Happy International Women’s Day! 🌸

Today, we celebrate the strength, leadership, and determination of women everywhere — and that includes the incredible women in our community who chose independent living and life in their own homes.

For many women with disabilities, living in the community isn’t just a preference — it’s a powerful statement about dignity, freedom, and choice.

These women are reminders that independence matters at every stage of life. Their determination helps move our communities closer to a world where everyone has the opportunity to live where and how they choose.

💜 Help us celebrate them today.
Join us in recognizing the women who took that step toward independence and made it happen because every woman deserves the right to call a place home.

Welcome Home, Terry! 🏡✨

Terry is one of the kindest, funniest people you’ll ever meet and he’s already making the most of his new independence! A true social butterfly, he’s been out and about meeting everyone (especially the ladies 😄), attending bingo, and loving every activity he can join.

With his take-charge personality, Terry was one of the easiest transitions we’ve ever done—and he’s so grateful for the Nursing Home Transition program and all it has done for his quality of life. Most importantly… he got his life back! 💛

Here’s to laughter, friendship, and enjoying every moment, Terry! 🥳

Welcome Home, Niki! 🏡✨

After 3 long years in a nursing facility, Niki has finally moved into her own beautiful apartment—and what a place it is! From a fully accessible bathroom (big enough for a bowling alley—almost! 😄) to a washer & dryer right in her unit, her new home is the perfect space for her independence.

Niki’s journey hasn’t been easy; she lost her 4 children to foster care, faced health challenges beyond her control, and endured heartbreak with her children’s adoption. Yet, through it all, she smiles every day, full of gratitude, respect, and resilience. 💛

Before her illness, Niki was a skilled welder, and that same strength and determination shines through today. She has formed a special bond with her “backup” and dear friend, Sissy, who lost her own siblings in the same facility. Together, they created the perfect support team; Sissy is now stepping into the role of Niki’s caregiver. Truly, teamwork makes the dream work! 🌟

Her team is already planning a housewarming party to celebrate this incredible milestone, and we couldn’t be more excited for her next chapter of independence and joy.

Welcome home, Niki! 💖

Welcome Home, David!

Join us in celebrating David, who has officially returned to community living and is settling into his new apartment. After entering a nursing facility in May 2024, David knew he wanted the opportunity to live life on his own terms again.

Today, he’s enjoying the comfort and independence of having a place of his own. With support from Roads to Freedom's Nursing Home Transition team, David was able to receive the furniture and household essentials needed to make his apartment feel like home. His recliner has quickly become his favorite spot, so much so that it was where he spent his first night back home!

David is also getting out and reconnecting with the community with the help of his new caregivers. They’ve already taken a trip out together for tacos, marking the start of many more moments of independence and enjoyment ahead.

💚 We’re so happy to see David thriving at home. Welcome back to community living, David!

Welcome Home, James!

Please join us in celebrating James, who has officially moved into his new apartment after spending the last six years in a nursing facility. Before that, James’ family provided his care, but this is the very first time he has had a place of his own.

While living in the facility, James felt he didn’t have the freedom to live life on his own terms. Today, that has changed. In his new apartment, James says he finally feels like he has control over his life and his future.

With furniture and housing essentials provided through Roads to Freedom's Nursing Home Transition program, James is settling in and already getting out to explore and get to know his new community.

Stories like James’ remind us why community living matters; everyone deserves the opportunity to live independently and make their own choices about how they live.

💚 Welcome home, James!

Happy Read Across America Day!

Today is all about celebrating the joy of reading and making sure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy books. Established by the National Education Association and celebrated on March 2 (Dr. Seuss’s birthday), this day reminds us that access to reading matters for people of all ages.

If reading print has become challenging, ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY can help keep the love of reading alive. You can try these devices for free through Tech OWL - Technology for Our Whole Lives' Assistive Technology Lending Library!

Here are a few of the reading tools featured in the image:

🔎 Reveal 16i Magnifier

📖 Smart Reader
A portable reader/scanner that uses a camera and OCR to read printed text out loud or display it on a monitor, making reading easier for people with low vision.

✏️ C-Pen Reader 2
A handheld scanning pen that reads lines of text aloud and can even help look up words in its built-in dictionary—great for books, mail, or school materials.

Everyone deserves access to stories, information, and learning. If you’d like to try these devices and more, the Lending Library is free for Pennsylvania residents.

March is a powerful month for awareness, inclusion, and community. 💙💛

March is both Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month—a time to recognize the experiences of people with disabilities and make sure everyone has the tools they need to live, work, and participate in their communities.

One way we can support independence is through assistive technology.

Pennsylvania residents can borrow devices for free through Tech OWL - Technology for Our Whole Lives' Assistive Technology Lending Library.

You can try before you buy tools such as:
• Mobility and safety equipment like walkers, grab bars, and shower chairs
• Daily living tools like reachers, adaptive kitchen items, and dressing aids
• Communication devices and AAC tools
• Smart technology and voice-activated supports
• Cognitive supports like reminders, apps, and organizers

These tools can make everyday tasks easier and help people with disabilities stay active and independent in their homes and communities.

If you or someone you support could benefit from assistive technology, we’re here to help you explore options through the Lending Library.

Our History

On October 1, 1995, CILNCP began as a satellite office of the Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania, located in Camp Hill, PA. The Satellite office opened at 210 Market Street, Williamsport, PA under the direction of CILCP Executive Director Theotis Braddy, and CILNCP Project Director George J. Morton. Three years later, CILNCP became an independent Center for Independent Living in Pennsylvania. As of October 1, 1998, CILNCP was granted independent status and was incorporated as CILNCP, Inc. under the 501 © (3) of the IRS Code. As part of our celebration, CILNCP hosted a CILebration banquet on October 1, 1998 at the Genetti Convention Center, in Williamsport, PA. Participants present included CILNCP Advisory Council Members, CILCP Board of Directors’ Members, and several staff members from both CILNCP and CILCP. Also, at this time the CILNCP Advisory Council became the Board of Directors of the newly independent CILNCP, and George J. Morton was appointed as the CILNCP Executive Director.

Communities that take pride in their accessibility for all, understand the importance of including and consulting the disabled community on matters that impact them. Disability advocacy is a non-partisan subject. Our elected leaders, especially on the local level, need to be cognizant of the disability community they serve. We are not invisible citizens within our community.
