New Workshop!
Becoming an Ally for LGBTQ+ Youth with Special Guest Kyle Teller, PHD, of The Trevor Project
JUNE 16th @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
via Zoom

Many LGBTQ+ youth report feeling ignored or discounted when their foster and adoptive parents or other caretakers are unable to talk about gender and sexual identity issues. LGBTQ+ youth who are struggling with self-identification often aren’t able to explain their sexual orientation, because they themselves are in the process of learning who they are. Because LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in the foster care system, many of our kids may be at a higher risk for mental health disorders and thoughts of self-harm or su***de if they have no one they feel they can talk to. As caregivers, it’s our responsibility to educate ourselves about sexual/gender orientation and how to support the youth we care for. The Ally Training is designed to create dialogue around being an adult ally for LGBTQ+ young people by informing participants about common terminology, the “coming out” process, and challenges at home, in school, and the community. This training welcomes all to learn how to support LGBTQ+ young people, no matter your starting point..

At Rec & Respite, it’s more than just a day of fun,  it’s a place where friendships grow, connections are built, and kids are reminded that they are never alone. 🩵

While parents and caregivers take a well-deserved break, our kids spend the day laughing, playing, creating memories, and building relationships with peers who understand and support one another. These moments of connection are what make our Rec & Respite program so special. ✨

We asked some of our parents for advice to share with prospective foster and adoptive parents. Chris shares his number one piece of advice for prospective foster parents. Going in with the right mindset and having an understanding of the goals of foster care is so important. Thank you Chris for sharing your perspective!

Inspiring morning at today as we teamed up with and to advocate on behalf of Delaware’s waiting children and the families we serve. It was a nice reminder that we are stronger when we work together.

We are grateful to have had the chance to speak with the legislators whose schedules allowed for them to stop in, and for all the legislative aides that also came in to learn more about the resources all of us offer.

PS. Don’t let those big smiles fool you, they are a formidable group of change makers! ☺️❤️
