How many of you as a kid grew up thinking you were the weird kid, or made fun of because you’re different?

🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

Yep I was, and am still weird.

So with what I do as a massage therapist who is certified to work on trauma/grief clients, I make sure my clients never feel weird or that you need to “tone it down”.

I allow my clients to be who they are with no apologies.

So if you think you laugh to loud, walk weird, curse too much, have ADHD and you need to fidget your hands, please be who you are in my office!!

Learn boundaries with me, learn to laugh again, learn to cry again. My office is here for all of you to be who you are while getting massaged.

Most of all, find yourself again. I did.

07/22/2024

The Iliotibial Band, also known as the IT Band for short is decent sized tendon on both sides of the legs. The IT Band is a thick, fibrous tendon that's made of elastic-like tissue, similar to a ligament, that connects muscles to bones. It helps keep the knee stable when the leg bends.

What does the IT Band help with/what is its function?

- Stabilizing the knee: The IT band helps stabilize the knee during movement, such as walking, running, and cycling. As the leg bends and extends, the IT band moves over the outer edge of the thigh bone.
- Supporting the knee: The IT band supports the outside of the knee joint, working with the thigh muscles.
- Protecting the outer thigh: The IT band's tendinous fibers act as a natural protector of the outer thigh.
- Extending, abducting, and rotating the hip: The IT band helps extend, abduct, and rotate the hip.
- Pelvic stabilization and posture control: The IT band is formed at the hip by the fascia of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fasciae latae muscles, which helps stabilize the pelvis over the femur during movement.

Did you know that there is a term called IT Band syndrome? Oh yes and it’s not nice.

- The iliotibial band gets irritated or swollen from rubbing against your hip or knee bones. The tendon is on the outside of your leg, and it goes from the top of your pelvic bone down to your knee. It rubs against your bones when it gets too tense (tight). There are many reasons why your iliotibial band might tighten. Reference picture 3 with ways to help a tight IT Band.

However, massage therapy greatly helps the IT Band! Whenever a client comes in with knee pain (typically one side usually) I usually will focus on the hip area/side of the thigh, and 9 times out of ten its the IT Band! So if you are having knee issues, of course get checked out by a doctor if you are very concerned, and then come see me!!

07/15/2024

So I’m sure we all heard the term “Love Language”. Love language doesn’t just go towards a love relationship or marriage, it can be towards a friendship, cousin, parents, or professional relationship. Now obviously within ethics and standards (lol).

So with my trauma/grief certifications, I help my clients re-learn who they are. Either by boundaries or learning their body in a new way, plus many other ways!

So love language really just means you were deprived of one or all in your childhood. This is also where I recommend any client seek a therapist IF your love language is ruining your relationships.

So how do I help with a professional love language?

Words Of Affirmation: Giving my clients positive feedback! Either by letting them know that their muscles are staying in a more relaxed state between each session, or if they tell me a positive goal they made I make sure to acknowledge that and give them a big “HELL YEAH” in my office.

Quality Time: The session with each client is sacred to me and I make sure each minute is spent well. The session with each client is just that, the client and I only! So there is plenty of time for professional quality time together.

Acts Of Service: Well the massage is the biggest act of service (lol). However, there have been many times where a client just shares with me the horrible week they had, or they lost a pet, or anything that is a major negative impact in their life. So with the act of service I may give a client a free add on or one of my gifts in my room that I buy to have on hand. This can teach clients that while it can make you vulnerable while doing an act of service, it makes you feel better to make someone else smile! So I teach my clients that doing an act of service can make you and the person receiving the service feel wanted and acknowledged.

Physical Touch: Now this is to easy, massage from me! However, this is more of a professional touch, a safe touch. With this love language I can teach clients to re-learn what good touch is and how to set boundaries with me, to then further be able to set boundaries with a romantic partner when they are ready. This is my favorite one also because to see my clients who are afraid to be touched fall in love with it just after 60min.

Receiving Gifts: For some clients this can be a little tough, as some trauma may have been abusive and produced guilt in receiving gifts. So how I teach clients that receiving a gift is ok, whether by me being spontaneous and making them feel special in that moment. As I said above there are times many clients tell me a bad week or day they may have had. So in return I help them feel comfortable receiving a gift from someone, because they simply just care. I know that some abusive relationships came with receiving a gift due being abused as a “I’m sorry”. With me it’s simply just a gift with no strings attached.

