Congratulations to the state workers AND the taxpayers of Vermont. The labor relations panel unanimously ruled that the Governor’s forced commuting for state employees violated the rules, the law, and the contract.

Let's be clear. There is ample evidence that:

1) Work productivity is high, and worker satisfaction is higher, with the option to work from home when such work is feasible.

2) There are many benefits for Vermonters when State employees commute less. More productivity, higher worker retention. Higher job satisfaction. And less commuter traffic.

3) More efficient use of taxpayers' money. The State does not need to pay millions in additional rent for unnecessary office space.

4) More accessible jobs for Vermonters who can apply and accept state jobs anywhere across the state without needing to move. Under Gov. Scott's mandate, you would likely need to move closer if you got the job. Remote work allows for a larger pool of applicants across the state.

While the Governor is mad that the state needs to reimburse the employees for the unlawful order he issued, he only needs to look in the mirror and reflect on the extra costs he has imposed on Vermont taxpayers.

Finally, the Governor chastised the board in a highly political way, blaming the board for a "flawed, biased decision made by a non-judicial board outside the court of law." But he appointed the whole panel, and it is 100% their job to arbitrate such matters. He even appointed the professional HR person who joined the unanimous decision. After 10 years in office, he still points fingers and blames others for the job he is supposed to do as the head of state. He cannot hide behind the legislature on this one.

Vermont’s dedicated state employees deserve more respect from Vermont’s Governor.

We are devastated to learn, along with the rest of the UVM Health community, about the detention of Pastor and LNA Steven Tendo. This is tragic news for Steven and his family. It is also an example of how the current actions of ICE are causing real harm in our communities and our health care system. We stand with Steven’s family, colleagues and friends in calling for his immediate release and return home.

Steven Tendo was DETAINED when he has his next check in this coming Friday with them.
He has been doing everything he has been asked, he’s been nothing but a hard worker here at UVMMC and at his secondary job.
HE BROKE NO LAWS! He was DETAINED because he is a refugee!
SSU Members are standing outside where there is an EMERGENCY RALLY being held outside @ 64 Gricebrook Road, St Albans Vermont!

Nurses at Northwestern Medical Center formed a union almost 11 months ago and are negotiating their first contract. NMC management is refusing to move on central key bargaining priorities such as:

-- Staffing ratios that ensure every patient receives quality care, and nurses are able to attend to their basic needs throughout the day.

-- A sustainable on call system so that nurses providing critical care are well-rested.

-- A competitive starting wage that allows NMC to recruit and retain qualified nurses. The starting wage at UVM Medical Center is $10.33/hour higher than NMC -- a difference of 36%.

-- Policies that prevent workplace violence and provide care for nurses who experience violence during their shifts.

-- Policies that would prioritize local nurses' schedules and compensation over travel nurses.

Nurses' working conditions are patient's healing conditions. We need nurses who are respected, well-rested, safe, and can afford to live here!

Nurses carry patients through their worse times and best moments. For patients like Pedro and his mother, Ana, who have known his nurses for years, they know nurses are the difference in care. Together, they’re calling on hospital management to step up and negotiate a fair contract.
Nurses want nothing more than to return back to the bedside and care for our patients.

We, the journalists of VTDigger, have been at the bargaining table for a year — and are close to securing a more equitable and transparent contract. But a critical sticking point remains: artificial intelligence, and the uncertainties it presents to the future of our local newsroom. VTDigger manag...
