October is breast cancer awareness month!

Monthly self- breast exams and mammograms are the best screening tools for most people to detect early cancerous changes.

Statistics show that less than 70% of women who are recommended to have yearly mammograms are actually up to date on their screening.

Current guidelines recommend screening mammograms every 1-2 years for most women over age 40 and even earlier for certain women.

Breast cancer doesn't just affect women- it's estimated that in 2019 there will be over 2000 men affected by breast cancer. That's why monthly self-breast exams are so important!

Call your healthcare provider today to schedule an appointment to discuss your need for a screening mammogram and self- breast exams!

Flu season is almost upon us!

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing important information regarding the influenza vaccination. First up today:

Lets dispel some common myths about the flu vaccination!

Myth #1: The flu vaccine gives you the flu
- The flu vaccination is an inactivated form of the influenza virus, therefore it cannot give you the actual flu. Some report mild body aches and soreness at injection site after their vaccination. This is a normal side effect and typically resolves within 1-2 days.

Myth #2: I never get sick so I don't need the flu vaccine.
- When you receive the flu vaccination you're not only protecting yourself but those around you. It's especially important for those who are around small children, those with compromised immune systems or the elderly to receive the flu vaccination.

Myth #3: If I get the flu vaccine I cannot get the flu.
- While the likelihood that you'll get the flu is lessened after receiving the flu vaccine, the risk still exists. The influenza vaccination is not effective against the flu for up to 14 days after administration- so it's possible that in this time frame you're exposed to the flu and then may become ill. What the flu vaccine does is helps to reduce the strength and duration of symptoms should you contract the flu after it becomes fully effective

Flu vaccinations should be arriving to the clinic very soon for our primary care patients- we will keep you updated! Otherwise, most local pharmacies have them on hand now!

September is national head lice prevention month!
Head lice is a common nuisance that usually occurs in breakouts at schools and daycare facilities. Head lice are small, winged insects that live in the hair. A common misconception is that those with head lice have dirty hair- head lice actually love clean hair!

Treatment of head lice isn't always an easy task- removing all of the live insects and their eggs (nits) is tedious and daunting. There are several over-the-counter products available to help kill the lice.

Head lice can be prevented through some easy steps:
- avoid sharing anything that touches the hair or hair such as combs or hats
- avoid coming into contact with someones head if you suspect they have head lice
- do not lie on beds, couches, pillows or blankets that have come into contact with someone that has head lice

If your head lice seems to be resistant and won't go away no matter what you try- visit your healthcare provider for further assistance!

School is back in session and we are seeing a rise in upper respiratory infections here in the clinic!

Upper respiratory infections (URIs) are preventable viral illnesses- prevention comes in the form of good hand washing, covering your mouth when sneezing/coughing and not sharing food or drinks with those you think may be sick.

URIs don't usually require antibiotic treatment as they're typically caused by viruses. Symptoms include: cough, sore throat, low-grade fever (usually
