COVID-19 Prevention in the Dental Office
The prevention of COVID-19 in the dental office requires a unique approach. Dentists, hygienists and assistants work in close proximity to their patients and many procedures produce aerosols in the mouth which can increase the risk of transmission from an undiagnosed COVID-19 patient. UVC treatments surface and air treatments are a neccesary tool in your infection control protocol. Check out Lumia Dental using UVC light as part of their Infection Prevention Protocol. UVC is an essential tool to help fight the spread of pathogens including COVID-19.

The UV Flash™ (by HealthGuard UVC) patented highly reflective chamber and UV-C Lamps, breaks the molecular bonds inside microbial DNA, inactivating pathogens. At Hospital Safety Solutions, we believe that every SPD/Central Sterilization Processing Department in every hospital and surgery center should use a UV Flash™ "pass-through window" as a final stage of decontamination. We also believe that a UV Flash™ should be stationed at most nursing stations, patient areas throughout the facility and get used when staff enter and exit a room.

What is an HAI?

Health care-associated infections, or HAIs, are infections that patients receive while in the care of a health care environment, that was neither present nor developing when original treatment began. HAIs can be caused by a number of bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites and are the most common form of preventable hospital complication, affecting millions each year.

How do HAIs affect patients?

The CDC’s health care-associated infection (HAI) prevalence survey provides an updated national estimate of the overall problem of HAIs in U.S. hospitals. Based on a large sample of U.S. acute care hospitals, the survey found that on any given day, about 1 in 31 hospital patients has at least one health care-associated infection.

There were an estimated 687,000 HAIs in U.S. acute care hospitals in 2015. About 72,000 hospital patients with HAIs died during their hospitalizations. More than half of all HAIs occurred outside of the intensive care unit.

How HAIs spread

Young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk for contracting an HAI; however, other risks include long hospital stays, unsanitary conditions and overuse of antibiotics. Washing hands, cleaning all surfaces and sterilizing instruments are the best practices to preventing these infections.

Enhanced disinfection strategies have become a focal point in health care as recent studies have shown that manual cleaning is not enough to stop the spread of pathogens in hospital settings. Not only do hospital-acquired infections affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients each year, but they also cost health care facilities precious dollars.

WHY USE UVC LIGHT TO DISINFECT?

UVC wavelengths are between 200 and 300 nanometers, making them germicidal – meaning they are capable of inactivating microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses and protozoa. This quality makes UVC energy an effective, environmentally-friendly and chemical-free way to prevent microorganisms from replicating in any environment, but especially in hospitals.

HOW DOES UVC DESTROY GERMS?

The high energy from short wavelength UVC light is absorbed in the cellular RNA and DNA, damaging nucleic acids and preventing microorganisms from infecting and reproducing. This absorption of UVC energy forms new bonds between nucleotides, creating double bonds or “dimers.” Dimerization of molecules, particularly thymine, is the most common type of damage incurred by UVC light in microorganisms. Formation of thymine dimers in the DNA of bacteria and viruses prevents replication and ability to infect.

UVC Lighting is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions. UVC refers to ultraviolet light with wavelengths between 200 – 280 nanometers (nm). Light in the UVC wavelength can be used for disinfecting duct work, sterilizing surfaces, destroying harmful micro-organisms in food products and in air.
