A lot of parent worry about them~ can they cause a gap in their teeth? 😁
Studies suggest no!
Do they cause issues with nursing? 🤔
Sometimes! If baby is unable to fl**ge at the breast, it can be hard to create a seal. Possibly leading to more air intake or shallow latch.
Its important to have an IBCLC or Frenectomy *team* that assesses both appearance AND function. We also always want to use surgery as the last resort. Your team may have other suggestions before referring for a release of these tissues.

Looking at the whole baby, not just the mouth is so important!
We look at function, not just the physical restrictions. Sometimes when those oral restrictions are present, it can cause tension and uncoordinated movements in baby.

Ouch!! Vasospasms can be linked to poor latches caused by oral restrictions. It's important to have an IBCLC assess latch and baby's oral anatomy when having pain during feeds.
