Elderhaus

Elderhaus Elderhaus was the first PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) in North Carolina.

Elderhaus PACE is a complete health care program that offers a more personal way of getting health care. PACE is based upon the successful long-term care model in San Francisco known as On Lok. This program was developed as a special health plan for senior citizens. Older people often have medical problems that last for long periods of time. This health plan will arrange for doctors, nurses or oth

er specially trained people to help with these problems. It gives Elderhaus PACE participants a place to go to receive care. Elderhaus PACE includes Elderhaus at the Lake, an Adult Day Center and Elderhaus at the Canterbury Center.

Social workers champion the dignity and independence of residents and participants by connecting them to resources, advocating for their rights, and encouraging active participation in community life. Whether it’s helping someone access financial assistance, plan for future needs, or simply pursue hobbies and passions, social workers empower seniors to lead lives of fulfillment and purpose. We're grateful to all those on our team!

Yesterday, we welcomed back our friends at 3Wheel Therapy, and it was a beautiful day to ride! For this excursion, we had a bunch of first-time riders, and not only did they love the experience, but they can’t wait to get on the therapy trike again! This program brings pure joy to our participants and staff, and the 3Wheel Therapy team has become like family to us. We can't wait for the next time they visit!

Wacky Professor Abby Normal recently made a return visit, and she blinded us with science! While she talked about how we're on the verge of spring, she began to create a snowstorm in a jar! She needed help with her experiment, so the participants stepped up to pour some water in the jar, add a teaspoon of white craft paint, fill the remainder of the jar with baby oil, and drop in broken tablets of Alka-Seltzer. What happened next was a weather emergency – a blizzard in a jar! So, Professor Abby Normal explained how the molecules in the solution are both molar and non-polar and how the “ingredients” create a reaction of sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, and hydrogen oxide to create carbon dioxide gas. The participants clapped and cheered to see the last snowstorm of winter 2025!

A great benefit of PACE programs is that we're able to foster the many interests of our participants. Gabbi, our life enrichment coordinator, especially loves supporting participants' artistic talents, both in groups and individually. One of our participants loves to paint and often shares his works throughout the organization. Here, he's gifting Harriet Forney, our director of quality and compliance, with a beautiful painting to hang in her office. She was surprised and overjoyed at the fantastic work and at having a beautiful piece of original art to display!

Last week, just in time for St. Patrick's Day, Gabbi, our life enrichment coordinator, and Heather, our recreation therapist, gathered the participants to make a jolly leprechaun for their homes. The participants had a lot of freedom in assembling all the elements and added their own character by placing the hat, mustache, beard, etc. just so. In the end, the cute tabletop decorations were a lot of fun to put together, and we even gave them silly names to make them extra special!

In honor of Pi Day (March 14, or 3.14, which begins the numerical sequence of pi), Shannon and Lauren, our recreation therapy interns, assisted our participants in making hand pies! This quick, delicious activity had the participants stuffing puff pastry with their choice of fruit filling and then using a fork to crimp the edges closed. After the pies were baked, Shannon and Lauren served them warm with powdered sugar on top. They were a big hit!

Last week, the recreation therapy department shared a new game with the participants: Human Slot Machine! To play, participants pushed a button that made a funny sound while Gabbi, Shannon, and Heather rolled their arms like the dials on a slot machine. Next, the participants hit another funny sounding button that served as a cue to stop the spinning wheels. Then, Gabbi, Shannon, and Heather spontaneously held up an object, such as a plastic hamburger, a yellow duck, or a plush pineapple. If all three women held up the same object, the participant won the game! At the end of the session, we had three identical matches, not to mention a ton of laughter and smiles!

It's time to announce March's employee of the month: Kellie Williams! Kellie is a personal care aide and driver for Elderhaus at the Lake, our adult day center. She has been with the organization since August of 2024. Kellie's nominator shared that, "Kellie embodies our mission. She is kind, compassionate, and gives her all to work. She is the friendly face our participants see in the morning, and she keeps our participants happy all day! She is amazing and makes the EHAL team great!" Congratulations, Kellie, on your hard work and fantastic attitude!

Our recreation therapy intern, Shannon, hosted her very own cooking class to guide our participants in making Irish soda bread. The recipe she used is one that originated with her great-grandmother and has been handed down in her family. The participants worked together to mix flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, raisins, milk, butter, and eggs. After the bread was baked, it was served warm to the participants while they played Bingo. To emphasize the theme, Shannon dressed up as a leprechaun and played traditional Irish music!

This month, we gave our bowling activity a St. Patrick’s Day twist when Lauren and Shannon, our recreation therapy interns, decorated the pins with gold coins! Five participants bowled a strike, leading to a “bowl off” for the top three places. In the end, our winner threw another strike and was happy to see that, in addition to the usual prize, he won a giant leprechaun hat! While we bowled, we listened to music, and our recently crowned Queen of Hearts had a great time teaching another participant some great dance moves! 🍀

This week, our participants had a great time expressing themselves through art! Gabbi, our life enrichment coordinator, led the group as they referenced an image of conversation hearts to spark their own artistic approach. The participants let their skills come to the forefront as they made color and composition choices to create beautiful works on canvas. They were all proud of their art, and the smiles show it!

This week, one of our participants turned 103 years young, so we had a party! Smiling contentedly, she enjoyed her special day with cake, lots of well-wishes, and surrounded by family and friends. We had a great time singing to her and honoring her for a life well lived. When asked her secret for making it to 103, she credited her long life to drinking black coffee daily since a very young age. Take note, everyone! ☕

Today is , and we're recognizing and honoring caregivers and the exceptional work that they do, whether as professionals, family members, friends, or neighbors. Caregivers ensure the health, dignity, and quality of life of the people they serve while also helping reduce the burden on healthcare systems, providing emotional stability to families, and ensuring continuity of care.

If you’d like to watch the award-winning UNSEEN documentary, which raises awareness of caregiving issues (in this instance for parents of disabled children) and seeks to increase support for caregivers, you can view it for free from February 20-23 by clicking https://caregiverdoc.com/2025-national-caregivers-day-screening/.

Sometimes, little pick-me-ups make all the difference! The recreation therapy team recently guided the participants in making drawer sachets. First, each person chose two hearts made of pink, red, or white felt, along with the color of ribbon needed to weave the hearts together. They also tinged fiber fill with aromatherapy oils before stuffing it between the hearts. Finally, the participants finished the weaving and created a bow at the top. They were so happy with their scented drawer sachets and were excited to take them home and put them to use! As we often do when we work, we sang along to classic love songs, and you could feel the LOVE at play!
