At the core of Chinese medical theory is the theory of the Internal Organs. This theory represents the view of the body as an integrated whole. Western medicine sees each organ in its anatomical and physiological aspects (body=machine) where Chinese medicine views each organ as a complex energetic system taking into consideration not only its anatomical and physiological aspects, but also its mental, emotional and spiritual aspects (body=garden).

Let’s review the Kidneys. In Chinese medicine, the Kidneys are the foundation for all the Yin and Yang energies of the body. They’re referred to as the “Root of Life” because they store the Essence (which can be loosely translated to DNA and genes in Western medicine combined with the immaterial/Soul and physical being). In its pre-Heaven form, the Essence is derived from the parents, established at the moment of conception and determines our basic constitution, strength and vitality. It’s what nourishes the fetus and after birth controls growth and development. (Which is why the state of our health and wellness while trying to conceive is SO important.) The Kidneys also store the post-Heaven Essence which is extracted from food through the transformation of the Kidneys and other organs. A reminder that food is medicine and at the root of optimal health and disease prevention.

In East Asian medicine, the Kidneys’ functions and some of the pathologies are as follows (continued in comments).

On this love day (or Hallmark day, depending on who you ask 🤷🏻‍♀️), a reminder to love yourself. “Love yourself. Be clear on how you want to be treated. Know your worth. Always.”

Heart 7, Shén Mén, Spirit Gate, is located on the wrist crease in the depression on the radial side of the tendon. Find the space between your pinky and ring finger and follow it down. Massage this point if feeling intense emotions or feeling anxious, stressed, restless or heartbroken. Also helpful for palpitations and insomnia. Sending all the love to you! 💖

The masseter muscle is one of the strongest muscles in the body and just one of over 40 muscles in the face! Acupuncture, facial cupping and gua sha release tight fascia and muscle fibers to alleviate pain, reduce tension, and restore muscle tone and symmetry. Great for TMJ disorders and clenching (who isn’t constantly clenching these days?) and just one of the ways facial acupuncture treatments can help you relax and feel better from the inside out. All facial acupuncture treatments include facial and body points followed by tuning forks (a massage for your nervous system!), facial cupping and facial gua sha. Facial cupping & gua sha are also offered as stand-alone treatments. Available Mondays & Wednesdays. Link in bio to book an appointment 💫

Whew, y’all, 2022 came in like a wrecking ball! The first week felt like a whole year, and I still think 2020 was yesterday! 🤯 Resolutions are fun, but routines are where the magic stays consistent.✨Here are some healthy routines that keep me feeling supported 🤗 and 💪🏼. What are some of your routines?
🥦 Consuming nutrient-dense foods and eating regularly help stabilize my mental, emotional and physical well-being. Food is medicine! And “dead” foods (think highly processed, fast food and food without nutrients) can cause anxiety & depression among other inflammatory and immune-suppressing conditions.
🧬 Supplementing with zinc, vitamin C, quercetin, magnesium, vitamins D & K and B-complex got me feeling I can take on the 🌎 while supporting my immune system and stress response
🥊 Moving my body whether that be going for walks, lunging around at home or boxing
🛁 All the self-care things like epsom salt baths, facial gua sha, regular chiropractic care and acupuncture, reading for fun and REST
♠️ Playing all the games, I love games, I go so hard at cribbage. Playtime is important and exercises your creativity and mind. 🧠
🧸Journaling, meditation and therapy because we are living in intense times and I need alllll the support I can get
🍵 Drinking hot herbal tea on the reg: chai, chamomile, ginger and green on heavy rotation
🍫Chocolate bc chocolate! The darker, the better IMHO (and healthier for you). Image via

NEEDLEJUICE Say it three times and an acupuncturist may appear at your door.🤷🏻‍♀️But really, what happens when a needle is inserted?
⚡️Broadly speaking, acupuncture increases circulation of qi, blood and nutrients throughout the body while balancing yin and yang energies. In more “Western” terms, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to produce physiological responses locally at the site of needle insertion as well as systemically through the spinal cord and brain. Let’s break this down a bit:
⚡️As the needle enters the skin and muscle layers, the brain registers tissue damage, bringing blood and tissue repair factors to the needle site. At the same time, endorphins and enkephalins, the body’s natural opiate-like chemicals that reduce pain, relieve stress and give you the “acupuncture high” some of us get after treatment, are released in response to the needles.
⚡️Acupuncture releases muscle tension by releasing trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points are well-documented tender areas and nodules that refer pain into muscles and overlying fascia, that when stimulated, release tension and pain. The term “trigger point” was coined in the 1950s by physicians Travell and Rinzler. However, in the 70s, physicians began to realize these trigger points coincided with acupuncture points.
⚡️Acupuncture stimulation affects connective tissue. Connective tissue connects skin to muscle, surrounds internal organs, bones, tendons and ligaments. It’s everywhere! It has been found that it has its own chemical signaling and stimulating an acupuncture point affects areas, organs and physiological systems distant from the original point.
⚡️Acupuncture reduces stress by reducing cortisol, a stress hormone and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and digest” aspect of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) which tells the body to stop using up resources and nourish areas that need attention. (Continued in comments)

