Bill met Jane Kristen Anderson while attending a dance at UCONN. They were married on June 22, 1968. He was a loyal and dedicated husband, father, and friend. He also loved his weekly pizza nights, his 1 beer before bed, and his coffee. Bill will be remembered for his humility and willingness to help anyone in need, his integrity, and his quiet strength that touched everyone who knew him. Terry R. Webster

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Terry R. Webster, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law, age 87, of Storrs, Connecticut, on January 18, 2025. Terry was known for his warm smile, his deep knowledge of all things plant and garden related, his pride in his family, and his ability to sink a jump shot on the basketball court.

Terry was born on February 10, 1938 in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent his childhood in Middletown, Ohio, with parents Richard and Florence Webster. His childhood was filled with endless happy hours playing baseball and basketball in the neighborhood, swimming and lifeguarding, and working at Boy Scout camp. Terry earned the title of Eagle Scout, showing his love of the outdoors from an early age.

Terry earned a BS from Miami of Ohio University, and a PhD in Botany from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He joined the faculty of the Botany Department at the University of Connecticut in 1965, and retired from the Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in 1998. Terry’s research focused on the developmental morphology of non-seed vascular plants, especially those in the Selaginella family (a small fern). He was the chair of the UConn Greenhouse Committee for many years, and after retiring, he served as an academic advisor, giving excellent one-on-one attention to students. He was a dedicated and creative teacher and was a recipient of a university-wide Teaching Fellow award.

Terry and his wife Joan met in Saskatchewan, married in Ontario, and were married for 61 years. A couple that was devoted to each other to the end, they enjoyed time with family, trips to warmer climates, and shared an appreciation of jazz and bossa nova with son-in-law Robson. Joan and Terry loved raising a family together in Storrs, with all the beauty of nature, arts activities, and sports events available on campus. They had a shared sense of humor and enjoyed hearty laughs together from their very first date in a Saskatoon coffee shop.

Terry was honest, loyal, hard-working, caring, and he made sure to make time for play and the activities that he loved. He had a great sense of humor, which especially came out when trading tall tales with his gym buddies. He took great joy in tending to his many gardens and yard, and diving into hands-on projects, such as making rustic furniture from wood harvested from his land. He rarely missed an opportunity to take a clipping of interesting plants he encountered to add to his garden. A lifelong athlete, he found great joy playing sports with friends, as well as solo pursuits such as canoeing and swimming. He played basketball through his 70’s, loved running, tennis, taking long walks, and was an avid fan of the UConn and NBA basketball teams. Favorite activities included canoeing in the Mansfield Hollow Dam, and driving his Jeep to the beach in Rhode Island. He delighted in playing games with his grandson Lucas, and more recently seeing his grandson grow up and develop an interest in plants and spending time in nature. He shared his knowledge and passions by teaching, leading “Greenhouse Friday” tours at UConn, and giving guided tours of his own carefully curated fern garden. Through the UConn Museum of Natural History, he led trips to the Turks and Caicos Islands, where his brother-in-law and niece hosted the groups at their beautiful property and restaurant. He was a lifelong learner and avid reader, and also wrote short stories. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Terry is survived by his wife Joan Webster, daughter Jennifer (Webster) Goulart, son-in-law Robson Goulart, grandson Lucas Goulart, and beloved nieces, nephews, and a sister-in-law. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers for their compassionate and competent care at the end of Terry’s life.

Friends, family, and colleagues are invited to attend a Memorial Service which will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 1pm, at Storrs Congregational Church, 2 North Eagleville Road, Storrs, Connecticut. A reception at the church will follow the service.

Those wishing to honor Terry’s memory may consider a donation to the UConn Botanical Conservatory through the UConn Foundation at s.uconn.edu/botancon

Grant E. Spinner

On December 16th Grant E. Spinner of Columbia, CT was called home by the Lord. Grant is predeceased by his parents Roy and Annabell. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Toni Gale (Bergeron) Spinner as well as his two brothers and their wives, Clifford and Beth Spinner of Columbia and Carl and Kathleen Spinner of Lebanon. He leaves behind many cousins, nephews, nieces, godsons, and friends that held a very special place in his heart.

Grant was raised on a small farm in Constable, NY before his family eventually relocated to Willimantic, CT. After graduating as valedictorian from Windham Tech in 1973 he ultimately made his career as a union electrician and was a member of IBEW Local #457. He lost sleep, missed holiday celebrations, braved inclement weather and faced the cold dark of night to keep the lights on for the Eversource customers that he served. Outside of his career, Grant was an active member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and The Windham Fish and Game Club. During his free time, Grant enjoyed fishing, hunting, ci**rs, whiskey, and impeccably maintaining his home and his vehicles. There was no better person to call for advice on a technical challenge and no one more generous with their time, advice, and labor.

In lieu of flowers please consider grilling up one of Grant’s favorite Glazier Hot Dogs, sipping a glass of fine whiskey, and making a generous gift to help the kids and their families at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

An avid fisherman, Fred found his greatest enjoyment wading Connecticut trout streams, taking the long way home, and savoring life’s quieter moments. He never met a stranger and was known for his easy conversation, generosity, sense of fun, and a quick joke that could put anyone at ease.

Above all, Fred was a devoted father. Robert H. Lyder

Robert H. Lyder. “Pop Pop”, age 83 of Coventry, CT, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 14th at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT.

Bob was born in Rockville Centre, N.Y. to George and Murial Lyder on March 12, 1942. As a graduate of Adelphi University, he went on to have an accomplished CPA career operating his own firm for decades.

Bob had a fierce passion for golf and always seemed to be playing or practicing. He was always eager to talk about his love for golf. Bob also loved his yard, and his labor kept it tidy, beautiful and well respected. It was very much a source of pride.

Pop Pop was a devoted family man. Always a giver of good advice while also making sure we were all on the right path were continuous gifts he gave. Quite simply, Bob was a good and solid man. You knew where you stood with him and what he valued. If you were Bob’s friend, you were a friend for life.

Bob is survived by his children Jennifer, Christopher and David (spouse Deirdre). His loving partner of forty-six years, Marie, and her children Dana (spouse David), Dennis, Daniel and David. His grandchildren, Emma, Madison, Lindsey, Erin, Sullivan, Ryan and Ava. His great grandson, Atticus. And his partner in crime and close friend Bill Hall.

Bob loved his family and friends very much. He had a deep well of love that was rarely publicly shown, however, Bob’s actions always spoke so loudly you just knew how much he cared. He will be missed tremendously and remembered always.

Next time you dine out please overtip your waitstaff in Bob’s name. He would have wanted that as he himself did this on a daily basis.

Please consider making a donation in Bob’s name to the Brain Injury Alliance Connecticut at www.biact.org.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Potter Funeral Home.
