The purpose of this clinical trial is to assess the safety of an investigational vaccine aimed at protecting adults against Influenza (Flu). Influenza is a potentially serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death.

Every Flu season is different and the Flu can affect people differently, but millions of people get the Flu every year. Complications of Flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, and worsening of chronic medical conditions such as CHF, asthma or diabetes. New vaccines must be tested to show that they will work. By participating you will get protected against Influenza and help us test a new novel FLU Vaccine.

WILMINGTON, NC, (July 30, 2021)— Wilmington emerged as a key testing site for vaccines and other therapies on the national stage in 2020. Science continues to push forward with therapies for new and emerging viruses, and Wilmington will continue to play an important role. Significant advances are occurring in the fight against diseases and viruses—most pressingly respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), for which there is currently no approved vaccine. Trial Management Associates, LLC (TMA), an integrated site network based in Wilmington, is gearing up for an influx of new trials to bring these exciting new therapies to the market.

“The Wilmington community went above and beyond over the last year and is continuing to help advance new therapies through clinical trials,” says Phil Dattilo, President of TMA. “Now we have the opportunity to expand vaccines and therapies into unmet needs such as flu, RSV, mononucleosis, and shingles. RSV will be in the forefront in 2021 and 2022, and TMA will need volunteers over the age of 60.”

What is RSV?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory condition that presents with cold-like symptoms including runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and fever. It arises seasonally, and while it can be well-tolerated in most individuals, it can cause complications including hospitalization, pneumonia, and worsening of lung conditions such as COPD in the elderly and the very young. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 144,000 individuals are hospitalized due to RSV, and more than 14,000 die due to RSV complications each year. The CDC also reports that there have been recent spikes in RSV transmission and infection, including 173 hospitalizations nationwide in the months of April and May 2021, with the most significant increases in cases coming from southeastern states.

Due to the increase of available studies for the Wilmington community, TMA is seeking volunteers ages 60 and older for the RSV trials as well as volunteers ages 18 and older for additional clinical trial opportunities. All patients will be compensated for their time and travel.
