CMB Counseling, PLLC Endometriosis & Reproductive Health Support

CMB Counseling, PLLC Endometriosis & Reproductive Health Support Casey spent her early social work career doing clinical work with adolescents in a school setting.

Casey Berna, a social worker in the endometriosis, fertility, pelvic pain & repro health communities, helps patients navigate the stress, grief and trauma that can come with living with these health challenges through counseling and support groups. Casey is originally from New York where she graduated from Fordham University in 2001, majoring in Social Work and Religious Studies, with a concentration in Peace and Justice Studies. She then graduated with her Master’s of Social Work the following year, completing an accelerated program at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Work with a concentration in Clinical Social Work. Eventually, she came to serve the communities she is active in now, working with individuals and offering support groups to those going through endometriosis, infertility, and pregnancy loss in the New York City area. Casey moved from New York to beautiful Wilmington around 7 years ago. For the past seven years she has coached and supported endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility patients by providing them with resources and guidance as they navigate getting the care they need to meet their life goals. In counseling, Casey utilizes a strengths-based approach to support clients and integrates different therapeutic modalities such as compassion-focused therapy and mindfulness. Many individuals living with endometriosis, infertility and other chronic health issues can feel like they are constantly living in a state of physical crisis. These issues often have a profound impact on not only their physical health, but almost every aspect of their social and emotional wellbeing, inhibiting their relationships and life goals and causing anxiety and depression. Counseling is a way to be supported through the stress, grief and trauma that comes with these conditions. Casey has also worked with expert medical professionals, advocates, and global nonprofits in the endometriosis and infertility fields to improve access to care. She has collaborated with Endowhat, the Endometriosis Summit, the Sister-Girl Foundation, the Endometriosis Foundation of America, and EndoMarch, speaking about the mental health impact of endometriosis and infertility at their public events. She has had the pleasure of working with other nonprofits in the community, such as Endoqueer, Extrapelvic Not Rare, and had the honor of receiving EndoBlack’s Outstanding Ally award at their inaugural gala in 2022. Her documentary, “Endotruths: Impact of Endometriosis and Infertility on Mental Health,” was featured in the Unmentionables Film Festival in Harlem, New York. Casey is very much looking forward to serving patients here in Wilmington and throughout North Carolina state, through both in-person and virtual individual counseling and monthly support and education groups.

So excited to be attending this conference today! The more I work with endometriosis and hEDS patients the more I realize that these conditions often overlap. They Leo share the same long road to diagnosis and instances to finding and accessing expert multidisciplinary care.

I am super excited to announce that my book Endometriosis From Harm to Hope: A Chronic Illness Guide from Sheldon Press is available for preorder! My dream has been to write a book on from a perspective and talk about the impact and has on and how the social justice issues, health inequities and failings of the systems around us gravely impact our physical and mental health and cause us harm. This book offers support on how to navigate it all. From Harm to Hope has been a labor of love and also blooms from the advocacy that started years before I even knew what endometriosis was and is inspired by those doing incredible work every day in our communities. My hope is loved ones and medical professionals will read this and cause less harm and offer more support. My hope is that after reading this patients will feel seen and less alone. To preorder this book and give it legs to grow head to the link below! Thanks to everyone who has supported me to make this happen and who continue to support mental health and multidisciplinary care for those with endometriosis and chronic illness.

Structural racism and providers has devastating impacts on endometriosis and infertility care. Grateful to all of the advocates who spoke candidly about their experiences and the challenges that inspired them to become leaders in the community.

“While there are many myths that delay diagnosis and treatment, it seems wise to start with the most obvious one that is delaying care. Reproductive Endocrinologist, Dr. Melvin Thorton, explains that, “in textbooks physicians are taught that endometriosis is very rare in African Americans. Your average physician has that knowledge and they say, “Oh, it can’t be endometriosis because it is very rare in African American women and they miss the diagnosis and patients suffer going years and years without a diagnosis.”

As current institutional guidelines define hysterectomy as definitive treatment, promote suppressing estrogen, either through medical management or o***y removal, over referrals to multidisciplinary expert care providers, and continues delayed diagnosis and treatment, leaving inflammation for years, endometriosis patients are left powerless as they fight for their fertility and their quality of life.
