I know this kind of thing can present as edgy and esoteric. It may illicit a “no f’ing way” reaction to giving an iota of attention to people in the recent past who may have harmed us.
I get that fully.
AND AND AND…
I want to offer a reframe of these two ideas.
➡️ In the not so distant past, and even still currently, relationships with ancestors was a normal and healthy part of daily life all over the world. For SO many of us, the routine of communicating with and honoring our ancestors broke with the advent of organized religion, colonialism, and other structures that oppressed this very normal practice. Ancestral practice may seem “edgy” and esoteric because it’s been pushed into the shadows and relegated to only those who possess psychic powers. Reviving this practice as a part of any spiritual path restores a part of ourselves that may feel lost, set adrift, or abandoned because our connection to a biological root system has been diminished over time. Learning to connect with our people and bring them into our lives on a daily basis is normal, healthy, and necessary.
➡️Why would we want to spend time with dead people who hurt us? Good question. So, imagine the ocean. A vast body of water made up of trillions of droplets of water. The ancestral body that you emerged from is like this ocean. The ocean defines you, not a few drops. The most recent dead, say the last 2-3 generations, may have caused great hurt AND there is an entire ocean beyond them who has not. We cannot define ourselves by a few sh*tty, harmful people because in each of us lies incredible talents, gifts, and love that is also an expression of our people. We are all pretty clear on what our ancestors did wrong, but do we know and embody what they got right ? This is the primary focus of ancestral work; yes acknowledge the crap and its origin, but really lean into and actively become aware of and live out the gifts of our lineages.

It is a constant skill to heed intuitive inklings, slight universal nudges, and nagging feelings to steer the ship in a new direction. Especially when my Slavic DNA screams full steam ahead, stay the course, do not veer away from the commitment at any cost. It is a great survival tactic, but it is hard to reconcile when a slight tweak or adjustment of a spiritual nature is calling to be made. To air on the side of alignment despite the threat of self made stories of failure, flakiness, or unreliability requires practice and diligence.
I am sharing this because last month I excitedly shared my Costa Rica Retreat with you all and a few weeks later quietly cancelled it. Within myself I noticed shame arising and the feeling of letting people down. I say I “noticed” because I did not go further with those feelings; I paid attention to the emotional precipice that I found myself standing at and chose to spin on my heel and walk away from that edge.
Something was not in alignment with the retreat. Not in a bad way. In a noticing way.
So, rather than remain the hard headed Slav that I am, I chose the path of alignment and re-imagined the retreat. I sat with the energy of it and one day, it all re-configured. Dates, pricing, payment plans, intention, rituals…it all magnetized sans nagging feelings and aligned.
Gosh, alignment feels just so right.

After my travels to Bosnia and Herzegovina, I arrived at the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Fresh from an Ancestral Healing Intensive I was tired on all levels, but my soul felt so very full.
The first night in the city I had a flash of a dream of which I only received these words:
"Help us, there are 1000 of us."
The second night I experienced what I call a night terror, or an intrusion. Unable to speak or scream, the figure in my room attempted to tie my hands as I kicked him and woke up.
I am not an avid or regular dreamer, so when I do dream, it feels significant.
It felt really important to NOT assign a story about the two nights of dreams or make assumptions about the Why of them.
I just needed to do the thing: more spiritual hygiene.
I bought local salt and a rose salve and the third night before bed I took a very exfoliating shower (the salt crystals were huge!) and then applied a protective layer of rose to my skin.
That night, my third dream arrived:
I was in a corner store and when the shopkeeper reached for me, I ran. I ran down the street, climbed up the side of a house, and ran from clay rooftop to rooftop Matrix style. It felt so good to be up high, in control of my body, and powerful.
The following night, I was dreamless.
I share this because I was inspired by a mentor who said recently, "we can never be protected 100%."
She was referring to energetic protection and she is right. No matter all the offerings, clearings, and requests for protection we make, sometimes heavy energy just happens.
No blame, no shame, no spiritual bypassing, or deep analysis.
Just.
Keep.
Tending.
To.
Your.
Energetic.
Hygiene.

Rings, photos, watches, ashes, etc. etc. These are just a few of the valuables that may be passed down from generation to generation. The objects from our ancestors can reflect their personality and imprint and may hold outdated or stagnant energetic imprints.
