OUT WITH THE OLD…..Yesteday we said good bye to Engine 1. Purchased and placed in service in 1997, this International/Central States served us for almost 28 years. It was a trail-breaking truck for us, our first piece of apparatus that allowed the entire crew to be seated inside (except for our “rescue’s” or “utility’s” in the past) and upon arriving at the scene, the entire crew (crew of 5) was able to fight fire or take care of whatever emergency we were faced with. Prior to that, only personnel could ride in the cab as “tailing” was no longer allowed. This truck was also our first with Class A and B foam systems (those not in the fire service, thst helps us suppress certain classifications of fire). It served first due as our attack truck for 14 years, fighting alot of fire in Wilmington and around the Valley. Upon the arrival the current Engine 2, it was moved to 2nd due in town, but first due out of town on mutual aid calls still fighting alot of fire and responding on lots of calls, and always the reliable backup to the current first due engine. It last saw fire on March 24th, responding to Marlboro and actually arrived 1st due, initiating the attack and putting out a fully-involved garage fire (with the help of our great mutual aid system of course!). In its later years, it was deemed “The GOAT” by a couple members because of its contributions to our department, an acronym not shared by all….😜.
It is now headed to Scranton Arkansas where it will continue its service. We know it will be a great piece of apparatus for them and serve them well, as it did us for almost 28 years!!!!
