Better spooktastic than never! 🤙 A little Halloween-time resident retreat does the haunted soul good 👻!! #tossingaxesnotpumpkins
“People are hard to hate close up—move in!” A special thanks to Liz Barfield and Joe Conway for an incredibly engaging discussion on health equity during our weekly educational conference! More to come. #fridayfunday #quoteoftheday
We love medicine, that’s why we’re here. But we all have more to offer—other drives, talents and passions that add color and vibrancy to our lives and those around us. So here is some #medicineandmore
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Cecile Robes on her promotion to Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine through the University of North Carolina Medical School! This is a rigorus process and is a testament to her hard work and dedication to Family Medicine education.
Dr. Robes serves as the residency program's Director of Osteopathic Education and delights in creative ways to teach. Former residents will remember her "Geriatric Olympics" fondly as well as her numerous simulation labs. She has taught nationally on the process for obtaining osteopathic recognition for ACGME accredited programs and is recognized as a leader in this area. She has won the Faculty Preceptor award from the residents and spearheads curriculum on geriatrics, including our home visit and nursing home schedules and teaching, musculoskeletal medicine and dermatology. In addition she serves as the Medical Director for the Care Team clinic and in her "spare time" she volunteers at St. Mary's free clinic and leads the community Youth Offenders program for the New Hanover County District Attorney's office. She will be the Chair for Department of Family Medicine at NHRMC for the upcoming 2 years.
I think we can all agree that she is a superstar!!!
We are wishing Dr. Naomi Flock the best of luck in her new position in Florida. We will miss her! Thanks for all your teaching and excellent patient care over the years.
Oops - she did it again!!!
Coastal Family Medicine is proud to announce that Dr. Catherine Sotir, Predoctoral Director, is the recipient of the Outstanding AHEC Faculty award of 2020! This award is voted on by all 3rd and 4th year UNC-Chapel Hill medical students and is given to a faculty member of any specialty on any AHEC campus in North Carolina.
This is not Dr. Sotir’s first medical student teaching award. She received this same award in 2018, as well as the George T Wolff Award in 2016 for quality community-based medical education. These awards are particularly notable in that Wilmington is UNC’s newest campus, begun in 2016, and has only this year grown to 11 students per year.
Prior to joining the faculty at Coastal Family Medicine Dr. Sotir was faculty at the Brody School of Medicine where she received the Excellence in Teaching Award by both the classes of 2002 and 2003.
In addition to medical student teaching awards, Dr. Sotir was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award by the Family Medicine Residents in Asheville in 1999 and by the Family Medicine Residents here in Wilmington in 2016.
Congrats to our rock star teaching physician!!
I believe this sums up how the residents feel about the year 2020! #wrightsvillebeach #bestboardreview
There is so much more to health than pills and office visits. In fact, the majority of factors that contribute to a person’s health come from outside of medical offices, where our patients live everyday. Inequities in these areas need to be addressed by our society not only because it would improve overall health, but because it’s the right thing to do. #weneedsocialjustice We are so excited to have this painting from local artist @thenightowlsonly to hang in our clinic hall to remind everyone passing through that these issues should not be forgotten and should always be a focus of what we do. @ Coastal Family Medicine
Massive destructive Hurricane Florence? Worldwide pandemic? The Class of 2020 is ready for anything as they cross the finish line here at NHRMC and move on to bigger and better things! Congratulations Robert Alexander, Phillip Deal, Jessica Bitencourt, Alyssa Horne, Sarah Ward and Stephanie Horan (who is crossing her own finish line in labor and delivery!) We will miss you!

Did you remember your medications in your hurricane preparedness kit? If you are running low on your daily medications or will run out in the next week, please remember to refill them before the storm hits so you don’t run out in the days following. During a state of emergency, If you have previously filled your prescriptions at a pharmacy and are currently running out, they will give you a 30 day refill without a doctor order for things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. If you have questions or would like to request a refill please call the clinic. Your medications should be always be there in your hurricane kit, right next to your water, first aid kit and flashlights. #hurricanedorian #medications #staysafe #familymedicine
