This is Tommy Watkins. Tommy was born in Wi******er Ky to a large and loving, non addicted family. The picture on the left is Tommy in active addiction with just one of his many charges. The two pictures on the right is Tommy now that he is happily in recovery.
Tommy first started using at the age of 13. His first experiences were with ma*****na, alcohol and co***ne, and he used very socially for a long time. Then he was hurt at work in his early 20's and was introduced to opioids. This quickly turned into an addiction that would eventually cost Tommy his children. Tommy saidly then turned to he**in and m**h at a loss of meaning for life due to his loss of his children. This would quickly spiral to leading Tommy to becoming homeless living under bridges, unemployed, untrustableand in and out of jail.
The first time Tommy got sober he was Casey-lawed. This forced him to recovery for eight months when he relapsed and overdosed, causing him to have to be took to the e.r. When Tommy had woke up in the hospital, ART (Achieving Recovery Together) was there to discuss with him about treatment options, which he accepted happily once more. He stated that once he got out of treatment ART had walked with him hand in hand through more of his recovery process which gave him the heart that he has now to just give back.
I asked Tommy what life was like now that he is sober, and his reply was very heartfelt. He said, "Now that I am sober I get to be the father, brother and son that my family deserves." Then he continued with, "now I have the chance to work for the center that helped save my life. With a chance to give back to my community. I hold AA meetings in the jail while also helping the inmates find treatment options like this program has done for me."
Tommy's story was remarkable for me. And very inspirational as well. I hope it helps y'all too.
