Often times , there is insufficient room for your 3rd molars to properly erupt into your oral cavity. We unfortunately have to make the recommendation that they be extracted. Perhaps in the future these "stem" cells that make up that tooth could be used to heal parts of your body.

New research reveals that your wisdom teeth may hold a surprising secret. Scientists have discovered that these often-removed teeth contain powerful stem cells capable of repairing and regenerating tissue in the heart, brain, and bones. This breakthrough highlights an untapped potential in our own bodies to promote healing and fight disease.

Stem cells from wisdom teeth can develop into different types of cells, including those that repair damaged heart tissue, regenerate neurons in the brain, and strengthen bones. This means that, in the future, discarded wisdom teeth could become a valuable source for personalised regenerative therapies. The discovery opens exciting possibilities for treating heart disease, neurodegenerative conditions, and bone injuries with a patient’s own cells, reducing the risk of rejection and side effects.

Experts emphasise the importance of continued research to fully understand how these stem cells can be harvested and applied safely. While wisdom teeth are often considered a nuisance, this study shows they could be a hidden treasure for modern medicine. Preserving these teeth could one day provide patients with life-changing treatments that repair the body from within.

Brushing too hard can damage your teeth and gums. You may think aggressive brushing means better cleaning, but it can lead to gum recession, enamel wear, and tooth sensitivity. Opt for soft-bristled toothbrushes instead and hold it at a 45-degree angle using circular motions. Your teeth need care, not force. Questions about your brushing technique? Call us at (440) 944-7775.

Won't hurt to try.

Scientists have identified a natural compound called DIM, short for diindolylmethane, that shows remarkable ability to break down cavity causing dental plaque. DIM is a molecule formed when the body digests compounds found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. In laboratory studies, researchers observed that DIM disrupted bacterial biofilms responsible for tooth decay.

Dental plaque is not just loose bacteria. It forms a sticky biofilm that protects harmful microbes and allows them to damage tooth enamel. The study found that DIM interferes with the structure of this biofilm, eliminating up to ninety percent of cavity causing plaque under controlled conditions. By breaking down the protective barrier, bacteria become far more vulnerable and less able to survive.

Researchers noted that DIM does not act like traditional antibiotics. Instead of killing bacteria indiscriminately, it weakens their ability to organize and attach to surfaces. This reduces the risk of resistance and preserves healthy oral bacteria balance.

While these results come from laboratory testing and not human clinical trials, the findings highlight DIM’s potential role in future dental care strategies. Scientists believe this natural molecule could inspire new approaches to preventing cavities by targeting plaque at its structural core.
