The Greater Wilmington Business Journal’s annual Health Care Heroes Awards recently took place on November 15th. The program honors individuals and organizations who make a lasting impact on the quality of health care in our region.

We are beyond proud to celebrate 2 of our leaders who were recognized at this event. Nick Green, clinic administrator for the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinics won this year’s Community Achievement Award. Terry McDowell, senior director of primary care for the Novant Health Coastal Region was a finalist for the Healthcare Executive Award.

Nick’s nominator writes: “He takes the time to help patients overcome their barriers to care, whether it be helping them complete financial applications or connecting them with services. He often spends his free time volunteering in the community he serves and inspires his team to do the same.”

Terry’s nominator shares: “When he moved to Wilmington over 15 years ago, Terry became the administrator of NHRMC EMS, where he continued to excel and grew the NHRMC EMS program to what it is today. Terry’s former EMS employees still love him to this day. In 2017, our primary care group hired Terry as our administrator. …All of our doctors – and patients, for that matter – love Terry and would follow him into any situation ... not just because we trust him 100%, but also because we are confident in his judgment. Terry is retiring in March of 2026. He is not replaceable.”

Her nominator writes:
I would like to nominate Maria for consistently demonstrating the values of SPARK — creating a safe environment, personifying a passion for service, anticipating needs, remaining reliable, and kindling positive experiences. After hearing me discuss opportunities for improvement in our huddles and team meetings, Maria immediately took initiative. She recognized that our Spanish-speaking population needed someone they could connect with, so she took it upon herself to become a certified interpreter. A true example of anticipating patient needs and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all. Maria also takes feedback from team discussions and turns it into action. She regularly brings new ideas to me on how we can improve patient care and team collaboration, such as opening scheduling to increase access and helping the team understand how their personalities play a big part in serving patients and supporting one another’s strengths. Each month, Maria presents new topics to the team focused on teamwork, communication, and creating the best experience for both patients and staff. Her consistency, creativity, and drive to support others truly reflect what it means to serve with purpose as it shows through the month-to-month improvements of our scores. Maria not only embodies our values, she inspires others to live them every day.

🩻 Happy Rad Tech Week to all of our radiology teammates! 🩻

Rad Tech Week is an annual opportunity to recognize and honor the vital work of medical imaging and radiologic technologists in health care safety. From X-rays and MRIs to CT scans and ultrasounds, these dedicated professionals play an essential role in patient diagnosis, treatment, and care.

Fun fact: We celebrate rad tech week during the week of November 8th to mark the anniversary of Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen’s discovery of the x-ray on November 8, 1895.

We celebrate all those who have carried on Mr. Roentgen’s amazing discovery, which has allowed for the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of fractures, tumors, blockages, and a host of other abnormalities within the body.

Novant Health – New Hanover Primary Care is excited to announce that Lara Jaussi, D.O. has joined us at our Scotts Hill location!

An avid Philadelphia sports fan, Dr. Jaussi grew up just outside of Philadelphia, completing medical school outside of Pittsburgh and her residency training in Williamsport, PA. She practiced in rural Pennsylvania for the last 7 years, having the opportunity to be both the medical director and primary attending physician for a nursing home, while also practicing outpatient family medicine.

Dr. Jaussi enjoys caring for patients of all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics, and is excited to watch her youngest patient population grow into healthy adults! For her adult population, many will be pleased to learn that she is skilled in joint injections, dermatologic procedures (such as lesion removal and biopsies) and gynecological procedures (such as endometrial biopsies, Nexplanon, and IUD insertion).

As a busy mom of three, Dr. Jaussi is happy that she and her husband now have the opportunity to raise their young family a little further south and can enjoy quality time together. As for herself, she is looking forward to enjoying her personal passions of baking, reading, exercising, and crafting!

Novant Health is thrilled to welcome Jasmin Carey, FNP to our Michael Jordan Family Medicine Clinic – East Wilmington location.

Jasmin joins us from UNC-Chapel Hill where she earned her MSN, by way of Duke University and the University of Florida, where she earned her ABSN and B.S. in Health Education & Behavior, respectively.

As a provider who treats patients of all ages, she is especially interested in prevention and wellness, holistic and integrative care, as well as epidemiology. With her passion for helping her patients live their life to the fullest, it comes as no surprise that she herself enjoys yoga, nature, warm tea, a good book, and traveling. When you see her, don’t be surprised if she also has some thoughts about a recent documentary or cooking show she’s enjoyed! Novant Health- New Hanover Primary Care welcomes Dr. Jonathan Melo to our Myrtle Grove location!

Although he claims North Carolina as his home, Dr. Melo actually grew up in the Dominican Republic and speaks both English and Spanish! He went to medical school at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine, completing his residency here with the Novant Health Family Medicine Wilmington Residency Program.

As an Osteopathic Physician, he specializes in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment which focuses on hands-on techniques to treat common pains and ailments. He is also skilled in performing joint injections, IUD placements & removals, as well as Nexplanon placements & removals. As a Family Medicine practitioner Dr. Melo treats patients of all ages, from newborn through adulthood, making it very convenient for your entire family to see him.

When he is not taking care of generations of families, Dr. Melo spends time with his own family (Disney trips are a favorite), traveling, playing golf, and going to the beach.

☀️ Feel Good Friday – Congratulations to our newest Sunshine Award Winner: Yolander! ☀️

Her nominator writes: “Recently, Yolander was checking in a patient at the radiology desk and noticed that the patient was uneasy, with a sad expression on their face. After the patient was seated in the waiting area, they re-approached Yolander’s desk, asking if [the imaging] would show cancer. Yolander let the patient know that she would not be able to determine that information and advised the patient to speak with their P*P for clinical questions and diagnosis. The patient replied that they hoped the imaging did show cancer, that the team gave them the worst news possible, as they did not want to live any longer, and began to cry. Yolander quickly sprang into action, encouraging the patient with positive words and her friendly demeanor. Yolander also immediately notified her supervisor with concerns about the patient’s safety. The on-site clinic administrator and clinical supervisor promptly engaged with the patient, and in conjunction with the provider this team was able to assist the patient in obtaining appropriate psychiatric and psychological care, as well as housing and food resources, and a referral for dentures. From a life of torment, to sensing that Yolander was a person this patient could trust to reach out to, we are forever humbled.

Yolander, we are SO INCREDIBLY honored to have you on our team. Though you are a positive ray of sunshine every day, you truly saved a life that day. Thank you for embodying what it means to listen and engage with our patients, we never know the weight of what they are carrying with them.
