Marie Antoinette syndrome, or canities subita, is a rare condition where hair turns white abruptly, historically linked to extreme emotional stress, fear, or grief. It is often associated with alopecia areata, where pigmented hair is shed rapidly, leaving behind white hair. While often considered a legend from Queen Marie Antoinette’s imprisonment, documented cases exist.
Symptoms and Causes
Rapid Greying/Whitening: The primary symptom is the sudden whitening of scalp hair.
Underlying Mechanism: It is generally considered a form of rapid-onset alopecia areata (autoimmune hair loss).
Stress Connection: The condition is triggered by extreme emotional distress, trauma, or severe illness.
Scientific Understanding: While popularly believed to happen “overnight,” hair that has already grown out cannot change color. The phenomenon occurs because the hair follicles stop producing melanin, or rapid shedding of colored hair leaves only pre-existing gray/white hairs, making them appear to turn white rapidly.
Risk Factors and Prognosis
Risk Factors: Extreme trauma, severe emotional shock, or underlying autoimmune conditions.
Prognosis: The condition is often reversible, with hair potentially regaining its natural color once the underlying stressor is removed, though in some cases, it may remain white.
Prevalence: It is extremely rare.
