At the core of Chinese medical theory is the theory of the Internal Organs. This theory represents the view of the body as an integrated whole. Western medicine sees each organ in its anatomical and physiological aspects (body=machine) where Chinese medicine views each organ as a complex energetic system taking into consideration not only its anatomical and physiological aspects, but also its mental, emotional and spiritual aspects (body=garden).

Let’s review the Kidneys. In Chinese medicine, the Kidneys are the foundation for all the Yin and Yang energies of the body. They’re referred to as the “Root of Life” because they store the Essence (which can be loosely translated to DNA and genes in Western medicine combined with the immaterial/Soul and physical being). In its pre-Heaven form, the Essence is derived from the parents, established at the moment of conception and determines our basic constitution, strength and vitality. It’s what nourishes the fetus and after birth controls growth and development. (Which is why the state of our health and wellness while trying to conceive is SO important.) The Kidneys also store the post-Heaven Essence which is extracted from food through the transformation of the Kidneys and other organs. A reminder that food is medicine and at the root of optimal health and disease prevention.

In East Asian medicine, the Kidneys’ functions and some of the pathologies are as follows (continued in comments).

On this love day (or Hallmark day, depending on who you ask 🤷🏻‍♀️), a reminder to love yourself. “Love yourself. Be clear on how you want to be treated. Know your worth. Always.”

Heart 7, Shén Mén, Spirit Gate, is located on the wrist crease in the depression on the radial side of the tendon. Find the space between your pinky and ring finger and follow it down. Massage this point if feeling intense emotions or feeling anxious, stressed, restless or heartbroken. Also helpful for palpitations and insomnia. Sending all the love to you! 💖

The masseter muscle is one of the strongest muscles in the body and just one of over 40 muscles in the face! Acupuncture, facial cupping and gua sha release tight fascia and muscle fibers to alleviate pain, reduce tension, and restore muscle tone and symmetry. Great for TMJ disorders and clenching (who isn’t constantly clenching these days?) and just one of the ways facial acupuncture treatments can help you relax and feel better from the inside out. All facial acupuncture treatments include facial and body points followed by tuning forks (a massage for your nervous system!), facial cupping and facial gua sha. Facial cupping & gua sha are also offered as stand-alone treatments. Available Mondays & Wednesdays. Link in bio to book an appointment 💫

Whew, y’all, 2022 came in like a wrecking ball! The first week felt like a whole year, and I still think 2020 was yesterday! 🤯 Resolutions are fun, but routines are where the magic stays consistent.✨Here are some healthy routines that keep me feeling supported 🤗 and 💪🏼. What are some of your routines?
🥦 Consuming nutrient-dense foods and eating regularly help stabilize my mental, emotional and physical well-being. Food is medicine! And “dead” foods (think highly processed, fast food and food without nutrients) can cause anxiety & depression among other inflammatory and immune-suppressing conditions.
🧬 Supplementing with zinc, vitamin C, quercetin, magnesium, vitamins D & K and B-complex got me feeling I can take on the 🌎 while supporting my immune system and stress response
🥊 Moving my body whether that be going for walks, lunging around at home or boxing
🛁 All the self-care things like epsom salt baths, facial gua sha, regular chiropractic care and acupuncture, reading for fun and REST
♠️ Playing all the games, I love games, I go so hard at cribbage. Playtime is important and exercises your creativity and mind. 🧠
🧸Journaling, meditation and therapy because we are living in intense times and I need alllll the support I can get
🍵 Drinking hot herbal tea on the reg: chai, chamomile, ginger and green on heavy rotation
🍫Chocolate bc chocolate! The darker, the better IMHO (and healthier for you). Image via

NEEDLEJUICE Say it three times and an acupuncturist may appear at your door.🤷🏻‍♀️But really, what happens when a needle is inserted?
⚡️Broadly speaking, acupuncture increases circulation of qi, blood and nutrients throughout the body while balancing yin and yang energies. In more “Western” terms, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to produce physiological responses locally at the site of needle insertion as well as systemically through the spinal cord and brain. Let’s break this down a bit:
⚡️As the needle enters the skin and muscle layers, the brain registers tissue damage, bringing blood and tissue repair factors to the needle site. At the same time, endorphins and enkephalins, the body’s natural opiate-like chemicals that reduce pain, relieve stress and give you the “acupuncture high” some of us get after treatment, are released in response to the needles.
⚡️Acupuncture releases muscle tension by releasing trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points are well-documented tender areas and nodules that refer pain into muscles and overlying fascia, that when stimulated, release tension and pain. The term “trigger point” was coined in the 1950s by physicians Travell and Rinzler. However, in the 70s, physicians began to realize these trigger points coincided with acupuncture points.
⚡️Acupuncture stimulation affects connective tissue. Connective tissue connects skin to muscle, surrounds internal organs, bones, tendons and ligaments. It’s everywhere! It has been found that it has its own chemical signaling and stimulating an acupuncture point affects areas, organs and physiological systems distant from the original point.
⚡️Acupuncture reduces stress by reducing cortisol, a stress hormone and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and digest” aspect of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) which tells the body to stop using up resources and nourish areas that need attention. (Continued in comments)
