UNCW's School of Nursing provides numerous, exciting opportunities to enter the dynamic profession of nursing or to begin a career in clinical research. The School of Nursing has been in existence since the early 1960s and offers both baccalaureate and master's degrees in nursing and clinical research. In July 2010, the School of Nursing moved into the newly constructed McNeill Hall. From a young age, Arabella Ong ’26 was inspired by the impact healthcare providers had on others, motivating her to pursue nursing at UNCW. “Their ability to care, advocate and uplift others inspired me to do the same,” said Ong. “What drew me to nursing is its blend of science, empathy and lifelong learning.” UNCW, she is earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a minor in psychology and hopes to become a family nurse practitioner, possibly specializing in neurology or pediatrics. Drs. April Braswell and Jacqueline Vaughn have partnered with engineers at Vanderbilt university (Dr. Alexandra Watkins and Vice Dean Nilanjan Sarkar) to investigate IRB-approved research on vibration, force, and thermal responses for use in newborn simulation. This research will utilize important feedback from nurse practitioner and simulation faculty to advance science on simulation haptics. Research will take place on September 29th and 30th using table-top mini simulation stations and survey plus interview feedback.