Yin and yang but make it 💀. We are officially in the season of autumn, a yin season, as we feel the climate and energy shift from summer, which is the ultimate yang season. Read along for some practices and tips as we enter spooky season and adjust to the energetic changes. Because it’s important to live in accordance with the seasons.💨🌾 🍃🍂🍁 “In the three months of autumn all things in nature reach their full maturity. The grains ripen and harvesting occurs. The heavenly energy cools, as does the weather. The wind begins to stir. This is the changing or pivoting point when the yang, or active, phase turns into its opposite, the yin, or passive, phase. One should retire with the sunset and arise with the dawn. Just as the weather in autumn turns harsh, so does the emotional climate. It is therefore important to remain calm and peaceful, refraining from depression so that one can make the transition to winter smoothly. This is the time to gather one’s spirit and energy, be more focused, and not allow desires to run wild. One must keep the lung energy full, clean, and quiet. This means practicing breathing exercises to enhance lung qi. Also, one should refrain from both smoking and grief, the emotion of the lung. This will prevent kidney or digestive problems in the winter.” Taken from the Huang Di Nei Jing, the classic authoritative medical Chinese text. Seasonal changes are always a great time to get an acupuncture tune-up treatment to help balance out the changing energies. How are you adjusting to the climatic and energetic shifts? 👻💀🎃🧙‍♀️🧟‍♀️🕷

LOVE YOUR BREASTS. When I was 20, I discovered a lump in my breast during a self-exam. After a needle biopsy, it was diagnosed as benign. I have no family history of breast cancer, but I learned I have a family history of fibrocystic breasts. According to the Mayo Clinic, more than half of women experience fibrocystic breast changes at some point in their lives.

Chinese medicine diagnoses different types of breast lumps based on signs and symptoms. For example, Ru Pi corresponds to a benign lump such as those found in fibroadenoma or cysts. These lumps are painless and mobile and the breast does not feel hot or cold to the touch, the skin color is unchanged and the size varies according to the mood of the woman (hello PMS!).

In honor of breast cancer awareness month (let’s be real, we should be aware of our breasts every month), here are some preventative measures and ways to love your breasts. *Please note, palpation is essential, but does not replace the diagnosis of an expert gynecologist. Schedule an appointment with your gynecologist if you notice anything unusual.

🌸fly be free: wearing a bra can keep the lymph circulation from draining out of the breast region, ditch the bra when you get home (or ditch it altogether!)
🌸massage your breasts: the body’s lymphatic system is highly concentrated in the underarm and breast region, castor oil used topically is especially helpful at softening breast nodules and improving lymph circulation
🌸deal with emotions: strong emotions, especially worry, anger, sadness and frustration, can cause stagnation. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, talk therapy, movement therapy, meditation and clean diet all can help with strong emotions
🌸get acupuncture! Acupuncture promotes blood flow. Everything the body needs to heal is in the blood, including oxygen, nutrients absorbed from food, hormones, analgesics and anti-inflammatories. Blood flow diminished by as little as 3% in the breast area may cause cancer to develop.
🌸eat well: eat whole, nutritious foods and avoid packaged and processed foods
🌸mark your calendar: massage regularly, but check for lumps a few days after after your period each month.

