Elderhaus

Elderhaus Elderhaus was the first PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) in North Carolina.

Elderhaus PACE is a complete health care program that offers a more personal way of getting health care. PACE is based upon the successful long-term care model in San Francisco known as On Lok. This program was developed as a special health plan for senior citizens. Older people often have medical problems that last for long periods of time. This health plan will arrange for doctors, nurses or other specially trained people to help with these problems. It gives Elderhaus PACE participants a place to go to receive care. Elderhaus PACE includes Elderhaus at the Lake, an Adult Day Center and Elderhaus at the Canterbury Center.

Our RT interns, Zoe and Riley, brought National Dr. Seuss Day to life for our participants this year! Dressed as the iconic Thing One and Thing Two, they introduced everyone to some of Dr. Seuss’s most beloved characters before leading a lively ring toss game. The competition was tight, ending in a three‑way tie—but in true Dr. Seuss spirit, the interns decided all three participants deserved to be winners! 🎉

The National PACE Association has announced the opening of the 200th PACE program nationwide—an incredible achievement for a model that helps more than 100,000 seniors live safely at home with wraparound support.

Here in North Carolina, Elderhaus was the first PACE program in the state and remains the only PACE program serving Wilmington. We're proud to be part of a movement that keeps older adults independent, connected, and thriving in their communities.

Here’s to continued growth, impact, and the future of aging with dignity. 💙

🖤 Honoring Black History Month Through Local History

Earlier this month, our participants took part in a meaningful educational program focused on our region’s history with slavery in recognition of Black History Month.

We were honored to welcome Heather and Jan from the , who shared powerful insights about events from the 1800s and the experiences of enslaved people in our local area. They also brought original historical documents from the museum, giving our participants a rare opportunity to see authentic materials from that period.

The presentation sparked thoughtful discussion, and our participants asked many engaging questions as they connected more deeply with this important chapter of our history.

A heartfelt thank you to Heather and Jan for bringing this impactful learning experience to Elderhaus.

Our dietician Jen, speech therapist Jill, and the RT team teamed up to bring our participants a meaningful cultural experience centered on the beautiful country of Liberia.

To begin, Heather Muncie shared an engaging overview of Liberia’s rich heritage—its welcoming people, its globally exported goods, and its stunning natural landscapes. From white sand beaches to exhilarating waterfalls and lush rainforests, participants enjoyed a virtual journey through this vibrant West African nation.

Next, everyone worked together to make Liberian Ginger Beer, a traditional non‑alcoholic beverage made with fresh ginger root, lime juice, sugar, and water. As we prepared the recipe, Heather also taught about ginger’s health benefits, including its anti‑inflammatory properties and support for healthy digestion.

Then came the taste test! Reactions ranged from “delicious!” to “needs more sweetness,” but one thing was unanimous—we all walked away with new knowledge and appreciation for this incredible part of the world.

What a wonderful way to learn, taste, and explore together! 🌟

Last week, we celebrated one of our favorite long‑standing traditions at Elderhaus — crowning our Valentine’s Queen, King, Prince, and Princess!

Participants and staff cast their votes, and our newly crowned royal court was delighted and surprised as they received their titles. The smiles were priceless!

Keeping with tradition, each winner got to choose a special song for everyone to sing and dance to. And the highlight of the day? A staff‑and‑participant karaoke moment that brought the house down with “Lean on Me”! 🎤💕

It was a joyful celebration filled with music, laughter, and community — everything we love about Elderhaus.

Our final Winter Senior Games was a snowball throw.

Our participants competed by throwing a “snowball” to see who's landed the furthest away. Our RT interns, Rylee and Zoe were the line judges, and they marked where every snowball landed. In the end, the first, second and third place contestants won their medals.

Last week, we added another exciting event to our lineup—tabletop curling!

Our participants got to experience the strategy and excitement of curling using a mini, no‑ice version perfect for indoor play. It was a hit! Lots of laughs, friendly competition, and some impressive skills on display.

We wrapped up the event by awarding gold, silver, and bronze medals, and our winners celebrated by posing, smiling, and proudly “biting” their medals for the camera!

What a fun way to bring the competitive spirit to our community! ❤️🏅

We had the best time making adorable snowman lights using ping‑pong balls and tiny electric tea lights! ⛄✨

We started by creating a small opening in the bottom of each ping‑pong ball, then popped the “wick” of the tea light inside to form the snowman’s glowing little face. After that, participants picked out the cutest mini knit hats and scarves to dress up their creations.

With help from our staff, everyone added their own personality to each snowman—drawing eyes, smiles, and of course, a little carrot nose using Sharpies. When the lights were switched on, the snowmen came to life and lit up the room (and a lot of smiles!).

It was such a sweet, creative project, and we all loved making them together! 💛❄️✨
