For decades it has been used to treat divers with the ‘bends’ — potentially deadly nitrogen bubbles that can form in the blood when surfacing quickly from deep water. But pressurised chambers that deliver 100 per cent oxygen to the body can also bump-start the healing process, and they are now being used for a wide range of conditions from diabetic ulcers to damage caused by cancer radiation treatment. It’s even being investigated as a way to reverse ageing.

Research this month suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), as it is medically known, could be a treatment for dementia.

Senior Care for Diabetic

Home care allows seniors to live independently while giving their families peace of mind. It becomes more essential in the case of adults with diabetes. Diabetic seniors need such home care services even more as they may find it difficult to manage all of their health needs owing to the complications of this disease. The older individual with diabetes is more likely to have other health problems. The combination of advanced age with diabetes requires senior care for a diabetic.
Proper Monitoring

Though there is currently no treatment for curing diabetes, but it can be controlled with the right medications and healthy eating habits. It is essential to track the senior’s blood sugar levels. But if the seniors themselves track it, the too high or too low levels can affect brain function. A home care health professional gives peace of mind to seniors with diabetes. They assist them with medication monitoring and can get help in any situation. Help-U-Care

August 31, 2020 - A team from Stevens Institute of Technology has developed an artificial intelligence tool that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease with more than 95 percent accuracy, eliminating the need for expensive scans or in-person testing.

In addition, the algorithm is also able to explain its conclusions, enabling human experts to check the accuracy of its diagnosis.

Alzheimer’s disease can impact a person’s use of language, the researchers noted. For example, people with Alzheimer’s tend to replace nouns with pronouns, and they can express themselves in a very roundabout, awkward way.

Published in the journal Science, a new study has shed light on a cellular process that occurs in the retinas of people with diabetic retinopathy. This discovery could lead to the development of a treatment for this serious complication of diabetes.

The research was led by Dr. Przemyslaw (Mike) Sapieha and Dr. François Binet in collaboration with Dr. Frédérick Antoine Mallette and Dr. Flavio Rezende of the Center de recherche de l'Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (CR-HMR), which is part of the Center intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux de l'Est-de-l'Île-de-Montréal, and Dr. Jean-Sébastien Joyal of the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center, affiliated with Université de Montréal and also with Dr. Jean-François Côté of the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM).

Diabetic retinopathy is characterized by vascular degeneration and later the formation of abnormal blood vessels in the retina. This vascular proliferation compromises the nerve cells that carry information from the eyes to the brain.

The study demonstrates that to stop abnormal vascular proliferation, blood vessels apply a series of molecular "brakes" that become activated in a way similar to an accelerated version of natural cellular aging. Collectively, these mechanisms culminate in a process called cellular senescence, which eventually causes tissue scarring in the retina.

When in senescence mode, blood vessels produce inflammatory molecules that become targets of immune cells called neutrophils. Although thought to be the immune system's first responders, the study shows that neutrophils arrive in the retina later on to help clean and remodel damaged blood vessels. They do this through an unconventional cellular mechanism of releasing neutrophil extracellular traps (or NETS) made up of their own DNA onto diseased blood vessels. Help-U-Care

New research has shown some of our least favorite vegetables could be the most beneficial when it comes to preventing advanced blood vessel disease.

Published in the British Journal of Nutrition the research has found higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, is associated with less extensive blood vessel disease in older women.

Using data from a cohort of 684 older Western Australian women recruited in 1998, researchers from ECU's School of Medical and Health Sciences and The University of Western Australia found those with a diet comprising more cruciferous vegetables had a lower chance of having extensive build-up of calcium on their aorta, a key marker for structural blood vessel disease.

Blood vessel disease is a condition that affects our blood vessels (arteries and veins) and can reduce the flow of blood circulating around the body. This reduction in blood flow can be due to the build-up of fatty, calcium deposits on the inner walls of our blood vessels, such as the aorta. This build-up of fatty, calcium deposits is the leading cause of having a heart attack or stroke. Help-U-Care

There are several widely-accepted pillars in the fight to overcome a pandemic. Among them are distancing, density control, testing, contact tracing, isolating, and wearing face masks. But near-universal acceptance – at least by the healthcare community – doesn't mean implementing these measures is simple. Putting politics aside, we face the ongoing challenges of insufficient resources, including hospital space, equipment, staff, and PPE. And, of course, with any type of public health issue, we struggle with getting people to comply.

COVID-19 testing is critically important in our fight to control this pandemic. And, because of the efforts of thousands, we've made incredible strides in our testing capacity.

Dr. Lauren Van Scoy, an associate professor of medicine, humanities and public health sciences, and lead author of the study published in JAMA Network Open, said that after playing the game, 98% of participants engaged in some form of advanced care planning, including about care preferences with family members and completing or updating advanced directives, where an individual outlines their preferences for end-of-life medical care.