So with understanding love languages can offer deep insights into your emotional needs and may reflect what you lacked as a child. So this is why I said above that if it is ruining relationships you have, then please seek a therapist to help through this mentally. If you need a reference, I have one!

Just a quick reminder that school is back in session next month for all public schools.

Please check the dates for when school starts and the date of your appointment with me. I have only 3 dates left open in August so if we need to move your massage around let’s do it now.

Please note that kids going back to school is not an excused cancellation and will be counted towards your cancellation and any fees that may occur. Be sure you are putting your appointments on your calendar as to not double book yourself. There is a chance you may have to wait over a month to get back in!

The Achilles Tendon. Did you know this tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body? Sure is! However, it’s the worst if you break that tendon.

So what is the function of the Achilles tendon?

- It helps with walking, running, and jumping, and “pushing off” motion.

It connects the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles in the calf to an insertion point at the calcaneus (heel bone).

So what injuries can occur with the Achilles Tendon? Quite a few unfortunately.

- Tendonitis or the worst type of injury, a tear in the tendon.

Tendonitis: Achilles tendinitis pain most often begins as a mild ache in the back of the leg or above the heel after running or other sports activity. More-severe burning or aching pain might occur after running a long time, stair climbing or sprinting. This can typically just cure itself with rest, massage, chiropractic, PT, and acupuncture. If this tendon does get just strained it can affect your calf muscles and foot muscles until it is no longer strained. If this tendon is tight it can also cause plantar fasciitis!

Tear: The feeling of having been kicked in the calf, pain; possibly severe; & swelling near the heel, inability to bend the foot downward or "push off" the injured leg when walking, inability to stand on the toes on the injured leg, a popping or snapping sound when the injury occurs. If this type of injury occurs you need to see a doctor right away, as this might require immediate surgery! However, for recovery you definitely want to get into PT right away and see me to help with the healing process.

I definitely work on this tendon with every client I see, however if you feel more time might be needed on the lower leg(s) please let me know!

07/03/2024

So the other day I posted about Tennis Elbow, well today let’s talk about Golfers Elbow.

Tennis elbow as I explained is on the outside of the elbow area, where as Golfers Elbow is on the inside of the elbow.

So what is golfers elbow?

- Golfer’s elbow is a form of tendonitis that causes pain in the tendons that connect the forearm to the elbow. The pain centers on the bony bump on the inside of your elbow and may radiate into the forearm. It usually gets better with rest. The medical term is medial epicondylitis. Golfer’s elbow isn’t as well-known as tennis elbow. While both are forms of elbow tendinitis, tennis elbow stems from damage to tendons on the outside of the elbow, while golfer's elbow is caused by tendons on the inside. Golfer’s elbow is less common.

So what might the symptoms be?:

- Stiffness in your elbow, tenderness and pain, usually on the inner side of your elbow or the inner side of your forearm, but you could have pain with certain movements, like making a fist or swinging a golf club. Tingling or numbness in your fingers (usually the ring and little fingers). Weakness in your hands and wrists. M

Golfers elbow, much like tennis elbow, is caused by overuse of the muscles in your forearm. As like tennis elbow, you can get golfers elbow many other ways than just golf.

Since this is also a tendon issue, if you feel you might have golfers elbow coming on be sure to ice it right away! Plenty of rest, massage therapy, chiropractor, & acupuncture all help greatly with this. As like tennis elbow this can take awhile to heal, 6-12 months.

So if you feel you have golfers, elbow, be sure to let me know and I will definitely help you.

Let’s talk about Tennis Elbow. Which is NOT the same as Golfers Elbow. Two very different injuries, but same area.

So tennis elbow is on the outside of the elbow area. So what is tennis elbow?

- An irritation of the tissue connecting the forearm muscle to the elbow. Tennis elbow is when the tissue connecting the forearm muscle to the elbow, called tendons, becomes irritated or inflamed. Repetitive wrist and arm motions can cause it. Pain is on the outside of the elbow, and, sometimes, in the forearm and wrist. The pain of tennis elbow occurs mainly where the tough, cord-like tissues of the forearm muscles attach to a bony bump on the outside of the elbow. Pain can spread into the forearm and wrist.

