đź’” When Online Betrayal Hits Home đź’”
Watching Unknown Number: The High School Catfish really touched me as a therapist and as a parent. My heart went out to the mother who was blindsided by her child’s painful experience online.
I want to remind parents: you are not alone if you’ve ever felt guilt, shame, or asked yourself, “How did I miss this?” Catfishing and online manipulation are powerful forms of deception, and they can happen to anyone.
👉 Here are a few ways parents can support themselves and their child after an online betrayal:
✔️ Give yourself grace – this is not your fault.
✔️ Create space for open conversations with your child—without judgment or blame.
✔️ Focus on healing, not just the hurt. Therapy, support groups, and community can help rebuild trust and safety.
✔️ Take care of yourself, too. A healthy, supported parent is the best support a child can have.
💡 Healing takes time, but families can move forward stronger. Remember: being a good parent doesn’t mean preventing every hardship—it means showing up with love, support, and guidance when hardships happen. 💜
