The 1st Saturday evening of December, we all gather for “Ladies Night”. Ladies Night is a night to honor the wife’s, husbands, partners, significant others and friends who support all that we do; the nights and days away on calls, the training hours, the missed birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and all the time spent away from “home” to do what we do….serve the residents/visitors of Wilmington and the Deerfield Valley and our neighbors. It also allows us to highlight our members contributions to the department with length of service awards, FF of the year award and everyone’s favorite, the I Made the Chief Proud Award.

Last night we gathered at The Stack Restaurant for a wonderful meal provided by Johnny and his staff, and music/entertainment by DJ Todd Crawford and the 3rd annual ugly sweater contest. As is customary, we are always joined by our Honorary FF’s and special guests who help our cause.

Here is our awards for this year:
5 years of service - FF Joe Carcich
10 years of service - FF Brian Wuoti
Lt. Matt Somerville
15 years of service - FF Dan Elliott
FF DJ Pike
30 years of service - FF John Lazelle
Firefighter of the Year - Captain Bobby Maynard
I Made the Chief Proud - FF DJ Pike
Ugly Sweater Contest winner - Honorary FF Doug Baker (2 years in a row!)

Last night, Chief Moore had the honor to present FF Brian Johnson with his 55th year of service award. Brian started a long time ago (you guys can do math!🤣), and rose through the ranks as a Firefighter, Officer and then onto Chief both as a volunteer and then our 1st paid Chief in the late 80’s. Brian kept our ever successful junior program moving forward, ushered us into the “future” with equipment to allow us to do what we do, and kept the department as a whole, moving forward. Brian was a Driver/Pump Operator for many years after leaving the Chiefs position to take a different job for the State of Vermont. Last year, Brian officially turned his gear in, from responding to calls but he remains active by doing our monthly SCBA checks, and showing up to all our events to lend a hand and just being a presence around, something that only Brian can do, We are fortunate to have had 55 years of service from an individual, but even more fortunate to have it be Brian!!!

Thank you to all that keep us moving forward, how large or how small the commitment, because this is a team game, and we truly can’t do it without everyone! If you have ever thought of becoming part of this team or wondered what it takes, give the fire station a call at 802–464–8022, or stop and see us on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:30PM for our training sessions or stop on down during the daytime during the week and see us!

The custom around here when a sports championship is won, it’s followed by a noisy, loud parade with lots of firetrucks, ambulances and police cars. Given the time of last night‘s game and the arrival of our champions back into town, the noisy part just couldn’t happen…

Noisy, loud parades are cool, but an 11pm silent parade has just as much meaning, it is kind of cool and its own sense. The amount of people out at 11 PM in the evening (see video) to es**rt these gentlemen back into town was absolutely amazing.

So, congratulations to the Twin Valley Wildcats Boys on an undefeated season, and bringing home the Division #4 championship .

We are happy to report that we have been selected to receive a $170,000 grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), to go toward the purchase of new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus!! This was the 4th year we have submitted the request for this, and fortunately we have been awarded this year!! We will be able to replace our current equipment with new, up to date technology/equipment that will be used to protect us in the IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) environments, most notably where the products of combustion or incomplete combustion are present.

Stay tuned as we go through this process of identifying manufacturers and comparing products to allow us to make the best choice for our members

We were honored to play a part in Coach Buddy Hayford’s celebration last night commemorating his 500th win (Twin Valley 10-1 win against Green Mountain). With a record of 500-163-27, Buddy is the winningest coach in Vermont history! Thanks Buddy for your commitment to the schools and kids of the valley, and we look forward to a possible parade in November!!!

Another addition of a valuable piece of equipment!! We have placed into service a 2024 Seadoo Switch as our new boat. After weighing our options and a lot of research, we decided on this platform for our new boat. This is basically a pontoon boat (tri-hull) that operates like a Jet-Ski. It is 13 feet long, can “seat” 5 and features a 170hp Rotax engine, and has been outfitted to our specifications, including a radio for communications, lights to allow to operate day or night and a GPS/Depth finder to allow to navigate and see what’s below us for safe operation. Asst. Chief Spirka and Captain Maynard traveled to Doug Russell Marine in Worcester on Friday to take delivery, and the first of many training sessions occurred last night.

The best part about this is it did not cost the taxpayers a dime. The Wilmington Firefighters Association had allocated money to purchase the watercraft, coupled with a donation that occurred a few years ago from Transcanada (now Great River Hydro). However, Asst Chief Spirka put in an application to the Gary Sinise Foundation (you guys ever seen Forrest Gump and the character Lt. Dan?? That’s Gary!!) and we were awarded $30,000 towards the purchase of the boat. The Wilmington Firefighters Association contributed money for the rest of the upgrades and the boat will be gifted to the Town of Wilmington Fire Department.

Thank you to those on the department that made this happen and to the Gary Sinise Foundation. But a special thank you to Mike and the crew at Doug Russell Marine for customizing this to our needs and making a very positive buying experience!

We will be doing a lot of training so watch out for us on Harriman, and even Raponda and Somerset too!!

IN WITH THE NEW!!! The new Engine 1, a 2024 Pierce Sabre. 1500 GPM Pump, 1500 Gallons of water, 20 gallons of Class A Foam, 3- 1 3/4” speedlays, 1- 2 1/2” Crosslay with 1 1/8” smoothbore tip, Pre-connected Akron Mercury Quick Attack LE, Hosebed with capacity fir 1500 feet of 5” and 500 ft of 3”, Seating for 6 (SCBA seats for 5) and all the tools and equipment an engine would carry.

The committee spent hundreds of hours to design us a truck that will fulfill our needs for the next 25+ years, a large thank you to them for their commitment and designing this piece of apparatus.

It’s almost 100% in service so watch for it responding on calls and rolling down the road… Or if you want to see it, stop by the firehouse during the day when the chief is in the office (not Thursdays) or we have training on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:30 PM at the station…. come on down!
