“Since you see this every day... what is the ONE piece of advice you can give me?”

We figured they were probably waiting for a secret labor hack or a list of “must-have” baby gadgets.

We looked at them and realized that all the professional training in the world doesn’t compare to the power of one simple and honest truth.

We told them, “We actually have nothing, other than this. You are going to do a great job. All you can do is the best you can and that is *exactly* what your baby needs.”

As doulas, we spend so much time preparing families for the “how-to,” but the most important thing we can ever teach is the “you’ve got this.”

The longer we do this work, the more we realize how much pressure is put on parents to “optimize” every moment.

In planning for the “perfect” scenario, what is often forgotten is trusting the person in the center of it all. You.đŸ„č

So, if you’re scrolling feeling totally overwhelmed by the “shoulds” or the “what-ifs,” let this be your permission to take a deep breath.

There is no secret.
There is just you,
doing your best for you and your baby,
and that is the most beautiful thing.

You’ve got this (and we’re always in your corner).đŸ€

Getting ready for the journey of a lifetime? Here are some essentials to include in your hospital bag:

👝🧩Labor & Postpartum Must-Haves: Don’t forget comfy clothes, socks, and slippers for pacing the hallways during labor. Pack toiletries, lip balm, and hair ties to keep you feeling fresh.

đŸȘȘImportant Documents: Remember your ID, insurance card, birth plan, and any medical records. Most hospitals have a pre-check in forms you can fill out in pregnancy so be sure to complete those. However, having these ready will help streamline the check-in process once you arrive.

📚🎧Entertainment & Distraction: Bring your favorite book, playlist, favorite game or something to work on if you knit or needlepoint. Labor (especially inductions) can take time, and having something to pass the time, give your hands something to do and can help you relax. (Don’t forget your charger!)🔌

đŸ„šđŸ§ƒSnacks & Hydration: Pack your favorite non-perishable snacks, some easy protein like Chomps, your fave electrolyte drink packets and a refillable water bottle. Staying nourished and hydrated is essential.💧

😌Comfort Items: A pillow from home, a cozy blanket, and your own pillowcase can add a touch of comfort to your hospital stay. Sometimes the room can get really cold and you can even get hot during labor so a portable fan (like one you may already have for your stroller!) can really come in handy!đŸȘ

đŸŒBaby Essentials: Don’t forget baby’s first outfit, swaddles, and a going-home outfit. Also, have the
car seat ready for the journey home!

April is Cesarean Awareness MonthđŸ€

Birth is a massive, life-altering threshold and it doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For some of you, a cesarean birth was the plan from day one. You chose it for your mental health, for the stability of a schedule or even maybe it was the path that let you feel most in control and empowered. There is so much beauty and autonomy in being ready to meet your baby on your own terms.

For some, it was the “plan b” that you didn’t think would actually happen. It was the moment you had to dig deeper than you ever thought possible and surrender your original vision to ensure you and your baby’s safety. That transition from the labor room to the OR takes a level bravery that is nothing short of heroic.

Whether you felt the joy of a planned arrival or the weight of an unexpected turn or maybe a mix of many different emotions, there is one thing we can say for certain
You laid on that table and you gave everything for your baby. You navigated the sting of the recovery, the first walk down the hallway that felt like a marathon and the reality of healing from a major abdominal surgery freshly postpartum while still showing up for a tiny human who needs you.

Your birth story is never “less than.” Your birth story is one of strength, sacrifice and soo much love.

Maybe you’re feeling confident in your birth story or maybe you’re still navigating complex feelings around your birth. We celebrate all feelings here with us.đŸ€

If you’ve been through it, tell us: What’s one thing you’re proud of about your birth?👇

In honor of world doula week, we are celebrating the behind the scenes work of what it really means to serve others giving birth.đŸ€Ž

Being a labor doula means living a life that’s often beautifully unpredictable. It’s truly a flexible job most of the time, allowing us to be present for our families in ways many careers don’t. However, the “on call” isn’t just a phrase we use. Being on call is a lifestyle that comes with its own unique set of challenges, especially when you have your own children & little ones.

There are moments when “on call” means abruptly pausing playtime with your child, explaining that another baby is on its way, and quickly transitioning from building block towers to packing our bags and getting childcare lined up.

It means meticulously planning our family’s schedule months in advance, knowing that even the best-laid plans can change in an instant when a client goes into labor.

We might miss important family events or have to rearrange celebrations, all in service of supporting a new family on their journey.

In those unexpected moments, it’s a testament to the incredible support system we build. From partners, family, babysitters and friends who step in without hesitation. (We couldn’t do this work without you, thank YOUđŸ€Ž)

While it can be a juggle, the privilege of witnessing new life & supporting birthing families, while being able to provide for our own family, makes every one of these sacrifices worthwhile.

Being a doula truly is calling we love, with all its beautiful complexities.đŸŒ»

During labor, your doula takes care of all of the little things that will help you have a birth you can feel great about.đŸ€

Here’s just some 😉 of what we do during labor support👇

đŸ€Continuous physical and emotional supportđŸ€
A big factor in a successful labor is the ability to relax
and stay calm. We help you do this by being by your side for each step, providing physical support like
hip squeezes and position changes, as well as emotional support like addressing your fears and
working through anxiety.

