[03/19/20]   Can we have a quick chat?

I know things are getting a bit wild, with kids home from school, work schedules getting crazy, and so on. I hope that you are remaining calm, as best you can. As of now, I am figuring out how to stay open during this outbreak in a sensible way. As of right now, patient visits continue but are being spaced out in order to have more time to clean between patients. If the Wellness Group office is asked to close, we will. Each practitioner will reach out to their patients as appropriate.

For the time being, I am waiving the 24-hour cancellation policy. Please reach out as early as possible with schedule changes.

If you have any symptoms or are immunocompromised please cancel your appointments.

Lastly, I am a small business owner, and I understand the financial worry. If you have been laid off, are losing money or have a financial issue due to the coronavirus and need treatment, please reach out. I will do my best to work out something so you can get the care you need.

Even if all you need to do is vent a bit, reach out. I'm very serious, because we all need to help each other get through this.

There is a quote from the acupuncture classics that some of my teachers made sure we heard: “Acupuncture is an expression of humanity.” At this point in time, that timeless truth is essential, and we need to cherish our shared humanity.

Eat right, stay hydrated, and get a bit of exercise. Be safe, and wash your hands!

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) - Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection Recommendations

Thoughts on Covid-19 for all patients, friends and passers-by:
Without going too far down the rabbit hole of hysteria, this pandemic is real. It will likely touch all of us in one way or another, so the best course of action is to prepare early, keep calm and wash your hands!
So, what does that mean in real life? I'm not an epidemiologist (obviously), but it means that we all have to take steps to try to flatten the curve and minimize the load on the healthcare system. Here are some things to consider:
1) Take care of yourself and your family, healthwise. Make sure you are all hydrating, eating nutritious foods and getting sufficient rest. If things like acupuncture and massage are available -- and if you are healthy -- try to take advantage. These things help keep your immune system functioning optimally.
2) HYDRATE. Enough said?
3) Exercise, take walks (by yourself, or with YOUR family... NOT group excursions, please), get out in the fresh air and sunshine as much as you are able. In your yard, on your patio, on your balcony or deck. It's all good.
4) Meditate. Lowers stress, improves immune function
5) Laugh and do things that bring you joy. Lowers stress, improves immune function and if we HAVE to be cooped up for 14 days or more, we should at least have some fun, right?
6) Clean, sanitize, disinfect. You will most likely come into contact with someone who may have Covid-19 -- and they may not even know it! So, assume that you will have brought it home. Go here for detailed information from the CDC (http://bitly.ws/83e3).
7) If you have children: NO PLAYDATES, NO PLAYGROUNDS, NO FAMILY VISITS. You get to hang with the people you live with. That's it. Organize a daily schedule (lots of options being created online), go through the bookcase, find new sheet music for your musicians, find interesting craft projects. Get Creative!
This process WILL NOT be easy, but it IS essential if we are going to flatten this curve and give the roughly 20% of those who get infected and develop serious illness the best possible chance at access to care and survival.

If you are infected, or SUSPECT you are:
1) STAY HOME. REALLY. As much as possible, quarantine yourself away from family members who may not yet be infected.
2) Contact your primary care physician or healthcare provider to discuss next steps
3) If you are asked to go get tested, do so. Then go home.
4) Follow your healthcare providers' instructions regarding isolation and quarantine was closely as possible. This is essential to help minimize spreading the infection.
5) HYDRATE
6) Feed yourself small, regular, nutritious meals.
7) Manage your symptoms as best you can. This is a virus and there is no cure. But you CAN take care of yourself.
9) If you develop serious symptoms, call your physician immediately. If you develop EMERGENCY symptoms (shortness of breath, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, bluish lips or face) call 911.
8) Wash bedding linens as often as possible, in hot water, and dry on high. This is just good hygiene, but it seems that this virus (as of now) appears not to do so well when exposed to very high heat. If this only help mitigate transmission, then it is a step worth taking if possible.

We're all in this together, so let's do what we can to help each other. Keep Calm & Wash Your Hands! :-)

[07/11/16]   A bill regarding labelling for products containing GMOs just passed the Senate. Rather than require clear text labelling, it allows for alternate methods, such as web site info or QR codes. This means only those with smart phones, and data plans to support them, will be able to get the information they need about the food they are buying while they are actually buying it!

This bill was heavily promoted by Monsanto, which should give you pause. If you care about the quality of the food you eat, and if you feel like you have the right (or medical need) to know, consider calling your representative in Congress and let them know!

Why Splenda is worse for you than sugar

Are you trying to slim down this summer? Eating lots of salads, skipping the refined sugars, switching to no-calorie sweeteners for your iced tea? You may want to reconsider...

Dr. Frank Lipman talks about a few reasons: http://www.wellandgood.com/good-advice/dr-frank-lipman-splenda-bad-for-you-sugar/

wellandgood.com And Splenda's not the only bad guy—our Wellness Council MD, Frank Lipman, says there's no free (sweetened) lunch when it comes to artificial sweeteners.

[07/05/16]   We hope everybody had a pleasant and safe Independence Day! Remember, with the actual temperature in the mid- and upper 90s this week, with heat index temps well over 100, hydration is the name of the game if you're out working or playing. But remember to get enough electrolytes, too! Dilute your favorite Gatorade or Powerade by about half to keep the fluids up and replenish the electrolytes, without spiking your sugar too high. Stay cool!

[11/19/12]   Growing season has begun!!

Every year, Holistic Elements participates in Mustaches for Kids' (M-4-K) annual fundraiser for children's' charities. This year, Wilmington NC chapter is looking to raise over $35,000.

Brendan is growing an amazing upper lip warmer in honor of his cousin Cian Smith who passed away at the age of 12 from a brainstem glioma. Before he passed, however, he was granted a wish by the Make A Wish Foundation.

Make A Wish is one of the four charities supported through the growers' careful 'stache cultivation. Why not make a donation to Brendan's 'stache (The Irish Connection...yes, they all get named) to help kids in need?

[10/20/12]   Thanks to all who came out to the Healthy Lifestyle Fair today. We had a great time talking to everyone and doing demos. Check back on Monday for a special offer from Holistic Elements.
