Here is a very simplified explanation of PEMF...
When areas of a horse's body get compromised by athletic performance, aging, overuse, illness or injury... their cells actually lose their charge. The cells become rigid, flat and less permeable, keeping toxins and waste stuck inside.
Injured cells actually clump together, which create visible ridges or knots. 😣

PEMF Therapy (Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field) Therapy introduces a gentle pulsing magnetic field which passes through the body. As it does this, it switches on and off. When the magnetic field switches on, it actually stretches any injured or compromised cells, when it switches off, the cells relax. 😌

This is what it's all about and why I love my job!!

Bittersweet day with this lovely lady! While I'm thrilled that she is finally healed enough to go back home and get back to her normal life, I'm really going to miss seeing her sweet face every week! A little back story on Lace and her miraculous recovery:

Late in January, I got a message from another PEMF practitioner in Kentucky asking if I would be able to work on a horse at New Bolton. It's not exactly right around the corner from me, but after she told me a bit more about the horse I knew I wanted to help. Poor Lace had taken a fall in November of last year, and tore three muscles in her hindquarters, the semimembranosis, semitendinosis, and gracilis muscles- two were complete tears and one partial.

She had been taken to New Bolton Center soon after her fall for emergency care, and since 3 days after the injury she had been unable to get up without the help of a sling and hoist. She only had tried to lay down about 5 times since the injury (from November to January!) but otherwise was up and walking. Unfortunately a repeat ultrasound done 7 weeks post injury - showed some healing of one of the muscles but no progress in healing of the other two. While Lace was in good condition before her accident, she was 23 years old at the time, which isn't particularly helpful when dealing with a traumatic injury of this type. Things weren't looking so good😢Luckily, she has a wonderful owner who had heard about PEMF and was willing to do anything possible to help her beloved mare!

I started PEMF sessions with Lace on February 6th, three times a week for the first four weeks, then twice weekly for three weeks, and once a week until today. After the very first session, she laid down and managed to get back up with only some help at her halter and tail- and NO SLING!🎉 She proceeded to do it again twice that week, and then only needed a bit of help at her head, and progressed within a few more sessions to being able to get up completely unassisted! Her owner was ecstatic, and quite frankly so was I! I mean, I have seen the amazing healing power of PEMF many times, but to experience such a drastic change in just a couple weeks was just incredible!

About a month ago she was ultrasounded again, and scar tissue was filling in and healing was finally happening, which meant it was time to start talking about the next step! She started going out in a small paddock for the last two weeks, enjoying the sun and some grass and getting ready to finally be discharged! Next week, after more than 5 long months at New Bolton, she will get to go home and see her friends, possibly even enjoying a trail ride now and again! It was a long road, but to come from no hope to a new life, sure was worth it!!! Love love love my job❤️😁🐎
