STDs (or STIs) are dangerous because, if left untreated, they can lead to serious and sometimes lifelong health problems. Here’s why they matter:
1. Many STDs show no symptoms.
People often don’t know they’re infected, which means the infection can quietly cause damage or be passed to others.
2. Untreated STDs can lead to long-term health issues.
This includes infertility, chronic pelvic or testicular pain, pregnancy complications, certain cancers (like cervical cancer from HPV), and damage to organs like the heart, liver, and brain.
3. They increase the risk of HIV.
Having an untreated STI can make someone more vulnerable to acquiring or transmitting HIV.
4. Some infections become harder to treat.
Antibiotic-resistant strains of STIs like gonorrhea are becoming more common, making prevention and early treatment even more important.
5. Emotional and mental health can be affected.
Living with an untreated infection can cause stress, anxiety, and strain on relationships.
The good news: Most STDs are treatable — and many are curable. We offer free testing so you can always stay safe.
