I’ve decided to embrace my ‘pastoral counselor’ identity more publicly by sharing some of the key steps in my formation:
- Prayerful and intentional career change process changing from high-tech professional to professional counselor/therapist (2000)
- Training as a Spiritual Director (2002)
- Pastoral Counseling degree from SSW (2005)
- Pastoral Counseling Chaplain at Methodist Hospital, San Antonio (2005-2006)

While I don’t identify as a “Christian Counselor” with all the baggage that phrase carries, I do identify as a Christian and understand my work as a counselor as part of my calling and ministry.

I want you to know about the ‘Parent Strong’ parent support group 12-week leadership training.

I hope you will share this information with any parents you know who might benefit from the group support and training.

First training, Monday, April 29, 2016, 6-8PM, Katherine Anne Porter School, Wimberley, TX

The purpose of the 'Parent Strong' training is to develop a support group for parents of adolescents that find themselves feeling frustrated and hopeless about parenting their adolescent children.

The training targets the following objectives:

• Parents have experiences of hope and success
• Parents learn and follow a process of change resulting in positive changes in their family life
• Parents create of community of support and accountability for themselves
• Parents learn new ideas and strategies of parenting
• Parents learn to articulate their goals and values
• Parents learn group process and leadership skills to take ownership of the Parent Strong group

The group is an open group, so parents can join the group at any time.

While I always gently listen and provided a non-anxious presence, I have learned that helping my clients articulate our shared therapy goals moves the process towards healing much more quickly. I think the author of this article makes a lot of sense.

Therapy should focus on goals and outcomes, and people should be able to graduate from it.
