Are you a parent of a student with an IEP that attends NHCS? New Hanover County Schools has an Advisory Council for Exceptional Students, and its first meeting for this school year is Thursday 9/9 from 4-5pm.
Committee’s goals:
• To study the school offerings in-depth to determine how well schools are serving children with special needs
• To make recommendations for improvement to local board of education
• To serve as an avenue of public sentiment for improvement

VIRTUAL STEM OPPORTUNITY FOR NC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES!

Catalyst: Creating Opportunities in STEM for Students with Disabilities, is located at the Science House, North Carolina State University. They serve high school students with disabilities who are interested in STEM Careers.

This year due to Covid 19 their Summer Session will be virtual with hands on activities taught by Professors and Scientists and Engineers in Industry and Government Organizations. In addition to STEM content and skills they teach workforce readiness skills such as: resume writing and workplace communication skills.

The cost is only $50 but is valued over $2000. (Families can request a waiver of the $50 fee if needed.) Parents and students are welcome to contact Joann Blumenfeld, Catalyst Program Director, with any questions:

ECAC is conducting a community needs assessment focused on North Carolina parents and caregivers of children with special needs. The survey will help us identify the current and specific needs of families as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Your responses will inform our program planning during this crisis and will foster collaborating opportunities with state and private agencies to better meet your needs.

Our goal is to obtain high-quality feedback from a diverse and wide variety of perspectives across the state.

Starting next week, FPG Fellow and UNC Psychiatry Assistant Professor Karen Bluth is offering online courses on mindful self-compassion for teens!

A class for teens ages 11-14 will be taught on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4–6 pm from April 6–April 29.
A class for teens ages 15-19 will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4–6 pm from April 7–April 30.
