Examples of ADHD Masking
ADHD masking is when people with ADHD hide or suppress their symptoms to fit in, avoid judgment, or appear “normal.” It often comes at a huge emotional and mental cost.
Here are some common examples of how ADHD masking shows up:
Staying too quiet and being overly careful about never piping up
Obsessively checking your handbags (or belongings) to avoid losing things
Reacting as you are expected to instead of how you feel inside
Demanding perfectionistic standards from yourself
Suppressing natural behaviors like leg bouncing or fidgeting
Masking or copying other people’s behavior to avoid exclusion
Many adults with ADHD become experts at masking, which can lead to burnout, anxiety, exhaustion, and even identity confusion. While it helps them survive in neurotypical environments, it prevents them from getting the understanding and support they actually need.
