Well, here we go….it has begun to snow and it looks like we are in the jackpot area (if you like snow!).

All of our trucks are chained up and ready. There is talk of 2” per hour snow and the plow crews are gonna have their work cut out for them, so hunker down and enjoy wherever you are and please try and stay off the roads to let the plows do what they do!!!

Use wood stoves, pellet stoves and space heater’s safely….lets throw cook stoves in there too!!! 🪵

Make sure your vents are kept clear to minimize carbon monoxide problems (those of you that have septic systems too) and make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

Sit back and enjoy the weather and as always, if you need us call 911!! 🚒

The Town of Wilmington will be opening a warming center, tomorrow morning at 8 AM at the old firehouse, 18 Beaver St. and will probably continue on Sunday. Please see the graphics below for warnings about the impending cold snap starting tonight followed by potential heavy snowfall on Sunday through Monday.

Please make sure you are prepared and once the snow gets here, stay home and enjoy yourselves and let the road crew do what they do, and stay safe!

And as always, if you need us, call 911 ! 🚒

Today around 3 PM we were dispatched to a residence for a carbon monoxide detector sounding. On arrival, the crew entered the building with SCBA and immediately found readings of over 35 ppm on both floors. The crew identified two potential sources; an oil fired furnace, and a wood stove. A thorough investigation ruled out the oil fired furnace and then shortly thereafter the actual woodstove.

Readings of over 35 ppm were still present so it was time to dive a little deeper. Right next to the woodstove was an ash bucket. At first glance, everything looked normal very fine ash on the top that appeared to be no problem, but a quick movement of that ash resulted in finding larger pieces of smoldering wood debris underneath. The ash bucket was removed, ventilation began and readings began to decrease. Zero readings of carbon monoxide were confirmed by two monitors on all floors and the basement.

So, #1, make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors because they truly do save lives!! #2, make sure you remove all remnants of the fire to include the ash buckets out of your house. The remnants of this fire were hours old, so it should be a good learning experience to you all, that they hold their heat and can give off deadly carbon monoxide for a long time.

When you take your ash buckets out of your house, please don’t put them in paper bags/plastic bags, or place the bucket on something combustible such as wood. Here is some other good advice….

Cool Completely: Let ashes cool for a minimum of 96 hours (4 days) inside the firebox before handling.
Use Metal Container: Transfer cooled ashes to a metal bucket with a tight-fitting lid, never a plastic or cardboard container.
Place Safely: Store the lidded metal container outdoors on a non-combustible surface like concrete or bare soil, at least 10 feet away from your house, decks, firewood, or anything flammable.
Add Water: Soak the ashes in the container with water to ensure all embers are out, securing the lid.
Final Disposal: After another week, if completely cool, you can add them to regular trash or spread thinly in a garden as a soil amendment.

Key Safety Rules
Never put hot ashes in regular trash, green bins, or plastic bags.
Never use a vacuum cleaner for ashes.
Keep the container away from wooden decks, porches, or garages.

So, make sure you have carbon monoxide and smoke detectors that are working, and take care of your ashes. If you have any questions, you know how to find us! 🚒

The 1st Saturday evening of December, we all gather for “Ladies Night”. Ladies Night is a night to honor the wife’s, husbands, partners, significant others and friends who support all that we do; the nights and days away on calls, the training hours, the missed birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and all the time spent away from “home” to do what we do….serve the residents/visitors of Wilmington and the Deerfield Valley and our neighbors. It also allows us to highlight our members contributions to the department with length of service awards, FF of the year award and everyone’s favorite, the I Made the Chief Proud Award.

Last night we gathered at The Stack Restaurant for a wonderful meal provided by Johnny and his staff, and music/entertainment by DJ Todd Crawford and the 3rd annual ugly sweater contest. As is customary, we are always joined by our Honorary FF’s and special guests who help our cause.

Here is our awards for this year:
5 years of service - FF Joe Carcich
10 years of service - FF Brian Wuoti
Lt. Matt Somerville
15 years of service - FF Dan Elliott
FF DJ Pike
30 years of service - FF John Lazelle
Firefighter of the Year - Captain Bobby Maynard
I Made the Chief Proud - FF DJ Pike
Ugly Sweater Contest winner - Honorary FF Doug Baker (2 years in a row!)

Last night, Chief Moore had the honor to present FF Brian Johnson with his 55th year of service award. Brian started a long time ago (you guys can do math!🤣), and rose through the ranks as a Firefighter, Officer and then onto Chief both as a volunteer and then our 1st paid Chief in the late 80’s. Brian kept our ever successful junior program moving forward, ushered us into the “future” with equipment to allow us to do what we do, and kept the department as a whole, moving forward. Brian was a Driver/Pump Operator for many years after leaving the Chiefs position to take a different job for the State of Vermont. Last year, Brian officially turned his gear in, from responding to calls but he remains active by doing our monthly SCBA checks, and showing up to all our events to lend a hand and just being a presence around, something that only Brian can do, We are fortunate to have had 55 years of service from an individual, but even more fortunate to have it be Brian!!!

Thank you to all that keep us moving forward, how large or how small the commitment, because this is a team game, and we truly can’t do it without everyone! If you have ever thought of becoming part of this team or wondered what it takes, give the fire station a call at 802–464–8022, or stop and see us on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:30PM for our training sessions or stop on down during the daytime during the week and see us!

The custom around here when a sports championship is won, it’s followed by a noisy, loud parade with lots of firetrucks, ambulances and police cars. Given the time of last night‘s game and the arrival of our champions back into town, the noisy part just couldn’t happen…

Noisy, loud parades are cool, but an 11pm silent parade has just as much meaning, it is kind of cool and its own sense. The amount of people out at 11 PM in the evening (see video) to es**rt these gentlemen back into town was absolutely amazing.

So, congratulations to the Twin Valley Wildcats Boys on an undefeated season, and bringing home the Division #4 championship .

We are happy to report that we have been selected to receive a $170,000 grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), to go toward the purchase of new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus!! This was the 4th year we have submitted the request for this, and fortunately we have been awarded this year!! We will be able to replace our current equipment with new, up to date technology/equipment that will be used to protect us in the IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) environments, most notably where the products of combustion or incomplete combustion are present.

Stay tuned as we go through this process of identifying manufacturers and comparing products to allow us to make the best choice for our members

We were honored to play a part in Coach Buddy Hayford’s celebration last night commemorating his 500th win (Twin Valley 10-1 win against Green Mountain). With a record of 500-163-27, Buddy is the winningest coach in Vermont history! Thanks Buddy for your commitment to the schools and kids of the valley, and we look forward to a possible parade in November!!!
