Many years ago I heard a message by Evangelist David Barker. It was on the importance of reading your Bible. This is the poem which goes along with the message.

“I Put My Bible Down”

There was a man of God who sat in a prison cell.
He had preached the word of God; everyone had known him well.
Now he sits with his head bowed, he hardly makes a sound,
Because one day he decided to put his Bible down.

His cell mates they all wondered why to prison he did go.
If he had done his best for Jesus, why is his head so low?
They asked, “Why are you here, Christian?” as they gathered round.
The man then told this story, “I put my Bible down.”

“I thought that it was harmless to skip a day or two
Of reading my devotions, I had other things to do.
Then my new nature grew weak, and the devil came to town.
I could not win the battle because I’d put my Bible down.”

“I did not know how to fight him, I did not know what to say,
For I had not read God’s Word or took the time to pray.
Oh, I went on serving Jesus; how godly I did look.
But I did not have the power that comes from God’s dear book.”

“So now I sit in prison; an inmate just like you.
My reputation is all ruined, my preaching days are through.
That is why I hang my head and my face wears a frown,
because I regret that day I put my Bible down.”

O Christian hear the message from this man’s prison cell!
There are children who need a leader, and there are sinners going to hell.
There are blessings to obtain; we must win the victor’s crown!
May you never have to say the words,
“I put my Bible down.”

Bridge 2 Recovery.
Core Truths

1. My recovery depends on my relationship with God.
Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Psalm 91:1-16 KJV
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. [2] I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. [3] Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. [4] He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. [5] Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; [6] Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. [7] A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. [8] Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. [9] Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; [10] There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. [11] For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. [12] They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. [13] Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. [14] Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. [15] He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. [16] With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Trust And Obey

[Jesus said,] “Believe also in Me. . . . Keep my commandments.”
John 14:1, 15

One day a struggling Christian visited his minister. “I’ve read books on discipleship,” said the visitor, “taken theology courses by correspondence, and stayed up late doing assignments for my Bible study group. But I’m confused. Can you tell me how to be a victorious Christian?”
Pulling a hymnal from its shelf, the pastor opened to these words: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
That’s it in a nutshell. Sometimes the Christian life isn’t easy, but it’s always simple. We walk by faith and live in obedience. Godliness is the simplicity of taking God at face value, doing what He says, and watching Him bless our lives.
Sometimes in trusting and obeying, we find ourselves wanting to do God’s part as well as our own. Perhaps you have a problem that seems to have no answer—maybe a wayward child. You can do your part to pray, love, and communicate. But then you must trust God to do His part to convict, convert, and change.
Every problem is an opportunity to trust; every situation is an opportunity to obey. And when it comes down to it, every part of our Christian life falls into those two categories: trust and obey!

For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows, Are for them who will trust and obey.

Remembering And Responding

I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.
Psalm 119:16

Which is easier—to make your bed in the morning or leave it unmade? To volunteer for a community project or to watch TV all weekend? To vacuum, wash, and wax your car or to leave it dirty? The easiest choices reflect the Second Law of Thermodynamics: all work processes tend toward a greater state of disorder over time without fresh injections of new energy.
This law applies both physically and spiritually. Leave your car parked in a field, and it will rust and fall apart. The same will happen in your spiritual life. Forget to maintain the spiritual disciplines you have learned, and in time, your life will take on increasing signs of disorder. That’s what happened to the Israelites when they returned to Jerusalem from captivity. They started out obeying God, but in time they lost their energy. They stopped giving Him the first and best from their lives, and the prophet Malachi called them to account (Malachi 3:7-9). If you can see disorder creeping into your life, make sure you are still giving your first and best to God.
Remembering and responding to God’s will takes new energy every day. That’s just the way it is this side of heaven.

People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.
SAMUEL JOHNSON

Day And Night

Joshua 1:8 KJV
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Imagine a chef who collected cookbooks, took cooking classes, studied recipes, and developed menus—but never cooked. Are you like that when it comes to spiritual food? It’s one thing to enjoy Bible study, attend Bible classes, and follow daily reading plans. But are you daily applying the Bible’s lessons to your attitudes and behavior?
Joshua 1:8 gives three steps to Bible study. First, keep listening to God’s Word. Keep reading it aloud. Don’t let it depart from your mouth or your mind.
Second, meditate on it. Mull it over in your imagination. Think about it when you drive to work and when you sit at home. Ponder it when you lie down and when you rise up.
Third, obey it—be careful to do everything in it. Then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. When we’re consistent in our daily devotions, it’s easier to be consistent in our daily duties.
I on Thy statutes meditate,
Though evil men deride;
Thy faithful Word is my delight,
My counselor and guide

Choosing And Using Time

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15-16

In 2004, the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Americans sixty-five years old and older spent 7.3 hours in leisure and sports activities; thirty-five- to forty-four-year-olds spent the least time, 4.2 hours per day. The “average American” age fifteen or older spent 3.0 hours in leisure and sports activities and another 3.4 hours in miscellaneous activities.
In spite of how rushed and stressed everyone claims to be, it seems Americans have quite a bit of discretionary time on their hands each day. The question is, what do we choose to do with it? Once when King David was not occupied with kingly duties, he was found hanging out with Nathan the prophet—spending time in godly pursuits (2 Samuel 7:1-2). Later in his reign, when he had time on his hands, he ended up being guilty of adultery and murder (2 Samuel 11).
Time, once it passes or is used in ungodly pursuits, can never be regained. Why not keep track of your time this week and see how much of it is spent with the Lord?
Everyone has the same amount of time. The difference is that some choose to use it more wisely than others.

I am a shadow, so art thou; I mark the time, dost thou?
