Elderhaus

Elderhaus Elderhaus was the first PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) in North Carolina.

Elderhaus PACE is a complete health care program that offers a more personal way of getting health care. PACE is based upon the successful long-term care model in San Francisco known as On Lok. This program was developed as a special health plan for senior citizens. Older people often have medical problems that last for long periods of time. This health plan will arrange for doctors, nurses or oth

er specially trained people to help with these problems. It gives Elderhaus PACE participants a place to go to receive care. Elderhaus PACE includes Elderhaus at the Lake, an Adult Day Center and Elderhaus at the Canterbury Center.

Our Recreation Department cooked up something special with a fun and flavorful cooking class! Participants made delicious lemon tarts topped with fresh raspberries, starting by spreading a zesty lemon filling into individual graham‑cracker crust mini pies. Next came a fluffy layer of whipped cream, and the grand finale—beautiful, ripe raspberries on top. 🍋🍓 The result? A sweet, refreshing treat that was as fun to make as it was to enjoy!

This week, our time‑honored Annual Egg Drop returned to Elderhaus—and it did not disappoint! 🥚💥

The fun began in the morning as participants carefully designed and wrapped their egg “shuttles,” using boxes, cups, yarn, bubble wrap, and lots of creativity to protect their precious cargo. Each egg was lovingly named, with participants taking great care to choose the perfect name before launch day.

After lunch, Colt—one of our amazing PTs—climbed up to the roof overlooking the courtyard and dropped each carefully crafted package one by one. Some designs even featured makeshift parachutes! 🪂 One egg, wrapped like a baseball and dubbed “Baby Jeter,” was named after the legendary Yankees player. Other fan‑favorite names included Otis, Squish, Johnson, Eggbert the Amazing Easter Egg, Eggactly, and Billy, just to name a few.

Now in its fourth year, this beloved tradition reached a new milestone—19 eggs survived the drop! 🎉 A record for Elderhaus! Participants whose eggs made it safely to the ground were proudly awarded a shiny egg medal, and the smiles truly went on for miles.

We love our silly, joyful traditions that bring laughter, creativity, and a strong sense of family to Elderhaus. 💛🥚

Last week, our RT interns, Rylee and Zoe, brought smiles all around by creating a reward‑based “fishing” game using pool noodles and the cutest stuffed animals.

This recreational activity encouraged movement and gentle exercise, with a delightful surprise waiting at the end. Participants were overjoyed to reel in their prizes—and even more thrilled to take home their new plush friends for a well‑earned hug.

💙 Loneliness can affect health just as much as chronic illness.

For many older adults, feeling isolated can impact both emotional and physical well‑being—but it doesn’t have to be that way.

We were proud to welcome local 7th graders to Elderhaus as part of the Career Learning & Discovery Academy (CLDA)!

Hosting these students gave us the opportunity to showcase the many career paths within senior services and healthcare—and the feedback from teachers, students, and school leadership was truly glowing. Our team worked hard to ensure each station was engaging, organized, and gave students a real look at the variety of roles that make our work possible.

One teacher shared:
“Everything was well organized. Students knew where to go, the space was amazing, and they were able to see so many different jobs!”

With more than 172 CLDA trips happening this year, strong community partnerships like this are what make these experiences so meaningful. Our hope is that spending time at Elderhaus sparks interest and helps at least one student see a future for themselves in this rewarding field.

Their dedication and compassion often happen behind the scenes, yet their impact is felt every single day. We’re so grateful for the hard work and heart they bring to the people we serve.

From all of us, thank you—and Happy Easter! 💐🐣

This week, we kicked off our first ride of the year with 3Wheel Therapy, and what a meaningful way to welcome spring! On a beautiful day at Smith Creek Park, our participants experienced the freedom, adventure, and pure joy that this incredible program makes possible.

Being reunited with Nicole and the 3Wheel Therapy team brought smiles from ear to ear. This partnership is so important because it opens doors to outdoor experiences that may not otherwise be accessible—ensuring everyone has the opportunity to explore, play, and feel included.

A big thank‑you to our amazing team members who helped make the day special:

💙 PTA Tanya and Heather Muncie, RT, for supporting participants on the swing set and teeter‑totter
🥪 Our Dietary Department, for packing a delicious picnic lunch
🚌 Our Transportation Team, for providing smooth and reliable service to and from the park

Days like this remind us how powerful community partnerships can be in creating inclusive, enriching experiences for everyone we serve. We can’t wait for many more rides this season! 🚲🌳✨

The other day, our RT interns and Life Enrichment Coordinator, Gabbi, treated some of our participants to a lunch outing at Mellow Mushroom in Wrightsville Beach. 🍕🌊

The group had a fantastic time filled with laughter, great conversation, and delicious pizza—all while taking in the beautiful beach views. A perfect day for food, friendship, and fresh coastal air!

What is your favorite pizza topping?!
