I get asked every week, “were you a dancer?” when I’m doing / demonstrating exercises on the reformer. The answer is no. I train dancers because I understand the body and I believe in the whole philosophy of pilates. I always say that Pilates and dance compliment eachother so well. Those of you who know me, my daughter is a Dancer, a beautiful and talented one. I have been a “dance Mom” for MANY years and I just might be living vicariously through her but …2 days ago I took my very first adult contemporary dance class! Through the years of being in awe watching her dance, my favorite “style” of dance has become contemporary. I just find it so beautiful , expressive and well, I’ll admit the one that reminds me the most of Pilates. I’ve been searching for an adult class and finally found one . As I was driving there I was unsure I was going to walk in. It was the text I got from my daughter that said, “don’t be nervous, you got this” that made me walk in. I practiced what I preach today. I stepped out of my comfort zone and showed up. I could do everything at a snail pace and was not terrible but putting it all together, not so good but I did it. I was the oldest one in class, I wasn’t tired but overwhelmed for sure. I ate the warm ups and the jumps but felt like a 5 year old as the other students were flowing through the combo. Like I tell all of my clients , keep coming and showing up, you will feel and see results. So, I will keep showing up. Learning something new in my 40’s especially contemporary dance is scary but also empowering because it is not easy and it’s different. At the end of class, the instructor and I were talking and my moment of humbleness was when she said she loves and hates pilates because she knows how great it is for us but she’s terrible at it!! The Irony!! Hopefully I inspired her to give Pilates another chance because she inspired me to keep coming. Two women , both instructors of fitness but very different forms inspired eachother!