Left: morning face post-debaucherous night 🍻🍕Right-post-acupuncture, facial cupping and guasha ✨🥰 You can see a drastic difference in fluid retention and puffiness…even my nose looks thinner! Facial acupuncture, cupping and guasha increase circulation of oxygen-rich blood, qi and fluids to the skin and musculature. This stimulation to the tissues helps to produce collagen and elastin helping to repair slackening skin for a more toned, healthful glow. These treatments also help to smoothe fine lines, relax tight facial muscles (great for TMJ and jaw tension), and drain stagnant lymph to remove toxins and decrease puffiness. Perfect for a post-night out pick-me-up. Facial acupuncture treatments include acupuncture, tuning forks, facial cupping and guasha. Stand-alone facial cupping & guasha services offered as well. One week left to get $5 off your initial facial acupuncture treatment and a serum sample! Refer a friend and get $20 off your next facial acupuncture treatment. Props to the younger generation, especially this guy who is celebrating his 21st this weekend who, months ago, sought out acupuncture. He has taken ownership of his health and has made some important dietary and lifestyle changes and is seeing and feeling the benefits of such. These habits will continue to help him as he ages and encounters life in all its beautiful and challenging ways. Also, he doesn’t have social media (extra points in my book). Acupuncture and East Asian medicine is great for people of all ages (and is especially great preventative medicine!). Take ownership of your health and feel and live better! As always, photo shared with permission.

Taking this energy with me through the weekend on this Venus (square Saturn 🥵) day! I met a Cher-look-alike bombshell this week who inspired me and reminded me inadvertently that I am a rich *woman*. Rich in love, experiences, friendships, passion, self-worth, even on days when I feel the opposite. A few things to try and remember when you’re feeling down in the dumps because as much as we may not like to admit, it’s a part of life.
💄repeat positive affirmations like “I am a rich (fill in appropriate gender identity)”
💄get acupuncture-I mean, had to...acupuncture releases serotonin and dopamine and other endorphins and can help during times of transition and heavy emotions
💄get off-have an or**sm with yourself or a lover, or**sms help you live longer! They reduce stress and anxiety, increase circulation, and can improve autoimmune disease, menstrual cycles and fertility (much like acupuncture 🤓)
💄listen to Stevie Wonder’s “As” (and really all of his songs)-music, as Jamie Wheal puts it, “not only ‘soothes the savage beast’; it shapes our physiology, sense of connectivity, and capacity for awe”...beautiful (le sigh)
💄take a deep breath and exhale longer than you inhale, repeat several times-longer exhales improve vagal tone thereby decreasing heart rate, reducing stress hormones and calming the mind and body
💄take a walk outside (even better barefooted)-”grounding” or “earthing” connects you with Earth’s electrons which research has shown improves sleep and reduces pain among other physiological changes
💄move your body-dance, exercise, stretch to release endorphins, improve circulation, reduce stress, improve bone density, the list goes on and on

How many of us actually know what is happening hormonally on a monthly basis? Menstrual cycles not only affect and are indicators of our health, our mood, and our quality of life, but for menstruating people, they last for an average of 35-40 years….that’s a long a** time! In this post, I discuss what the menstrual cycle is, the hormonal fluctuations that should occur in a cycle and the exact timeframe that you are fertile, if you are a menstruating person not under the influence of birth control.
🩸
Let’s start with the basics and define the menstrual cycle and its phases. A normal cycle can range from 25-36 days. A cycle is the number of days when you start bleeding from one month to the next. There are four phases (I include me**es here as a phase which falls under the follicular phase): me**es, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase. Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture and herbs, helps regulate hormones thereby regulating the menstrual cycle. Acupuncture increases blood flow to the reproductive organs, helps improve egg quality and follicle count and reduces stress hormones. All major factors for improving fertility and inversely, helping you track your cycle so you know when you are most fertile to prevent pregnancy.
🩸
MENSES-Day 1 of your cycle defined by the first day of bright red bleeding (this does not include discharge that you may notice before your period).
🩸
FOLLICULAR PHASE Cycle Days (CDs) 1-17 Shedding of uterine lining-me**es, growth of follicles & thickening of lining once again. Estrogen key hormone here.
🩸
OVULATION mid-cycle, can be between CD 10 and CD 20.
The dominant follicle secretes estrogen which triggers the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) which stimulates your ovaries to release an egg. **The fertility window begins approximately 3–5 days (number of days s***m can live in the uterus) before ovulation and continues 1–2 days (lifespan of the egg) after ovulation.**
🩸
LUTEAL PHASE typically 12-14 days long-Body prepares for implantation/uterine lining thickening to create cozy home for the fertilized egg. Progesterone key hormone here.

