This afternoon, I came across an image of the President’s swollen legs and disgnosis of Chronic Venous Insufficiency on Fox News. I was thrilled to learn that all the DVT tests were negative. Venous insufficiency can sometimes manifest as ankle swelling, particularly after extended periods of travel, such as long flights. However, it is crucial to rule out other potential causes, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I have been treating this condition for over 25 years and have observed that it can sometimes be the initial sign of venous insufficiency. It is believed to be associated with the negative pressure experienced during air travel. The President’s frequent air travel and the subsequent diagnosis further support this association. It is noteworthy that venous insufficiency affects over 40% of the population, as indicated by various studies. Notably, it primarily impacts pilots, flight attendants, and executives who frequently undertake long flights. Therefore, it is highly advisable to have your legs evaluated and consider wearing compression stockings during extended flights. In summary, if you frequently travel by air, I strongly recommend wearing compression stockings and thoroughly assessing your legs for potential venous insufficiency. It appears that adequate cabin pressurization may play a role in this condition.