This injury is not just geared towards tennis players, this injury occurs for anyone who does repetitive arm and wrist movements, yes massage therapist can get this injury if we do not use proper body mechanics! Activities that can cause tennis elbow symptoms include:

- Playing racket sports, especially using backhand, with poor form
- Using plumbing tools
- Painting
- Driving screws
- Cutting up foods for cooking, particularly meat
- Using a computer mouse a lot (not to be confused with carpal tunnel syndrome)

This injury can take awhile to heal even with proper treatment, the pain can last up to 6 to 12 months with treatment.

The pain of tennis elbow can travel from the outside of the elbow into the forearm and wrist.
Pain and weakness can make it hard to: Shake hands or grip an object, turn a doorknob, or holding a coffee cup.

So how to treat this injury?

- SEE ME! (lol)
- Physical therapy
- Chiropractic care
- Acupuncture

With the proper treatment plan this injury can be healed and you’ll be back to playing sports or work in no time!

06/25/2024

I just wanted to say thank you to all my of clients. All of you who have shared your story with me, gave me strength. You think that I only do the healing when it comes to trauma or grief, but you heal also!

So many of you have shown me that a downed dog can get back up. While yes I was abused by my ex….horribly….many of you have had it worse than me, and for that I say thank you for sharing your story and being strong.

All of you give me the strength to get up in the morning on days I feel I can barely get out of bed. When I feel the weight of my trauma hit me on some mornings and I just want to lay in bed all day….you give me the reason to get up.

All of you have taught me to be a better person than I already was. Some of you listened to my story that is recent and all of you have said the same thing, “don’t feel bad for feeling that way”

And I just can’t thank all my clients enough. Thank you for showing me that love comes in all types of relationships. The pure joy I get from some clients just texting me “thank you for helping me” is some thing that money can never buy.

So thank you all for helping me love myself. That’s all :)

06/21/2024

Let’s talk about the Rhomboids major & minor!

So what are the rhomboid muscles?
- The rhomboids are a collective group of muscles formed by the rhomboid major and minor. The rhomboids are important in upper limb movement and stability of both the shoulder girdle and scapula.

So basically they control movement of your shoulders in a rotational movement.

So what happens if the rhomboids become tight?
- Tight rhomboid muscles can cause pain in the upper back, shoulders, or between the shoulder blade and spine. Other symptoms include: Aching, Stiffness, Pinching, Shooting pain, Tingling, Numbness, Painful breathing, Swelling, and Muscle knots.

Does it ever hurt a bit when you take a deep breath in? Most likely it’s your rhomboids that are tight!

Besides the obvious of seeing me, stretching helps big time, heating pad, warm bath (moist heats gets into the muscles fibers better than dry heat), and even acupuncture! Exercising also helps.

So what emotion can get caught in rhomboids (mainly upper back pain in a whole)?
- feeling unloved or not having enough emotional support

Go see Optimum Vitality Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine for acupuncture!

So if you are having any of the issues above let me know! I love working on the rhomboids!

06/20/2024

So as most of you know I am certified for Oncology Massage. This type of massage is for cancer patients only and so unbelievably beneficial!

So what is Oncology Massage?
- As with any good massage session, an oncology massage session looks different for each person. A safe massage plan generally revolves around the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. There are what we call “pumping methods” where I pump the blood towards your heart and not away. Sometimes swelling can occur if lymph nodes are removed or side effects of chemo can also alter the massage Pressure can also vary in the client and how the chemo/radiation may affect a client. So it does vary client to client for what works best. Knowing where a tumor(s) might be, a client’s energy level, and overall how they are feeling each session is very important to know.

Did you know that peppermint aroma therapy helps with nausea from chemo?

So the most common question I get is: “does massage spread cancer?” And the short answer is, ABSOLUTELY NOT. The only area you do not want to massage is where a tumor might be present. So no, massage does not break off tumor tissue and spread cancer. This is a major myth.

So the fun part. The benefits!:
- Reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles and improve a sense of well-being and relaxation, relieve stiffness, reduce pain of headaches and backaches, increase mobility, rehabilitate injured muscles, raise the body’s production of endorphins to improve mood, and to relax the central nervous system so the body has space and time to heal and fight cancer.