Hear, hear! (sorry, had to 🙄) I’m back this Monday, September 13th, at 6pm & 7pm for auricular acupuncture in the cave! I’ll be needling three points in each👂🏼to help reduce pain, calm the mind and encourage deep and nourishing relaxation. Auricular acupuncture is a diagnostic and treatment system using points on the ear to restore homeostasis, which is the body’s ability to regulate its environment and maintain balance. It has been shown that stimulating specific points on the ear can affect and relieve symptoms of pathologies throughout the body. For more info on auricular acupuncture and the “magic” of ear seeds (hint: it’s not magic), read the newest blog via the link in bio. Hope to see you in the cave!

09/05/2021

Tomorrow is a New Moon in Virgo & for those with natural menstrual cycles, you may notice your cycle syncing up with the new moon. It is believed you are most fertile when you have your period during the new moon because baaaack in the day, you’d be up with the full moon dancing in the sheets.💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻The word “menstruation” is a combination of Latin and Greek words meaning “moon” and “month”. Women’s fertility rhythms and the lunar cycle have long been observed and are said to be based on your greater purpose—or rather, the type of energy & attention you are putting out at this moment. Those who are currently ovulating are red moon goddesses. If you are bleeding with this new moon, you are a white moon goddess. And even if you aren’t synced with the moon (or even experiencing periods...period) you are still a goddess my darling.
🌙 Red moon goddesses ovulate during the new moon & get their periods on the full moon. If you’ve got red moon goddess vibes, you tend to be a mover and a shaker! Here to do powerful work, red moon goddesses are typically healers, priestesses, doctors, nurses, CEOs, activists, artists, and the like.
🌙 White moon goddesses bleed with the new moon & ovulate during the full moon. Most naturally following the cycles of the earth, you tend to withdraw and rest during the darkest night of the moon cycle. White moon goddesses are considered the nurturers. Whether you are desiring children or dreaming up big ideas, you are focused on manifesting creation in your life right now.
🌙 Personally, I’m obsessed with the Moon AND menstrual cycles, as our cycles tell us so much information about our health in general. Getting in tune with our own bodies by spending time in nature, regulating sleep cycles, eating healthy and limiting toxins can be very helpful for regulating the menstrual cycle, improving fertility, if that is your goal, and reducing hormonal imbalances. More to come this week on what TF actually happens hormonally during a cycle because did s*x ed teach us anything? AND ALSO, knowledge is power bbs especially in this day and age.✨Photo by .kerrigan via

CUP THE PAIN AWAY! Probably what Peaches meant 😇 Cupping is an East Asian practice that uses cups, ranging from glass to plastic to silicone, that are applied to the skin in order to break up knots and adhesions, clear metabolic waste from injured muscles, eliminate toxins and accelerate healing. The application works by reducing pressure in the cup, historically with the use of fire, AKA 🔥cupping, which causes a gentle pulling of the skin, muscle and fascia layers into the cup in order to increase the flow of blood, lymph and vital nutrients to the underlying area. Cupping marks vary in color 🔴🟣⚫️ depending on the accumulation of toxins typically from old injuries and damaged tissue that have resulted in poor circulation. And no, they’re not bruises! The darker the mark, the more healing is indicated. Swipe to see ’s masterpiece. *photos shared with permission* Interested in cupping treatment? Link in bio to book a session.

Acupuncture helps you age like Angela Bassett! 👑👑👑 Here is what to expect during a cosmetic acupuncture treatment. 06/19/2021

Tomorrow, we celebrate the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the longest day of the year, the ultimate Yang season (and my favorite season...♋️ season...🦀☀️💥🔥). Here are some summer tips as we adjust to the energetic changes of this season. Taken from the Huang Di Nei Jing, the classic authoritative medical Chinese text: “In the three months of summer there is an abundance of sunshine and rain. The heavenly energy descends, and the earthly energy rises. When these energies merge there is in*******se between heaven and earth. As a result plants mature and animals, flowers, and fruit appear abundantly. One may retire somewhat later at this time of year, while still arising early. One should refrain from anger and stay physically active, to prevent the pores from closing and the qi from stagnating. One should not overindulge in s*x, although one can indulge a bit more than in other seasons. Emotionally, it is important to be happy and easygoing and not hold grudges, so that the energy can flow freely and communicate between the external and the internal. In this way illness may be averted in the fall. The season of fire and heart also encompasses late summer, which corresponds to the earth element. Problems in the summer will cause injury to the heart and will manifest in the autumn.” (Maoshing Ni translation) 🌺🌹🌷💐🌸🌼🌻 A reminder to live more closely in accordance with the seasons, and a great time for an acupuncture seasonal tune-up.
