Toxic positivity aka dismissive positivity, is the many masks of "positive vibes only" and "I'm fine" when we're not. Toxic positivity expects us to stuff and hide emotions deemed negative or difficult, which invalidates our natural flow of thoughts and feelings.

Our beautiful brains are built to process! And when we allow ourselves to process and acknowledge the tough stuff, we embrace what we need in order to grow. One of my favorite fertile affirmation mantras is Acknowledge, Embrace, Walk Through.

The upbeat intolerance and magical thinking of toxic positivity is heavy.....Its ok to not be ok. Our biggest fear when we lean into difficult emotions, is if we go there, we're gonna stay there! However, that's anxiety and fear lying to us, making us forget our emotions are real and valid. When our thoughts and emotions are honored and felt, it makes room for clarity, hope, and gratitude. It moves us through to grow into compassion, connection and trust.....with ourselves and our tribe!

20 years!!! We ❤️Carousel Center!

If a child begins to talk about an incident or situation, even in a vague manner, allow the child to talk freely. When listening to a child be aware of your facial expression, tone of voice, and body language as that might communicate judgment or blame. Some general tips are:
- Show the child that you take what he or she is saying seriously and you understand. Your response to the child’s disclosure is critical to their healing process.
- Support the child with their disclosure and let them know they did the right thing by telling you. It is common for the abuser to be a trusted person in the child’s life. Feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment are common emotions for victims of child abuse.
- Reassure the child he or she is not to blame for the abuse.
- Tell the child you will take the necessary steps to keep him or her safe.
- Report any concerns to your local Department of Social Services (DSS) and law enforcement.

IMPORTANT:
What Does "Stay at Home" or "Shelter in Place" Mean for You and Your Patients?
Some governors are taking new further action in social distancing and issuing directives for residents to “stay at home” or “shelter in place.” Please know these guidelines are not intended to prevent anyone from receiving or providing needed healthcare, including behavioral healthcare. What does this mean to our teammates, patients and our provider community?
It’s important to understand:
► It's okay to leave home to provide healthcare.

► It's okay to leave home to receive healthcare.

► Healthcare providers, which includes behavioral health providers, should make sure there is good social distancing when possible, such as by taking steps to avoid having patients clustered together in social congregation and by arranging seating as far apart as possible at meals.
For additional peace of mind:
► It’s also okay to go to grocery stores, put gas in cars, take walks outside and order in food delivery.

► At this time, states are not making these orders subject to tickets or fines from public safety officers; patients and teammates do not need to worry about getting stopped and questioned by the police. However, to provide maximum reassurance to our patients and teammates, documentation will be made available to teammates and patients that they may carry to indicate they are an “essential healthcare worker” or a “patient receiving essential healthcare”.

Thank you Carousel Center!!

With schools being closed for weeks, the reality is that child abuse of all kinds will likely increase.

Awareness and vigilance are essential during these times.

🔸Knowing that a significant portion of sexual abuse is perpetrated by family/ caregivers, romantic partners of their parents, and additionally as much as 4️⃣0️⃣% is committed by other adolescents - we need to be smart about how we address situations where our children are with adults or older children.

🔸 Be vocal about your education in body safety with caregivers, including other parents and babysitters - why we give children bodily autonomy, promote privacy, and don’t allow secrets. When others help us promote protective behaviors, our children grow in their understanding of their rights.

🔸Don’t forget to supervise time spent on social media and make sure all accounts are private and review their list of friends/private message. We can expect online predator behavior to increase during this time as well.

🔸 Minimize 1:1 situations when possible - check in from time to time when children are out of view, and make your presence/level of attention known.

🔸After spending time away from you, it’s always a great reason to have a ‘check in’ with children - did everyone behave appropriately? Were the rules of body safety respected? Did you feel safe? - these questions should be just as normal and frequent as asking our children if they behaved and had a good time.

🔸 During these coming weeks it’s wise to amp up awareness efforts here on social media to help educate those we know but don’t necessarily see on a daily basis.

🔸Sexual abuse is likely to happen to numerous children we know, and we have the power and the opportunity to help educate and empower the adults in their lives to be vocal, vigilant, and prepared to protect their children.

🔸if it can spare one child’s life from living with the trauma of sexual abuse, it’s worth it.

Please share so that more families can have the opportunity to learn
