A regular breast self-exam is a simple but powerful tool that helps you become familiar with your body, making it easier to detect any unusual changes early, when breast cancer is most treatable.

1️⃣ Look in the mirror (arms at your sides, then raised):
Are your breasts their usual size, shape, and color?
Any dimpling, puckering, or changes in the ni**le?
Any redness, swelling, or visible distortion?

2️⃣ Feel while standing or in the shower:
Use the pads of your fingers in a circular motion, covering the entire breast and armpit area.
Move in small circles, feeling for lumps, thickening, or hardened knots.

3️⃣ Feel while lying down:
Lie on your back, place a pillow under your shoulder, and repeat the exam. Use your opposite hand for each breast.

4️⃣ Take note of any changes:
Lumps, ni**le discharge, persistent pain, or skin changes should be reported to your doctor, even if they seem small.

When?
Pick the same day each mont, ideally a few days after your period ends when breasts are least tender.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death of an otherwise healthy baby, usually during sleep. While it's very rare, it's one of the most heartbreaking tragedies any family can face.

At Wilson OB‑GYN, we're committed to not only caring for you during pregnancy, but also empowering you with knowledge and tools for safe infant care.

💡 Safe Sleep Tips to Reduce the Risk of SIDS:
✔️ Always place your baby on their back to sleep
✔️ Use a firm, flat sleep surface (like a crib or bassinet - no pillows, blankets, or toys)
✔️ Share your room, not your bed - room-sharing is safer than bed-sharing
✔️ Avoid overheating - dress baby in light sleepwear
✔️ Keep the sleep space smoke-free
✔️ Offer a pacifier at nap or bedtime, if breastfeeding is established

🤍 While not all causes of SIDS are known, practicing safe sleep habits can significantly reduce the risk.

Q: Is it normal to have cramps even when you're not on your period?
A: Yes, sometimes!

Mild cramping around ovulation (called mittelschmerz) can be totally normal. But:
⚠️ Severe or ongoing pain
⚠️ Bleeding between periods
⚠️ Pain during s*x or urination

These could be signs of something more serious, like endometriosis or fibroids. When in doubt, let’s talk about it.

Early detection can save your life. Breast cancer is most treatable when caught early, and knowing what to look for is key.
🔍 Here’s how you can detect breast cancer early:

✅ Know your normal
Get familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you can spot any changes.

✅ Look for warning signs:
- A new lump or thickening
- Swelling in part of the breast
- Skin dimpling or puckering
- Ni**le discharge (especially if bloody)
- Inverted ni**le or ni**le changes
- Redness, scaliness, or rash
- Pain in one spot that doesn’t go away

✅ Do regular self-exams
While not a substitute for screening, monthly self-exams can help you notice changes early.

✅ Schedule clinical breast exams
Your OB-GYN will examine your breasts during routine check-ups.

✅ Get your mammogram
Starting at age 40 (or earlier with risk factors), yearly mammograms help detect cancer before you can feel it.

🎗️ If something feels off, don’t wait. Trust your instincts and call us. You are your best advocate.

As your baby grows, their safety is always top of mind, especially when it comes to sleep. Here's how to create a safer sleep space:

🛏 Place baby on their back for all naps and nighttime sleep
❌ Avoid pillows, toys, blankets, or bumpers in the crib
✅ Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only
🌡 Keep baby’s room cool and smoke-free

These practices reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and promote healthy sleep. We're always here to answer questions as you navigate this new journey. 👶💤

It's Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Month. Did you know that FASDs are entirely preventable?

Consuming alcohol during pregnancy, even in small amounts—can affect a baby’s brain development, leading to lifelong learning, behavioral, and health challenges.

💡 If you're pregnant or planning to be, the safest option is no alcohol at all.
💬 Not sure what’s safe? We're here to talk, without judgment.
