Since December 17, 1965, we have been the local affiliate of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Our Local represents approximately 265 active and retired members of the Wilmington Fire Department. We fight for the rights of firefighters in the City of Wilmington and are dedicated to the betterment of our community. Not only does that involve defending labor rights, engaging in concrete legislative action, and providing a voice for the firefighters, but it also includes helping our community. Some of our community events include Aid to the families of fallen firefighters and first responders, Wilmington Classic hockey game benefiting the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, American Cancer Society, Christmas Toy Drive for Nemours AI DuPont Hospital for Children, coat drive, canned food drives, blood drives, and assisting with our local organizations. The City of Wilmington is the State of Delaware's largest city, and the only one with a fully paid professional firefighting brigade. The members of the Wilmington Fire Fighter's Association protect a community of about 71,000 citizens within a 17-square-mile area. Wilmington is comprised of everything from mansions to row homes, schools, and daycare centers, industrial and manufacturing properties, restaurants, hospitals, a prison, various waterways, the Port of Wilmington, a wastewater treatment facility, a landfill, I-95 and I-495, and high-rise offices and residential buildings. Our members work in six (6) fire stations within the City and provide firefighting and emergency medical services, specialized search & rescue services; along with a Fire Marshal's Office for Arson/Fire investigation, and fire education & prevention programs. They respond to over 20,000+ calls for service each year. Local 1590 Mission Statement

Early morning 2nd alarm response at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Members working on the "D" Platoon handled the initial fire attack, with members on the "A" Platoon later making relief on the fireground as operations continued. Strong work by Wilmington Firefighters, with county mutual aid assisting both on scene and with city coverage — a reminder of how critical staffing and seamless platoon transitions are on extended incidents.

During response to a residential structure fire in the 400 block of West 29th Street this afternoon, two members of D Platoon sustained burn injuries while performing interior search and fire attack operations.

Both members were promptly transported to Christiana Hospital for treatment and are reported in stable condition.

The incident was placed under control in approximately 45 minutes, with effective coordination among responding units.

Local 1590 extends appreciation to the New Castle County fire units and mutual aid partners for their prompt assistance in covering city stations and supporting the operation.

Our primary focus remains on the well-being and recovery of our injured members and their families. The union will continue to provide support as needed.

As winter weather impacts City of Wilmington, Delaware, our members continued doing what they do every day, showing up for the people they serve.

Yesterday, A Platoon, and today B Platoon, have worked through snow, ice, and deteriorating conditions to respond to fires, EMS calls, and emergencies throughout the city. From residential structure fires to urgent medical responses, our members remained focused on one priority: making sure help reached residents when it was needed most.

To support operations during the storm, the department staffed two support pickup units equipped with plows, full EMS equipment, and tools to assist ambulances, clear access points, and support crews operating in difficult conditions. This additional support helped ensure access to homes, patients, and incident scenes despite the weather.

We also want to thank our New Castle County fire company partners and New Castle County Paramedics for providing mutual aid during today’s fire. That cooperation is critical during severe weather and reflects the shared commitment of the fire service to public safety.

We encourage everyone to stay safe during the storm. If you have an emergency, don’t hesitate to call 911—our firefighters are ready to respond.

We are proud of our members and the care, professionalism, and dedication they continue to show in protecting the residents of Wilmington.

On Monday, January 5, 2026, members of IAFF Local 1590 had the solemn honor of standing in support of the Delaware State Police and the Snook family at the Celebration of Life for Corporal Matthew T. “Ty” Snook, held at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware in Newark.

Several of our members proudly served as part of the Honor Guard, while many others attended to pay their respects. When one member of the public safety community falls in the line of duty, it is felt far beyond one agency. Firefighters, law enforcement, EMS — we serve different roles, but we share the same commitment: to protect our communities and to put ourselves in harm’s way for others.

Corporal Snook embodied that commitment. His courage, professionalism, and sacrifice represent the very best of public service. His loss is felt deeply, and his legacy will forever be carried by those who continue the mission he lived.

Wilmington Firefighters Association extends our deepest condolences to the Snook family, the Delaware State Police, and all who loved and served with Corporal Snook. We stand with you in grief, remembrance, and solidarity.

Rest in peace, Corporal Snook. Your service will never be forgotten.
