disservice because you're not helping them develop the skill of sleeping independently.

What a load of nonsense!

There's a good reason why your baby wants to sleep on you. They're not forming bad habits or manipulating you.

They're doing what they need to do in order to THRIVE.

Because contact naps are super duper healthy for your baby. Here are some of the reasons:

✦ Their parasympathetic nervous system is turned on so they feel safe - there’s no fight, flight, freeze.
✦ Oxytocin, the love hormone which helps promote trust, empathy and bonding is stimulated,
✦ Their stress response and cortisol levels are regulated,
✦ They benefit from emotional contagion, which means they are influenced by the relaxed body of their caregiver and feel similar feelings,
✦ They receive multi sensory input, which helps their developing brains
✦ They benefit from mimicry of breathing and heart rate, and their heart rate is less variable
✦ The brainwaves can synchronise between baby and caregiver
✦ Their quiet sleep duration can be increased

What about for you - what are the benefits for you? Well, it can stimulate oxytocin for you, too, and can give you a chance to slow down and relax. It's a great bonding moment.

But it can sometimes feel a bit frustrating, even when we take out the issue of misguided expectations and unnecessary concerns over bad habits.

Sometimes we need to get other things done, or we just want some time not in contact with another human being. And that's ok too! We are allowed to have boundaries and fill our own cups, too.
