Let’s talk culturally congruent care. This isn’t something that should just be “bonus” when hiring a doula.

It’s not just speaking the same language.
It’s about being seen completely.
It means your traditions aren’t dismissed as old wives tales. Your traditional food isn’t judged. Your family dynamics aren’t misunderstood. Your preferences aren’t labeled “pointless.” Research consistently shows that when patients feel culturally understood and respected, trust increases and so does satisfaction with care. In birth, trust matters. Safety isn’t just physical. It’s emotional. For many families especially Black and Latino families birth happens inside systems that haven’t always protected or listened to them. Having support that understands your cultural context can change how you experience pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.
Culturally congruent care looks like:
• honoring postpartum traditions
• understanding generational fears
• advocating without escalating
• knowing when language barriers shift power dynamics
• recognizing that birth is both medical and sacred
You deserve care that doesn’t ask you to shrink yourself.
If you’re looking for support that respects your culture and centers your voice, I’m here.
Your birth deserves a team. Link in bio. 🤲🏼🕯️

So many moms say, “My milk hasn’t come in yet.”
But here’s the truth:
Colostrum IS milk. It’s your baby’s first milk. It’s thick, golden, and perfectly designed in small amounts, (emphasis on small!!!) because your newborn’s stomach on day one is about the size of a cherry.
Tiny stomach. Tiny servings.
Colostrum is packed with antibodies, immune protection, and concentrated nutrition. It’s not “nothing.” It’s not “not enough”. Your body understood the assignment, trust it. Before you doubt it remember: milk doesn’t start on day 3. It just changes on day 3.
Send this to a new mama who needs to hear it. 🤍

One thing I have learned is that breathing isn’t instinctive under stress, it’s something you learn.
Breathing patterns you practice during pregnancy are the ones your body will default to in labor. That’s why breathwork is one of the first things I teach my clients.
Breathing isn’t about being stoic when labor gets intense. It’s about regulating your nervous system so your body can work with labor. A couple of my favorite techniques are extended exhales and using a birthing partner as an anchor. What are yours??

Let’s talk about why Black midwives disappeared from U.S. birth care. It wasn’t because their care was unsafe. It was because their power, knowledge, and autonomy threatened a medical system built on control, profit, and racism. Through licensing laws, hospital mandates, and racist narratives in the early mid 1900s, Black midwives, especially in the South were systematically pushed out of practice.
Two facts the system doesn’t like to talk about:
• In the early 1900s, Black midwives attended the majority of Black births in the South and had lower maternal and infant mortality rates than physician led hospital births at the time.
• Today, Black babies are more than twice as likely to die in their first year compared to white babies while midwifery care is associated with better birth outcomes and lower intervention rates.
Reclaiming midwifery isn’t nostalgia.
It’s life saving. It’s community care. Black midwives and doulas are essential. Then. Now. Always.

Warmth. Sunlight. Rest. Nourishment.
This isn’t some modern wellness trend… it’s ancestral postpartum care.
In TCM, the postpartum body is kept warm to restore energy and protect healing.
In Ayurveda, rest, oil massage, and warming foods stabilize the nervous system.
In Mexico, la cuarentena honors 40 days of caldos, cocoa, atole, warmth, and protection.
In parts of Kenya, new mothers are fed, rested, and surrounded by community, never rushed, never isolated.
Different cultures. Same wisdom.
Science is catching up to what these cultures already knew, that a mother’s recovery shapes her long term health.
This is not luxury.
This is lineage.
Save this for your future self or share it with someone who needs permission to rest 🤎

Casa Canela means ‘Cinnamon House.’ 🌿🤎✨ Cinnamon is grounding, warm, and comforting, kinda like the kind of support I hope to offer every family I walk beside. My work as a birth & postpartum doula is rooted in tradition, but also inspired by the coastal rhythms of Wilmington. Casa Canela is more than a name to me, it’s a home for care, wisdom, and gentle strength.

Our little bundle of joy came into this world late November and we couldn’t be more in love! He is the perfect addition to our family. We love you baby Elio. This birth was so much better than my first. Not “as planned” but much better than my last. I was fully informed on all my decisions and only did things that I wanted. Hopefully next time I won’t have an anterior lip tho 😅🤞🏽 woo baby that was something else 😂

• I know it seems hard, but your neck and back will thank you when you bring baby to b**b and lean back. Set your self up for success with tongs of pillows for beck and arm support or even do a side lying position with baby on the bed! (My personal favorite)
* Avoiding engorgement by making sure your breast are emptied with each feeding and trying to avoid pumping for the first few weeks (unless you are pump feeding). I know you want to build that stash but just wait until you’ve established your supply to avoid engorgement & mastitis. You can always hand express!
* How will I know my baby is getting enough milk if I’m not pumping to see what I produce?! Pumped milk is not an accurate indicator of milk supply. Remember, your baby is 10X better than any pump, at extracting milk. You’ll know your little one is getting enough milk by the amount of wet & soiled diapers.
* Asking for help! Especially professional help from your local lactation consultants. They can make the difference in your breastfeeding journey. Most of the time we are doing all the right things, we just need extra encouragement from professionals. You got this mama!
