Attention new moms: Come join us in October for a playful, light-hearted and feel-good class for Mamas and pre-crawling babies on Sunday afternoons! We will focus on community building through sharing our experiences of new motherhood while also bonding with our babies and getting to know our beautiful new bodies. Balancing both restorative core movements and relaxing breathing techniques/movements, we hope you leave feeling empowered and at ease in this transitional phase of life. During class, Sometimes wearing baby will feel better and sometimes placing baby on a soft blanket will feel like just enough space for mama to lighten her load a little - the choice is yours! We hope to see you there!

Walk for your midwife, walk for your community.
There aren’t enough midwives to meet the needs of homebirth families in NC.
We want insurance coverage for people choosing to birth at home, system integration so folks can safely utilize resources and higher levels of care when needed, and the ability to practice midwifery without the threat of prosecution.
You can donate to support our legislative efforts. Link in stories.

Dear ILM Birth clients and friends,
Licensing CPMs in NC is a matter that is very close to my heart. This will expand access to high quality care for many families. 2023 is a critical year for getting a licensure bill passed in the legislature, and we are working hard to raise the money to fund navigating the political system and process to bring our licensure efforts to fruition.
The 2022 Walk for Midwives is fast approaching! This is an important fundraiser, if you are able to contribute please click the link provided to make a donation toward my fundraising goal. Check out the main Fundraising page to see other ways to participate! I would love to see your beautiful faces at the in person Walk event in Wilmington (see site for info). Let me know if you have any questions!
With gratitude~Nicole
It time to plan for the annual Walk for Midwives!! Join this call to learn more about how you can help. This is a critical fundraising event for our legislative efforts toward CPM licensure and expanding access to midwifery care here is NC.
If you have interest in helping to organize a walk in your region, this is the call for you! We'd love for you to join us on Monday 3/21!
I LOVE affirmations. Centering throughout pregnancy, grounding during labor and birth. If a client has a list of affirmations they have been working with in pregnancy there usually comes a time in labor where I will read out and pour those affirmations into the birthing person as they are working intensely and fill them up with positive affirmation of their ability and the incredible work they are doing.
The birth of your baby can be an incredibly empowering experience. Birth affirmations are designed to help give you the confidence and strength you need during the birthing process.
They also help to remind you of your innate strength and the beautiful miracle of birth !
Midwives in the community setting (birth center or home) are able to support intuitive movement and encourage birthing people to respond to sensations and discomforts in ways that feel right and good.

Posted • How can we tell where baby is within the pelvis without a cervical exam??
Intuitive movement patterns, or how you move during contractions without thinking, may be a clue!
When we have a contraction, we tend to try to intuitively open the level of the pelvis baby is at to help baby move through the pelvis.
If baby is trying to engage or enter the pelvis, we tend to try to open the top of the pelvis more. Movement patterns tend to include: rocking forward and backwards, wide knees, and tucking the butt underneath.
If baby is engaged, or entered in the pelvis, we tend to open the midpelvis more. Movement patterns tend to include: rocking side to side, and uneven movements or favoring one side.
Learn more about labor biomechanics and how to open the pelvis during birth in our childbirth education courses. We offer in person, virtual via zoom, and online, self paced course options!
Raise funds for expanded access to midwifery care in NC and doula support for birthing families by playing soccer and/or feasting on delicious oysters!! I'll be there, will you?!?

Posted • What are some signs your csection scar needs mobilization??
If you are experiencing low back pain, it could be from adhesions in your incision site pulling towards the front. This be may put more strain on the low back = discomfort or pain.
Pain with deep thrusting or bladder frequency could be from your incision adhering to internal pelvic organs!
Shelf like appearance of your scar could be a external sign that your scar is adhered to surrounding structures. Remember, a csection cuts through 7 layers!!
And then having issues with core activation or feeling connected w your core can be another sign!
Join us Tuesday night, November 2nd at 730pm EST for a csection scar mobilization webinar with ! The webinar will break down the why and how of scar mobilization. Recording will be available!

Have you experienced community based (home or birth center) midwifery care? We would love to hear about it! Was it different than hospital based perinatal care you have received? How did the costs compare? Share your story, inquiring minds want to know!
The rainy day was perfect for digging into some Fall cleaning and organizing. I love how this home office space is coming together, and once I am able to spackle and paint the walls it will all become a little more permanent.
What would you like developing a relationship with your care provider to look like?
Pregnant people should not feel like they are on a conveyor belt of care or that they have to fight for respectful care.
Just a few of the things I pack up to support physiological birth. A TENS unit for back labor, a length of cloth to wrap or jiggle, and different sized peanut balls for beneficial resting/positioning and support to encourage fetal rotation.
Tarin and I participated in many Breastfeeding photo shoots with PCBP, it is a long standing tradition in our community. This pic was taken 9 years ago with Dana Jackson Photography , one of the many talented photographers that have participated.

Why have a doula if you are planning on having a c-section?
Great question! As trained support professionals, we can help the people and families we work with be informed of their options regarding their cesarean birth such as a family-centered c-section, clear or lowered drape, delayed cord clamping, and skin-to-skin in the operating room. When we are permitted to be in the operating room, we can talk the client through what is happening as their baby is being born. We can help with initiating bonding with the baby, breastfeeding or infant feeding, and answer questions for the client and their partner if present. In the event that the baby needs additional support, we can stay with the birthing person so they are not alone if their partner goes with the baby to NICU.
Even if you intend to have a cesarean birth in September thru December 2021 and are in need of a doula, we encourage you to apply for our scholarship. Preference for scholarship awards will be given to Black and Brown birthing people and those from marginalized communities, though anyone pregnant is welcome to apply.