Do I need a doctors note in order for a client to receive an Oncology Massage? Yep! While all Oncologist’s encourage their patients to get a massage, there might be certain areas of the body the doctor may want me to avoid massaging(like a tumor), so a note gives that doctor that opportunity to do so.

When is a client no longer considered an Oncology client? So this is really up to the massage therapist, but for me it’s when the doctor clears you of all cancer. Yes cancer can come back, and if it does we will go back to doing Oncology Massage.

So Oncology Massage as you see is extremely beneficial for those who are current cancer patients on so many levels. Of course any questions you may have reach out!!

Don’t forget! My table also lifts hydraulically at the head, so a client can get a tilt upwards if needed. Some cancer patients experience vertigo while getting chemo.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!! Doesn’t matter if they are blood or not! A father is someone you can look up to as a man, as an example.

My father is the reason I know all the Brooklyn wording and how to use them properly lol! He is why I have my humor and dry pan sarcasm. My dad is the reason I have such love for gaming…..he always bought me the new gaming system that came out. My dad is the Sicilian with an attitude…should’ve met his mother.

Now my stepdad! He has been in my life since I was 7! He is the example of what a step parent should be. He raised me and gave me good advice always. Especially when I decided to go out on my own with a business. He said “where you lose clients you gain more”, and it’s so true. He also said “would you rather put money into your business, or give it to Uncle Sam?” My stepdad also treats my mom the way she should be treated, and that is good enough for me.

Both these men have been examples to me of what I should expect from any person in life.

Both my dads have showed me different ways to cook. For instance, how to cook vegetarian and how to cook meat, and I realized I really hate cooking.

So happy Father’s Day to the men who deserve to be called “Dad”.

These are the texts I love to get!!

This is why I work in the trauma/grief field of massage therapy! To hear growth and success stories!!

A client of mine texted me this last night and is just over the moon happy!! While I hear stories of such sadness whether it’s abuse or like this, cancer, to hear a client smile through a phone call or text is what I live for.

This client is now cancer free and looking to get back to a normal life!!

So let’s congratulate this client in their new journey to get back to normal!! Always know I have your backs and will do my best to make you laugh, feel comfortable, and lift you up!!

Woohoooo!!!

06/05/2024

Did you know we can have trauma passed down by DNA?

Yes! It’s called Intergenerational Trauma.

Now this is still under studies and still not fully proven by science, but I am a believer this is true!

So what is Intergenerational Trauma?

Intergenerational trauma is the theory that a trauma that is experienced by one person in a family can be passed down to future generations because of the way that trauma epigenetically alters genes.

Example: A 2015 study on Holocaust exposure and intergenerational effects found an association between preconception trauma and epigenetic alterations in the parent and the offspring. However, this study wasn’t taken as serious due to how small the study group was and lack of blood that was used from the family members.

Basically trauma can be passed down by DNA.

For example my grandma on my mother’s side was a survivor of the Hi**er regime. She was about 8 years old when the war broke out in her town in Germany and lasted well through her teens. The result of that was her physically shaking in her hands and a lot of mental issues from the war. She also met my grandfather who was in the war, thus brining on PTSD from WW2. So both of them had 3 more children, which got the DNA of trauma passed down from WW2! Yes they had a total of 6 children.

Then the Korean War breaks out and my grandpa is called back to battle. He comes back and has more children, one being my mom and now those three kids have WW2 trauma & the Korean War PTSD trauma passed down genetically.

So in conclusion: Trauma can leave a chemical mark on a person's genes, which can then be passed down to future generations. This mark doesn't cause a genetic mutation, but it does alter the mechanism by which the gene is expressed. This alteration is not genetic, but epigenetic.

So like any trauma, whether it’s DNA, environmental, or any other reason to have trauma in our life, self-care is the most important way to heal from trauma!

Happy Birthday to my business!!! 4 years in business on my own!!

What a journey it has been so far! Thank you all so much for supporting my business!

Four years I heard trauma and grief stories, but I’ve also heard stories of growth and empowerment. So many of you have sent me random texts saying “thank you for helping me” or close to it.

It warms my heart when I get those texts! Or when I see the smile on your face after a session.

So thank you all for supporting me and letting me know I can be successful!!
