Community Partner Spotlight
Horizon House, Inc

For HIV Awareness Month we are highlighting Horizon House Peer Recovery Center in Wilmington. Under the leadership of Samuel Leland, Program Director and P A T H Coordinator, the center offers compassionate support to individuals on their recovery journey.

Horizon House believes everyone deserves the chance to live a fulfilling and self directed life in the community. What began in 1952 as a small support group has grown into a powerful human services organization serving more than five thousand adults each year across Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Their Peer Recovery Center provides person first care that meets people where they are. Services include behavioral health support, homelessness assistance, peer recovery programming, housing and employment resources, and community based services that empower individuals to build the life they want.

We are grateful for community partners like Horizon House who uplift individuals, strengthen communities, and play a vital role in supporting those affected by HIV.

For HIV Awareness Month, I want to travel back in time to 1987 when Delaware held its very first AIDS Walk for Life at Rodney Square. 🌹

Participants tossed white carnations into the Brandywine River to honor lives lost to AIDS. It wasn’t easy to gather support then because stigma was strong, but those who showed up helped spark a movement of courage, compassion.

We’re honored to welcome Marvelyn Brown, an HIV activist who prides herself on ending stigma, to our World AIDS Day Vigil on Monday, Dec. 1, 5–6 PM at First and Central Presbyterian Church.

Diagnosed with HIV at 19, and having little knowledge of the virus, Brown didn’t know HIV could be contracted through heteros*xual s*x. Since then, she has become a powerful voice in HIV prevention and advocacy, inspiring audiences across the globe through her speeches, her Emmy-winning PSA, and her autobiography, The Naked Truth: Young, Beautiful, and (HIV) Positive.

Her work has been recognized by BET, the Magic Johnson Foundation, and numerous media outlets, cementing her as a leading figure in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Join us to hear her story of courage, hope, and her journey with activism.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides care to more than 31,000 Veterans living with HIV—and continues to lead the fight to end the epidemic in America.

Through the Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America initiative, VA is:
✅ Offering HIV testing to every Veteran and more often to those at risk
✅ Rapidly linking newly diagnosed Veterans to effective treatment
✅ Expanding access to quality HIV care and prevention through in-person and telehealth services
✅ Providing PrEP, a medication that can prevent HIV

Together, we can honor our Veterans by ensuring every one of them has access to the care, prevention, and support they deserve.

Last week, AIDS Delaware joined leaders and advocates across our state to continue pushing for meaningful changes to the Pharmacy Benefit Manager ( ) system — because people living with HIV and other serious conditions deserve clarity, affordability, and care they can count on.

We were honored to join in recognizing U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester for her ongoing work to increase transparency and lower costs for patients. Her leadership continues to make a difference for communities that rely on timely, life-saving treatments.

Thank you to all the organizations and partners committed to better, fairer health care in Delaware — and to the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce for hosting this impactful conversation. Presenting the award to the senator: Meridith Rothstein (DBCC), Christopher Otto (Delaware Nurses Association), and Kevin Musto, BSPharm, FAPhA (Delaware Pharmacists Society).

Mental Health Counseling is available to our clients at AIDS Delaware.

Living with HIV can affect more than just physical health. It can also take a toll on mental and emotional well-being. Depression, anxiety, and stigma can make it harder to stay engaged in care or maintain treatment routines.

That is why supporting mental health is an essential part of HIV care. Through counseling, clients can find strength, healing, and tools to live healthy, empowered lives. ❤️
