City of Wilmington Fire Station No. 5 designed by Becker Morgan Group was submitted in the "Non-Residential" category of the AIA Wilmington 2021 Design Awards. Thank you for your submission.

The City of Wilmington Fire Department strategically grew over the past 5-years. A connecting corridor, Shipyard Boulevard has grown with the City of Wilmington, from the historic shipping port and the longest-running drive-in movie theater to a decade of sustained growth and redevelopment. The new City of Wilmington Fire Station No. 5 pays homage to the location's past while paving the future by creating a high standard for quality design and efficiency. The traditional brick façade connects the site's historical past to the present. A lookout tower anchors the 10,774 SF facility and serves as a beacon of public safety for the growing community. An on-site community training room further reinforces the department's commitment to the growing region.

While the department's mission is to protect the community, the station's mission is to protect the firefighters and remain operational in all conditions. The design team took significant measures to create a building focused on promoting the health and wellness of its occupants while being resilient and durable. The ten firefighters who call the firehouse home (at any time) enjoy a communal kitchen, living area, and outdoor patio. Gathering areas encourage camaraderie amongst the crew, which is crucial to facilitate group processing of traumatic events. Natural light and connection to the outdoors through overhead skylights and large windows naturally destress and reduce anxiety amongst crew members. Equipment bays and storage is separate from the living space and referred to as clean and dirty spaces in the firehouse. Isolated ventilation systems ensure harmful carcinogens do not enter the living space.

Located in North Carolina's hurricane belt, the survivability of the facility is paramount to the safety of area residents as well as the first responders. The building is designed as a level IV Essential Facility, seismic category D, capable of withstanding a sustained 131mph wind load. The three 80ft apparatus bays house five department vehicles and the regional HAZMAT team. Fast-acting bi-folding doors and direct hallway access to the equipment bays minimize crew response time and support the City of Wilmington Fire Department ISO Class Two rating.

The 1.72-acre site includes on-site stormwater management, secure staff parking, heavy apparatus aprons, and traffic improvements.

On the cusp of 30 years of activity by AIA's Committee on the Environment (COTE) and many years after the 2006 adoption of the 2030 Challenge, AIA as a National Organization adopted its boldest and most holistic statement in support of Climate Action with its 2019 resolution termed the "Big Move Toward Environmental Stewardship". The resolution outlined three key areas: declare an urgent climate imperative for carbon reduction, transform the day-to-day built practice of architects to achieve a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient and healthy built environment; and leverage support of peers, clients, policy makers, and the public at large.

The adoption of this resolution by Chapters or Sections of AIA was not part of the resolution, nor was it intended to be a mandate. However, as a means to show solidarity by AIA members in support of Bold Climate Action, AIA Wilmington is considering the adoption of the resolution with the commitment to prioritize climate action in whatever form this may take, as determined in the present and in the future by its members.

Our goal is to refocus our efforts and take a leadership role in resilient and sustainable measures to address the climate imperative

Atlantic Packaging - Corporate Offices designed by Bowman Murray Hemingway Architects was submitted in the "Non-residential" category of the AIA Wilmington 2021 Design Awards. Thank you for your submission.
This Atlantic Packaging project is a 15,000 square foot addition to their corporate headquarters. 8,850 square feet of the existing pre-engineered metal building was demolished to make room for the new building. The owner wanted the addition to make the facility more recognizable as its corporate headquarters.
The design concept was developed to compliment what Atlantic Packaging does as a company. Atlantic Packaging designs and fabricates packaging for an endless variety of products. These packages protect and showcase what is contained inside of them. The design is meant to act similarly. The layout and exterior finish system skin were designed to showcase and protect Atlantic Packaging's most important resources - its people.

Cedar Island Residence was submitted in the "Large Residential" category of the AIA Wilmington 2021 Design Awards. Thank you for your submission.

Cedar Island Residence is modernist house designed by LS3P and sited to take advantage of stunning views across a tidal marsh and down the Intracoastal Waterway. When the owners found a rare piece of property at the end of an island with unobstructed views on three sides, they worked closely with the architect on several design studies for the site. After it was determined that the existing 1980s era house did not enhance the land, the team decided to start over with a long, linear structure built for expansive views.
The south-facing pool and associated decks along the water create an oasis and a transition zone between marsh and land. The brightly-colored turquoise spiral stair at the pool deck creates a splash of color that has become a landmark for passing boats. Inside, coral stone creates a dividing point between public and private areas of the house. As a featured material for selected walls and floors, the stone extend from the entry stairs through the house, leading directly to the pool.
