Welcome, 2024! The start of a new year can be a gift. It’s the perfect time to start something new, set goals for yourself, or make changes for the better. One way that I like to ease into the new year is by setting an intention, or picking a word to represent your hopes for the year. My word for the year is growth. How about you? What is a word that represents your intention or plans for the year?

The holidays are some of the most joyful and exciting times of the year, but the holiday season can also be a huge time of stress for a lot of us. I've put together a handful of tips to mentally prepare for the holidays so that we can enjoy this season together.
1. Manage your expectations. Don't put too much pressure on yourself or your family this holiday season.
2. Set boundaries. Set boundaries around topics of conversation you aren't comfortable having, like politics. Don't be afraid to say no to things if you need to.
3. Focus on spending time with those you are most excited to see.
4. Practice gratitude. Soak up the good moments and acknowledge what you are grateful for.
5. Practice acceptance. We can't control what other people do, but we can control we react to it.
6. Don't overdo it. Like I said, it's okay to say no to things if you need to.
7. Come prepared. Bring some board games or other activities to keep the mood light.
8. Practice self-care. Remember to be patient and kind with yourself, and give yourself the gift of extra self-care this holiday season

Just in time for sweater season, here's a quote from the king of sweaters himself: Fred Rogers. Although his work focused on teaching children of the power of self-love and creativity, we as adults could stand to learn a thing or two about that. Consider giving therapy a try to learn more about how to talk about the battles we face and cope with the things that come our way because, as Mr. Rogers says: “anything that is human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.”

Wrapping up on this wonderfully long Thanksgiving weekend, I was reflecting on all the things that I’m thankful for. My family, my friends, watching my baby’s first steps, TWO jobs that I love, our home already decorated for Christmas, and the list goes on. Thanksgiving is a great time to think about what we’re thankful for, but did you know that making gratitude part of your daily practice has long-term positive effects on your mental health? Practicing gratitude can reduce stress, improve overall coping and wellbeing, encourage healthier relationships, and help you to think more positively about the past, present, and future. Here are 6 simple ways to practice gratitude in your daily life: 1. Keep a gratitude journal 2. Express thanks to people in your life 3. Practice Mindfulness 4. Notice your glimmers 5. Do small acts of kindness 6. Volunteer for a cause that’s important to you. Any other ideas on how to practice gratitude? Let’s hear it!

Just a little reminder: mental health matters. We go to the doctor when we’re sick, we sleep when we need rest to rest, we eat when we’re hungry, but what do we do to support our mental health? One way to support your mental health and take care of yourself is to go to therapy. Talking to a mental health professional about what is going on in your life can help you learn coping skills, ease stress, gain insights, and more.

As my favorite month of the year comes to a close, my family took a lovely fall hike this morning for our weekend self-care. Being in nature is one of our favorite ways to relax and recharge mentally, especially when the leaves are colorful and the air is crisp. In the words of L.M. Montgomery, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

Starting therapy can be intimidating. It seems like everyone wants to shy away from having to take a good long look at the parts of themselves they'd rather not see. I get it, trust me. However, being brave enough to explore the darker parts of ourselves can open us up to fully embrace our own light. Only then can we truly heal from our pasts, feel grounded in our present, and look forward to our futures with hope and excitement.

Today is World Mental Health Day, which is an opportunity to acknowledge that mental health is health and a universal human right. It’s imperative to recognize the importance of good mental health and to work together to end the stigma of seeking mental health care!

Hi there! Just a reminder that self-care is one of the most important things we can do - for ourselves and also the people that we support. Here is my self-care tip of the day: go outside and take a few deep breaths of fresh air. Giving yourself even 5 minutes outside can be a good mental reset, plus there are physical benefits as well. Studies show that being out in nature helps reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels, relax muscle tension, boost energy levels, improves sleep quality, improve your mood, and more. Bonus points if you practice mindfulness and gratitude while you're out there.

I was having a cup of coffee this morning and joked about needing my morning “fuel” to get going, but it got me thinking about what truly “fuels” me. What fuels you? It’s important to find what motivates you to get out of bed in the morning, or keep going when things get tough, or to make necessary changes when the time is right. So, I guess here is my challenge for you this morning: find what fuels you.
[image: on a white background, black handwritten font says find what fuels you. in the bottom right corner, there is a cartoon green coffee mug.]