đŸ€Creating a safe spaceđŸ€
Your labor will progress faster when you feel safe and supported. This means creating an environment that you can truly relax in, with people that you feel truly supported by! We’ll talk about this during our prenatal meetings, and then when the big day comes, help you put our plan into action.

đŸ€Support for partnersđŸ€
Your partner is probably your biggest birth support, and we’re here to support them! During labor, we’ll give them tips and tricks to allow them to be as involved as possible, all while making sure they’re up to date and informed on everything that’s going on and providing them emotional support, too.

The shift from early labor into active labor isn’t always immediate or clear. Every labor has its own unique path. You may realize that the distractions aren’t working anymore and contractions are getting longer, stronger and closer together.

The laundry is folded, the Netflix show is turned off, and the jokes start to stop being funny. Active labor is less about “waiting to see” and more about just getting through the next minute.

It’s the phase where you stop asking “is this it?” and start looking for a rhythm. You might find yourself leaning over the sink, sitting on the toilet, or just staring at the tile floor. It’s a focus that requires you to be completely internal.

Your world gets very small, very fast. This is the part where the “help” of a doula becomes very practical even in the smallest ways.

ă€°ïžcounter-pressure on your hips that doesn’t stop until the contraction does.

ă€°ïžfresh ice chips or the straw held to your lips between waves.

ă€°ïža subtle reminder to release your shoulders or unclench your jaw

ă€°ïžthe person who knows when to dim the lights or grab a warm blanket without you having to find the words to ask.

As your doula, our job is to be the steady one in the room who isn’t surprised by how hard this is. We’ve seen this shift a hundred times. We know that when you stop talking and start focusing on the bathroom floor, you’re actually getting closer.

It’s a lot of work and it’s okay that it feels like a lot.. You’re doing the hardest part of the job and we’re here to keep you in your zone and make sure you don’t have to think about anything else.đŸ€

The first phase of birth, early labor, is often the most misunderstood because it can feel so ordinary.

đŸ•°ïžOne minute you’re folding laundry, and the next, you’re pausing to breathe through something that feels very real.

🌙It can feel like that 2:00 am space where the house is quiet and you’re wondering if this is finally the start of your story.

Early labor is often driven by a slow rise in oxytocin, which works best when you feel safe, unobserved, and calm. This is why these early hours are less about ‘active’ effort and more about staying in your own quiet bubble with the things that bring you the most joy. đŸ„°

It can start and stop, take just a few hours or even 24+ hours. It’s a long time to sit with your own thoughts and wonder what comes next.

We can’t predict how the next few hours will go or exactly what the “finish line” looks like, because birth doesn’t follow a script
but your doula can be the steady presence while you wait.

📞 We’re the ones you call to say, “I think things are changing,” and the ones who remind you to eat a snack or close your eyes while you can. We help you tune in with what you need most in that moment. We aren’t there to control your birth, we’re there to make sure you don’t feel alone while you’re in it.

Whether this phase lasts five hours or twenty-five, you’ve got someone in your corner who’s seen the many ways this can go.

Whatever your body needs to do today, we’re right here. đŸ€

When your body has just finished the marathon of birth, it needs a warm invitation to heal. đŸ•Šïž

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the weeks following birth are seen as a time of extreme depletion. Your body has used its “fire” to grow and deliver a human, leaving your internal systems (like circulation and digestion) sluggish. This “cold” state is often where the hormone crash, slow healing and heavy fatigue set in.

At Daybreak, we follow the ProDoula method & we steam your placenta with fresh lemon and ginger before encapsulation.

đŸ«šGinger acts as a thermal catalyst, dispelling “cold” and reigniting your body’s circulation.

🍋Lemon helps move energy, preventing that “stagnant” or heavy feeling that often comes with hormone shifts.

This gentle steaming “pre-digests” the nutrients. Instead of your body wasting its limited energy breaking down a raw supplement, it can easily absorb the iron and hormones it needs.

While we honor these ancient traditions, we operate with high standards and don’t take shortcuts with your safety.

Every encapsulation is performed by specialists certified in: OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, ANSI Food Safety & ProDoula Placenta Encapsulation Specialist Certification.

Our service goes beyond just the capsules. We offer a long-lasting tincture and custom cord keepsake to honor your journey long after the fourth trimester is over.

We are so incredibly thankful when families share their journeys with us! đŸ€

Daybreak started 5 years ago as two moms simply responding to “friends of friends” who needed support. Today, we’ve grown into a team of women who truly live this work.

Whether we’re rushing to school pick-ups or navigating life with our own little ones at home, we are right there in the “thick of it” with you. Balancing nap times and school runs with births and prenatal visits or coming home early morning from a postpartum shift can be a wild juggle at times, but reading words like these makes it all worth it. This is why we do what we do.

Thank you to each family for letting us be part of your village!

Have we supported your family? We’d love to hear your favorite memory in the comments!
